Denn die Geschichte der Begriffe zeigt die Motive jeder Theorie und die Bahnen, welche jeder Begriff seiner Herrschaft unterworfen hat, ebenso aber auch die Collisionen mit den übrigen Wahrheiten und die Auflösung eitler Machtansprüche. Darum ist für die Fortschritte der Philosophie erste Bedingung die Geschichte der Begriffe. Die Geschichte der Philosophie zeigt dies auf jeder Seite; denn die Scholastik wandelte sich um je nach dem Bekanntwerden neuer Aristotelischer Werke; die neuere Philosophie irrlichterirte hin und her je nach dem Zufallen einer classischen Erbschaft; und die Philosophie unseres Jahrhunderts ist besonders lehrreich durch ihre Wandelbarkeit je nach dem Ver-ständniss der Griechen. Ich glaube darum durch diese Studien nicht bloss im Dienste der Geschichte gearbeitet zu haben, sondern wünschte auch dem Fortschritte der Philosophie selbst behülflich gewesen sein; denn unsre heutige Philosophie bedarf noch immer der Arbeit, um die verwickelten Probleme ihrer Forschung durch den Blick auf die einfachen und durchsichtigen Motive ihrer Ursprünge leichter zu beherrschen und um nicht Wege zu verfolgen, die in eine Sackgasse führen, und deren Fruchtlosigkeit die Geschichte zeigen kann. Dass ich nicht den Titel: Studien zur Geschichte der griechischen Philosophie wählte, geschah zum Theil aus Bescheidenheit; denn zu dieser Aufgabe hätte ich die vielseitigen Gesichtspunkte berücksichtigen müssen, die in dem ausgezeichneten Werke des berühmten Geschichtsforschers EduardZeller mit so grosser Besonnenheit durchgeführt sind. Andrerseits aber glaubte ich nicht, dass man die Probleme aus dem Ganzen der Systeme so herausreissen dürfe, wie der äusserst scharfsinnige, aber für den Blick in's Ganze weniger begabte Herbart dies empfahl. Denn welchen Gewinn könnte z. B. eine Trennung der praktischen und theoretischen Philosophie bei Systemen wie die von Plato und Aristoteles bringen, da diese beiden grossen Idealisten das höchste Gut in die theoretische Philosophie {ao(pia) setzen! Obgleich darum in diesen Studien die Abschnitte durch die Namen der Philosophen und nicht der Probleme bezeichnet sind, so wird die Behandlung des Stoffes den Leser doch bald überzeugen, dass die Geschichte der Begriffe das Ziel meiner Arbeit war, wobei mir freilich nur der fortwährende Blick auf das Ganze der Lehre förderlich zu sein schien.
