Cloth-backed boards gilt t.e.g. Some chipping and staining to binding but internally a very clean copy. 8vo. xxiv323pp. Eight coloured plates including the frontispiece and sixteen plates in b&w. This edition which seems to be a reprint of a translation originally published in 1841 was made up from English sheets with a new titlepage. The original French edition of "Le Diable boiteux" was published in 1707 and although an original novel was influenced at least in its outline and title by "El Diablo cojuelo" 1641 a Spanish work by Don Luiz Velez de Guevara. The plot of "Le Diable boiteux" concerns a demon who is released by Don Cl�ophas Zambullo from a bottle where he had been imprisoned by an astrologer. To amuse Zambullo and to thank him for his freedom the demon takes his benefactor on a tour of Madrid lifting the roofs off house to reveal what's going on inside. In this manner Le Sage is able to provide a satirical portrait of the vices of Parisian society of the day. Le Sage is probably better known for his 4-volume novel "Gil Blas de Santillane" 1715-1735 translated into English by Tobias Smollett who knew a thing or two about satire himself. G. H. First printing of the Willoughby edition. The preferred anonymous English translation and the best illustrated edition of LE DIABLE BOITEUX a classic French fantasy first published in Paris in 1707 and first published in English as LE DIABLE BOITEUX; OR THE DEVIL UPON TWO STICKS in 1708. The Willoughby edition the first edition in English with the Johannot illustrations was published in 1840 the same year the French edition with the Johannot illustrations was published in Paris by Ernest Bourdin; subsequent printings of the Willoughby edition were made in 1841 1842 and later apparently into the mid-1860s. The later 1881 Nimmo and Bain edition not illustrated by Johannot followed the 1840 Willoughby text with some minor editorial changes. The work was also translated into English by Joseph Thomas whose text was first published in 1841. Le Sage's novel "imitated in framework and title from DIABLO COJUELO of Guevara 1641" Asmodee the "diable boiteux" is "released by Don Cleophas Zambullo from a bottle in which he has be imprisoned by an astrologer. To divert his benefactor Asmodee lifts the roofs off the houses of Madrid and shows him what is passing within.
