EDGAR ALLAN POE né Edgar Poe; January 19 1809 - October 7 1849 was an American writer poet author editor and literary critic who is best known for his poetry and short stories particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre. He is widely regarded as a central figure of Romanticism and Gothic fiction in the United States and of American literature. Poe was one of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story and is considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre as well as a significant contributor to the emerging genre of science fiction. He is the first well-known American writer to earn a living through writing alone resulting in a financially difficult life and career. Edgar Poe was born in Boston Massachusetts on January 19 1809 the second child of American actor David Poe Jr. and English-born actress Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe. He had an elder brother Henry and a younger sister Rosalie. Their grandfather David Poe had emigrated from County Cavan Ireland around 1750. His father abandoned the family in 1810 and his mother died a year later from pulmonary tuberculosis. Poe was then taken into the home of John Allan a successful merchant in Richmond Virginia who dealt in a variety of goods including cloth wheat tombstones tobacco and slaves. The Allans served as a foster family and gave him the name "Edgar Allan Poe" although they never formally adopted him. The Allan family had Poe baptized into the Episcopal Church in 1812. John Allan alternately spoiled and aggressively disciplined his foster son. The family sailed to the United Kingdom in 1815 and Poe attended the grammar school for a short period in Irvine Ayrshire Scotland where Allan was born before rejoining the family in London in 1816. There he studied at a boarding school in Chelsea until summer 1817. He was subsequently entered at the Reverend John Bransby's Manor House School at Stoke Newington then a suburb 4 miles 6 km north of London. Poe moved with the Allans back to Richmond in 1820. In addition to this information this copy contains more information in hand-written form - to the front endpaper about the fanfare press and their use of 'the Typefounder's cutting of the perpetua type.'. It has information about where the punches were cut in France and by whom Charles Malin and how Stanley Morison became involved with them.'. No other inscriptions. The third separate printing of The Raven following a Glasgow edition in 1869 listed as BAL 16216 but not seen and the illustrated version published by W. Jennings Demorest about July 1870 Demorest's Illustrated Monthly printed an illustrated version of The Raven in its May 1870 issue of the magazine; by July of that year Jennings Demorest was advertising the book version at 25 cents in wrappers and 50 cents in cloth. BAL 16213 also records an 1862 sheet music version.<br /> <br /> This edition illustrated with four wood engravings by David Scattergood printed in black ink on a brown background appears to have been offered as a premium by an enterprising printer who sold the idea to a number of companies near the end of 1870. This version was issued by Tyndale Mitchell & Co. importers of china and stoneware from Europe. Johns Hopkins records a version from Singer Manufacturing and Brown has one from P. P. Hayes a silversmith in Poughkeepsie NY. A couple of years later the same sheets were sold to newspapers as carrier addresses which are also found with a variety of imprints.<br /> <br /> Unlike the Singer and Hayes versions of this pamphlet Tyndale added a printed note to the inside front cover and dated it Christmas 1870. <br /> <br /> A charming scarce and early version of Poe's most popular poem.<br /> <br /> 7 1 poem set to music pages. 5-3/4 by 8-7/8 inches. Gray wrappers printed in blue and brown; Greek-style urn graphic on the back cover. Christmas greeting reproduced from handwriting on inside front cover; Tyndale Mitchell add on inside back cover. Second American edition third overall Tyndale issue. Spine nearly split; wrappers with small areas of loss old water spots on the front cover but generally good. Scarce and fragile. First edition. vi 91 1 pp. Bound in a mourning binding contemporary black pebble calf double ruled in blind with gilt stamped monogram "J.B.F." Jessie Benton Fremont on upper board; spine lettered in gilt with blind ruled bands. All edges gilt with green nonpareil marbled endpapers. Very Good with moderate rubbing to extremities gnawing to bottom edge of textblock gift inscription from Jessie Fremont to her husband John C. at first blank "To Mr. Fremont / from his wife Jessie - / in memory of August 1847. / August 1848." Numerous literary notations in Fremont's hand throughout the endsheets contents moderately foxed and toned with spots of age staining. Page 5 is torn with loss at bottom edge and abbreviated quote from The Raven written at bottom margin "And my heart from out that shadow shall be lifted - nevermore." Chip with loss to top edge affecting 89-91 pp. Three leaves of mourning paper with various literary quotations one a full transcript of Dinah Maria Mulock Craik's "Philip My King" in Benton Fremont's hand. Lacking half-title. <p>The much sought-after first book appearance of the iconic titular poem as well as others such as "Lenore" "Eulalie" and "To Helen." Called "the most important volume of poetry that had been issued up until that time in America" by Hervey Allen in his Poe biography Israfel vol. 2 p. <p>Specially bound in a black mourning binding with provenance of Fremont 1824-1902. She was a woman of letters and writer whose work primarily focused on the American West. She was heavily active in politics and was an outspoken opponent of slavery. She was the wife of John C. Fremont 1813-1890 a United States Army Officer who commanded the West during the Civil War under President Abraham Lincoln. Jessie gifted this to her husband directly after the birth of their first son Benton Fremont b. July 24 1848 who sadly died a year later. She likely had this bound later in memoriam of her son as most of the notations written in her hand on the endsheets are almost all quotations relating to and about death and tragedy. BAL 16147.
