The humanist's paraphrases of the Evangelists were greeted with immediate popularity and received numerous reprintings. The seven woes to the Scribes and Pharisees in Matthew 23 are a list of critical words by Jesus against the religious leaders as hypocrisy and perjury. First revised edition of Erasmus' response to Martin Luther which is part of their famous theological debate that took place in the 1520s. Erasmus received Luther's work in February 1526. The Hyperaspistes is his first reply to it which he composed within a few days in March 1526. The present edition revised by Erasmus himself and published in July of the same year supplies a more correct text of this famous refutation.The Hyperaspistes first published in March 1526 deals with the question of free will and was written in response to Luthers De servo arbitrio On enslaved willl 1525 which in turn was written in reply to Erasmuss De libero arbitrio On free will 1524. Luther argued that humans could not achieve salvation through good deeds as they could not choose between good and evil and so could only be redeemed through the will of God. Erasmus on the other hand believed that each individual had the freedom to accept Gods grace and turn towards a Christian life and salvation could be reached through good deeds. The confrontation between Erasmus and Luther was a duel of major importance for Europe in the first half of the 16th century as two visions of man history and faith clashed.The second part of the Hyperaspistes appeared in September 1527 continuing the exegetical controversy with Luther. The present edition however was published before the second part was written.With near- contemporary annotations in the margins of some of the leaves. Johann Froben Modern blind-tooled marbled calf bound by Period Bookbinders from Bath England with the author and title lettered in gold at the head of the spine the year at the foot of the spine. With 2 small woodcut illustrations incorporating Frobens device on the title page and the verso of the final leaf a woodcut headpiece above the dedication and two woodcut decorated initials. 275 ll. First edition of Erasmus Paraphrase on the gospel of Luke. Unlike his paraphrases on the gospels of Matthew Mark and John each dedicated to rulers of France or the Holy Roman Empire this work was addressed to King Henry VIII of England. The lengthy dedicatory preface which spans the first twelve leaves takes the form of a personal letter from Erasmus to the king. The Paraphrase on Luke was also unique in its format: it was the only one of the gospel paraphrases to be first published in octavo. The Paraphrases themselves were a novel form of literature at the time: more than mere translations or commentaries they were interpretative retellings of the gospels aiming to clarify the theological and moral meaning of Scripture for a wider audience. Despite Erasmus towering knowledge of the Church Fathers and his editorial work on patristic texts his method in the Paraphrase on Luke was not one of direct quotation from memory. Instead as Jan Bloemendal states Erasmus likely worked with various compilatory sources on his desk texts such as Bedes commentary on Luke the Glossa Ordinaria a medieval annotated Bible and Aquinas Catena Aurea which gathered together centuries of Christian interpretation. Through these sources Erasmus was able to channel the voice of the early Church while crafting something new and distinctly his own.Modern scholarship has also examined the layered narrative voices in the paraphrase on Luke. According to Bloemendal Erasmus plays with the roles of paraphrast narrator and evangelist creating a subtle interplay between himself and the biblical Luke. This device allowed Erasmus to offer veiled critiques on the abuses and moral failings of his own time under the guise of Lukes voice while also inviting his readers into a deeper more personal engagement with Scripture.With some contemporary underlining and annotations primarily consisting of corrections textual additions and markings of notable passages; a later bibliographical annotation in brown ink at the head of the title page "Panzer VI 237" and a small bookbinders label mounted in the bottom inner corner of the recto of the final blank flyleaf Period Bookbinders Bath England Tel 0225 20698. An important document of the humanistic spirit and remarkably beautifully printed with outstanding book decoration during Erasmus' lifetime. In the early years of the 16th century the demand for the original text of the New Testament began to mount and Erasmus 1467-1536 soon saw the necessity to translate the original Greek text into Latin. His first text-critical edition of the New Testament was one of the important foundations for Reformation theology. These present Erasmus commentaries were the first ferment of theological discussion at that time and are of great value. This is the 4th printing of the additional text notes contributed by Erasmus. They show mistakes that ancient theologians had made during their translation and revealed misunderstandings that had arisen due to the lack of knowledge of the text copyists. The first separate printing of this work was done by Froben at Basel in 1519 Bezzel 1212 as an indepent work. Through the years probably altogether a total of eight editions appeared as listed by most of the bibliographers. Octavo bound in full crushed levant morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands triple gilt ruling to the front and rear panels gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles all edges gilt wide woodcut border to the title page signed TB. woodcut printer's device to the final page. In near fine condition. Early ownership name to the title page and light marginalia. Small leather bookplate of Francis Kettaneh affixed to the verso of the front free