Color marbled endpapers all edges gilt iv296iv295pp 10 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches decorative gilt embossed leather boards and spine hardbound. Previous owner's small label to front paste-down areas of light wear and rubbing to leather boards scattered foxing and spotting but overall very good clean and tight condition in a most handsome gilt binding. Of particular interest are two contributions by Edgar Allan Poe his poem Dream-Land and his review of the poem Orion by R.H. Horne. There is an engraving of "The Elkhorn Pyramid" by Karl Bodmer. An interesting view into the home and intellectual life of mid 19th century American with fashion illustrations poetry literature plus music for various songs. Dean & Co. 1844 Poe was employed over the years by several magazines in some editorial capacity. As an editor and sometimes merely as a regular contributor. Poe wrote a great deal of material in the form of literary reviews such as Review of Rufus W. Griswold's The Poets and Poetry of America Review of William Gilmore Simms's Beauchampe or the Kentucky Tragedy. Review of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Twice-Told Tales and Review of Charles. Fenno Hoffman's The Vigil of Faith and Other Poems all found on pages 298-300 and attributed to Edgar A. Poe Table of Contents genreand notices miscellaneous essays editorial filler and even plate articles. Poe's stories found in these magazines would be considered first appearances of his works. Contained here within are the following titles by Poe: An Appendix of Autographs; A Few Works About Brainard; Life in Death; The Mask of Red Death and To One Departed. Bound in 3/4 black morocco over patterned cloth raised bands ruled in gilt lettering gilt wear to corners and edges light scattered foxing or staining. This issue of Graham's was Poe's last as editor. All magazines were serialized and first issued in wraps. Owners would have them bound later. To find any of Poe's works in wraps are quite rare. Philadelphia: George R. Graham 1849. Hardcover. Very Good Minus. Hardcover. Many of Poe's works first appeared in magazines newspapers and annuals of the time. He published regularly in Graham's between 1841-1849. The items appearing in this volume were the last to be published by Graham's before Poe's death in October 1849. The January 1850 issue was his final appearance in the magazine signed as "The Late Edgar A. Poe." This volume includes his epigrammatic observations on a number of topics titled "Fifty Suggestions" the first half appearing in the May issue at pages 317-319 and the rest in June at pages 363-364. His book review of Anna S. Lewis's "The Child of the Sea" was published in April on pages 270-271. Bound in three quarter black leather with gilt titling to spine. Marbled brown paper covered boards. Leather is rubbed and scuffed as are the paper boards. Foxing and browning to pages throughout although still quite clear and legible. Tear and small hole to last page of text. Philadelphia: George R. Graham 1843. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. Many first printings of Poe's stories poems and criticism first appeared in the periodicals newspapers and annuals of the time. Volumes 22 and 23 of Graham's Magazine include several first printings of his works. Volume XXII includes the first printing of his poem "The Conqueror Worm" on page 32 as well as the first printing of the criticism "Our Amateur Poets. No. I. - Flaccus pen name of Dr. Thomas Ward" on pages 195-198. Volume XXIII includes "Our Amateur Poets. No. III. - William Ellery Channing" on pages 113-117 and "Our Contributors. No. VIII. - Fitz-Greene Halleck" on pages 160-163. This volume also contains first printings of Poe's reviews of the books Brief Account of the Discoveries and Results of the United States Exploring Expedition on pages 164-165 J. F. Cooper's Wyandotte on pages 261-264 and Robert Tyler's Death; or Medorus' Dream on pages 319-320 unsigned but attributed to Poe by Mabbott and W. D. Hull. The volumes also include contributions from such major literary figures of the time as Longfellow Cooper Bryant Lowell and Dana. Both volumes are bound together in three-quarter red leather with brown marbled paper covered boards. Leather is faded bumped and scraped and paper boards are scuffed and chipped. First and last signatures pulling away but text block is otherwise tight. Intermittent browning and foxing but pages generally clear and legible. Each volume has a number of engravings that were moved from the original locations when the magazines were bound together into one book. Binder's ticket "Leander Brigham" affixed to front pastedown.
