Ornate titles and design on smooth field w/blind-stamped borders features the beautifully embossed branches with what appears to be heart shape with leaves sprouting from lower area and hanging blooming foliage or simlar aboe along branches with titles at center. Beautifully printed frontispiece of narrator sitting in chair w/eyes caught on raven atop Pallas buts. Bright colorfully designed title page in hues of red and green. Additional full title-page with decoration follows. Thick leaves fine; without writing or marks. Bind fine; hinges intact. A rare antiquarian simple beauty wonderfully preserved. Includes The Raven and The Bells. "The Bells" is a heavily onomatopoeic poem which was not published until after Poe's death in 1849. Perhaps best known for the diacopic repetitive use of the word "bells." The poem has four parts to it; each growing darker and darker as the poem moves from "the jingling and the tinkling" to the "moaning and the groaning" of the bells. Edgar Allan Poe's hazy narrative begins on a night in December when "The Raven" haunts the unnamed narrator who sits reading "forgotten lore" to sublimate the loss of his love Lenore. A "rapping at his chamber door" reveals nothing yet excites his soul to "burning". A similar rapping slightly louder is heard at his window. When he investigates a raven enters his chamber. Paying no attention the raven perches atop a bust of Pallas high above the door. Amused by the raven's comically serious disposition the man asks that the bird tell him its name. The raven's only answer is "Nevermore". The narrator is surprised that the raven can talk though at this point it has said nothing further. The narrator remarks to himself that his "friend" will soon fly out of his life just as "other friends have flown before". The raven responds again with "Nevermore". The narrator reasons that the bird learned the word "Nevermore" from some "unhappy master" and that it is the only word it knows. Regardless the narrator pulls his chair directly in front of the raven determined to learn more. He thinks for a moment and his mind wanders to his lost Lenore. He thinks the air grows denser and feels the presence of angels and wonders if God is sending him a sign that he is to forget Lenore. The bird again replies in the negative suggesting that he can never be free of his memories. The narrator becomes angry calling the raven a "thing of evil". Finally he asks whether he will be reunited with Lenore in Heaven. When the raven responds with its typical "Nevermore" he is enraged and calling it a liar commands the bird to return to the "Plutonian shore" - but it does not move. The narrator's final admission is that his soul is trapped beneath the raven's shadow and shall be lifted "Nevermore". 4 5/8" x 7" design. Insured post. First Edition. Hard Cover. Vols I-III with blue-coated endpapers speckled in red and blue with Vol IV in plain yellow endpapers. Spines of first three vols quite faded with fourth much less so. All volumes nudged at spine ends with occasional bumps to corners. Spine a bit rolled on first volume. Front hinge cracked on second volume but binding is secure. Contemporary ownership inscription on flyleaf of second volume. Light to occasionally moderate foxing to pages throughout with a handful of scattered marginal brackets / checks in pencil. Books open easily to a few gatherings here and there but bindings are sound. The first complete edition of Poe's works with publication commencing the year after his mysterious death. The first two volumes appeared first in 1850 with the third and fourth separately in 1856. It appears our original owner was a latecomer to the game snagging the fourth volume when first released along with later printings of the first three to complete the set. The set was edited by Rufus Wilmot Griswold who began his pseudonymously-published obituary in the New York Tribune "Edgar Allan Poe is dead. He died in Baltimore the day before yesterday. This announcement will startle many but few will be grieved by it." Griswold went on to become a regular assassin of Poe's character all the while claiming Poe had appointed him as his literary executor. No evidence ever appeared to prove as much which did not stop Griswold from keeping the profits from the sales of the set along with the manuscript materials sent to him by the author's mother-in-law and only paying in return six sets of the initial two volumes. As Griswold admitted in a 1849 letter to poet Sarah Helen Whitman two months after the obituary's publication "I was not his friend nor was he mine. Redfield unknown
