Small gilt armorial crest to top compartment showing a flag-bearing lion with the Latin motto: Dum Spiro Spero "While I breathe I hope". Top edge waxed red. Fore-edge and bottom edge are fully untrimmed leaving very generous margins. Marbled endpapers. Half-title. xxviii 577 pp 583: pages 581-583 incorrectly numbered 575-577. Extensive footnotes. Though it has been stated that only 50 copies of this volume were issued it remains unclear as to the exact number of copies printed see below. An extremely scarce volume. Corners show some scuffing and edge wear. Boards are rubbed. Faint cup rings on front and back boards. A bit of wear to spine. Bookplate of George Herbert Evans to pastedown. Some light soiling to the margins of half title and the first few pages. A very good copy of this rare work. Taylor here presents the key elements of Aristotle's dogmas in their most genuine form in the very words of Aristotle himself with added commentaries on them by his best Greek disciples. In addition to Taylor's detailed footnotes he has provided a 'catalogue' of the books he consulted while composing the volume an explanation of certain terms used by Aristotle and his Greek commentators and a list of his own translations and original works. Taylor translated the complete works of Aristotle which were published in 9 volumes between 1806 and 1812 in an edition of only 50 copies. Two supplementary volumes were also published: The Metaphysics 1801 and the present volume which was issued as the last volume of Taylor's translation of Aristotle's complete works. This volume was meant to be a distillation of the above set. Taylor states in the preface: "As the first and second books of this Dissertation are scarcely anything else than a Collection from the volumes of my translation of Aristotle's Works it is necessary to observe that my reason for so doing was that I might benefit as much as possible those who were not purchasers of that translation. For as it consists of nine volumes 4to and fifty copies only of it were printed it must unavoidably be confined to a few purchasers. Of the present volume therefore a greater number than fifty were printed in order that those English readers might be in possession of the principal physical and metaphysical dogmas of Aristotle who by the magnitude of the price and the paucity of the copies were prevented from obtaining the translation of the whole of his Works. Quarter-bound in the orginal contemporary binding with a beige cloth spine and paper covered boards. No Titling to the spine or boards. Probably had a paper label - now missing. All covers are a little marked/grubby and there is a 2" narrow split in the top inner edge to the cloth of the spine - but all hinges tight and sound - it's just the cloth that has split. The corners edges and head/tail of the spine are bumped with a little scraping to the corners but generally sound tight and complete. Plain Endpapers with traces of a bookplate having been removed from the front pastedown. No Inscriptions but a brown mark O.25 cm at it's widest by 2.00 cm long affecting the blank edge and fore edge of the last 20pp and the Index - possibly old dried-brown ink Most pages uncut. Rough edged pages with some light foxing spots. Internally a few pages browned some foxing creasing and light thumbing but generally the text is white and very clean. 476 pp 11 pp Index. Overall considering the book is 200 years old this is a Very Clean Tight and Bright copy. "Aristotle's Rhetoric and Poetics are an alternative to Plato. Aristotle's rhetoric tries to strike a middle position. Aristotle says rhetoric and poetry are a technique the Rhetoric is a handbook. Aristotle says the speaker needs to appeal to appropriate information for the particular setting. Much like a lawyer's argument not just relying on facts need to appeal to people's emotions. Aristotle does understand that rhetoric can be used in a harmful way. Aristotle lays out three features in rhetoric: 1. Ethos= character of the speaker also charisma speaker earns the audience's trust use of body language. 2. Pathos= condition of the hearer. 3. Logos= essential bearing on political persuasion truth. Plato's concern by definition therefore excludes speech because it deals with emotion. These three conditions must be in play for a speech to be successful. The rhetoric contains a detailed analysis of the different human emotions and how to elicit them in a speech.