endpaper. Exceptionally rare with only two other examples traced at auction in the last 100 years. This famous satire was first conceived on the road from Italy to England composed in the house of Erasmus's friend and the dedicatee Thomas More and then first printed under the Latin title Moriae encomium in Paris in 1511. Begun as a paradoxical joke between the two men who had been translating the ancient humorist Lucian together The Praise of Folly is a remarkable work by turns sharp and gentle—but always playful—in its learned treatment of the follies of the world and vision of a humanist life. “The Praise of Folly was written when Erasmus was staying in the house of Thomas More in the winter of 1509–10. Its title is a delicate and complimentary play on the name of his host: its subject matter is a brilliant biting satire on the folly to be found in all walks of life. The book stemmed from the decision which Erasmus had taken when he left Rome to come to England that no form of preferment could be obtained at the sacrifice of his freedom to read think and write what he liked … The work was first secretly printed in Paris and as in other cases its immediate success safeguarded him from the consequences of his audacity … Whenever tyranny or absolute power threatened The Praise of Folly was re-read and reprinted. It is a sign of what was in the air that Milton found it in every hand at Cambridge in 1628. His inherent scepticism has led people to call Erasmus the father of 18th century rationalism but his rationalist attitude is that of perfect common sense to which tyranny and fanaticism were alike abhorrent†PMM. Upon its initial publication in Paris in 1511 Moriae Encomium was hugely popular to Erasmus' astonishment and sometimes his dismay. Even Erasmus' close friends had been initially skeptical and warned him of possible dangers to himself from thus attacking the established religion. Even Pope Leo X and Cardinal Cisneros are said to have found it amusing. Before Erasmus' death it had already passed into numerous editions and had been translated into Czech French and German. An English edition soon followed translated by English poet and diplomat Sir Thomas Chaloner who was renowned among Elizabethans for his Latin verses and pastoral poems three volumes of which were printed during his lifetime by Thomas Berthelet the king’s printer who had published three translations of works by Erasmus in the 1520s. Where Erasmus was subtle or allusive Gueudeville was blatant. The result is that the French version is much longer much more wordy and much more direct than the Latin" Rosenberg. Between 1713 and 1777 there were 21 editions of this translation of which two were reissued three times. With a full-page woodcut illustration incorporating Hillen van Hoochstratens device on the last page and 3 woodcut decorated initials. First Antwerp edition published in the same year as the first Froben edition in Basel of Erasmus De sarcienda ecclesiae concordia. Dedicated to Julius Pflug of Eytra 1499-1564 later the last Catholic Bishop of Naumburg the work sets out Erasmus most urgent appeal for unity at a moment when the fractures of the Reformation were widening by the month. Pflug who valued peace and moderation shared Erasmus unease about the increasingly bitter debates dividing Western Christendom.De sarcienda ecclesiae concordia opens as a commentary on psalm 83 in which Erasmus underscores the spiritual necessity of harmony within the Church. From this biblical foundation he advances his lifelong conviction: that a polarised Christendom is fundamentally at odds with the teaching and example of Christ. In passages marked by clarity moral urgency and classical poise Erasmus argues that contentious theology has little to do with genuine faith and everything to do with human pride.Appended to the treatise is the brief Precatio pro pace ecclesiae addressed to the Cologne jurist Johann Rinck further underlining Erasmus conviction that peace moderation and the diligent search for concord must prevail over doctrinal intransigence.With very minor underlining on three pages and one tiny marginal annotation a small ink stain in the upper margin of the title page a small wormhole running from leaves A6 to B6 and some occasional water staining confined to the margins. Leiden: Govert Basson 1615. Contemporary vellum sewn on 3 vellum tapes laced through the joints with the manuscript title on the spine red edges. 12mo. With a woodcut printer's device on the title page a woodcut roundel with portrait of Erasmus on leaf 5 a divisional title page for Erasmus' letters and a few woodcut decorated initials. Important collection of sources for the biography of Desiderius Erasmus 1469-1536 put together and edited by Petrus Scriverius on the basis of the 1607 edition by Merula of the Compendium vitae including a number of new sources and four hitherto unpublished letters by Erasmus. The humanist and independent scholar Petrus Scriverius 1576-1660 worked in Leiden outside the University but he was in continuous contact with the most famous Leiden professors. Scriverius added commentaries and connecting texts by which the collection gained weight as materials for Erasmus' biography. Also through the later editions edited by Thysius and published by Joannes Maire in 1642 and 1649 the collection became very influential regarding Erasmus' "image" before the first critical biography of Erasmus was published by Joannes Clericus in 1705.With a few near-contemporary manuscript annotations and markings in the margins. The vellum and the title page are slightly dust soiled the pastedowns have detached from the inside of the boards and the front pastedown is lacking the upper outer corner the bottom outer corner of leaf C6 is sligthly damaged not affecting the text some occasional very slight foxing.
