Illustrated with steel-engraved plates and hand-colored fashion plates. Bound in contemporary half sheep over marbled boards with spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Good only with loss at crown red rot at extremities. Scuffing to boards light soiling to top edge of textblock ownership markings and notations to endsheets; moderate and at times foxing throughout with the occasional marking in pencil to contents; 1-2pp detached from binding but present. Front hinge tender. <p>The uncommon first appearance of what many scholars have called the first modern detective story. The character of Dupin became a prototype for future detectives including Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot.
