In questo "seguito filosofico" della sua biografia dedicata a Spinoza (Einaudi 2002), Steven Nadler, dopo aver valutato diverse possibili spiegazioni, rintraccia la causa del celebre interdetto nella negazione spinoziana dell'immortalità dell'anima. Ma dato che nella cultura ebraica non esisteva un dogma specifico al riguardo, il mistero non fa che infittirsi. Resta il fatto che, per una serie di ragioni religiose, storiche e politiche, ad Amsterdam nel 1650 era assai pericoloso sostenere una cosa simile.

A 4 abbia potuto porre al riparo Barbara, nonché ogni altra formulazione del primo modo della prima figura in cui il medio sia espresso in forme differenti, da qualsiasi difficoltà a cui un tal genere di disformità potrebbe dar luogo, ed abbia potuto classificare il primo modo della prima figura in tutte le sue formulazioni come una forma sillogistica autoevidente.

«De vita solitaria»: Petrarca e Spinoza
brossura Questo studio considera il tema della solitudine in Petrarca e Spinoza. Nei suoi versi Petrarca cantò l'amore umano, con la parola della poesia che incanta; Spinoza, invece è il filosofo dell'amore divino e universale tra gli uomini, attraverso il percorso rigoroso e impersonale delle idee chiare e distinte. Il Dio di Spinoza è il Deus sive Natura, cioè il logos necessario della realtà, mentre il Dio di Petrarca è il Dio padre, trascendente e personale. Spinoza possedeva nella biblioteca che lasciò alla sua morte il piccolo libro di Petrarca "De vita solitaria" e sia Petrarca che Spinoza cercarono nella loro vita la solitudine. Ma negli scritti di Petrarca la solitudine è ricerca ascetica di Dio nella lontananza dagli uomini ed emergono la sua fede cristiana e la dicotomia tra cielo e terra; l'amore umano è contrario all'amore divino, ed egli soffre per un amore terreno. In Spinoza, invece, vediamo il suo distacco dalla religione e la solitudine è soddisfazione di sé nella propria autonomia razionale che però non comporta la lontananza dagli uomini, ma l'amore per il prossimo; il cielo è qui, su questa terra, ma si va oltre l'amore personale, nella prospettiva morale e universale dell'homo homini deus.
