Gold on edges as well but much removed by shelf wear. Front board detached on vol. 1 and white stain on its rear. Corners bumped. Spines somewhat cracked. Dark stain on front cover of Vol. 4. Endpapers have ownership labels Captain Tait R.N. Katharine Elsie Biggs F. R. P. Forrest Edinburgh and other label residue. Some staining and foxing especially endpapers. Slight thumbing throughout text. A few pages show signs of dampness. Neat little volumes in need of some TLC. <br/><br/>Lesage's picaresque novel "Gil Blas" is set in Spain but is almost certainly a satire of his own early 18th-century France. Portraying many different classes and occupations within society both reputable and otherwise the book traces the hero's life journey from miserable poverty to a wealthy retirement in his own castle. This "new " translation was by Tobias Smollett English author of "Roderick Random" a book modelled on "Gil Blas." Printed for T. Longman et al hardcover‎

Translated from the French by Jeremy Leggatt. An adventure novel is about a writer ho has lost his inspiration. In despair he decides to become a character in his own novel and he persuades two friends to accompany him on an adventure in a remote Caribbean island with the intent to write the story of their experiences as a novel. They set of ostensably to explore an ancient slave trail and their friendship dissolves in conflict as theey uncover the barbaric cruelty of a man called Colonel Paradise. The author is a winner of the Bourse Goncourt de la Nouvelle and the Grand Prix du Roman de la Ville de Paris. "L'Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane" is a picaresque novel by Alain-Ren� Lesage published between 1715 and 1735. It is often considered to be the last masterpiece of the picaresque genre. The picaresque novel is a popular subgenre of prose fiction which might sometimes be satirical and depicts in realistic and often humorous detail the adventures of a roguish hero of low social class who lives by his wits in a corrupt society. This style of novel originated in 16th-century Spain and flourished throughout Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. It continues to influence modern literature. Alain-Ren� Lesage 1668-1747 was a French novelist and playwright best known for his comic novel "The Devil upon Two Sticks" 1707 his comedy "Turcaret" 1709 and this picaresque novel Gil Blas. Lesage influenced many contemporary and later writers including Charles Dickens Jonathan Swift Mark Twain Wilkie Collins and Edgar Allan Poe. Tobias George Smollett 1721-1771 was a Scottish poet and author.
