ERASMUS, Desiderius (c 1469-1536) -- IRENAEUS, Saint (Bishop of Lyon) (c 120- c 200)
Opus eruditissimum in quinque libros digestum in quibus mire retegit Gnosticorum aliorumque Haereticorum impias ac portentosas opiniones
Basel: Eusebius Episcopius & heirs of his brother Nicolaus 1571. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo 165 x 104mm. 36 621 63 pages including final leaf with printers device of the word EPISCOP. Episcopus separated by stork surmounting bishops crozier on verso. Edited by Desiderius Erasmus; revised by Johann Jacob Grynaeus. Contemporary calf over wooden boards with blind-stamped arabesque centerpiece on covers brass catches lacking clasps rebacked spine gilt labeled IRENAEI HAERESES 1571; front joint cracked but cords intact; dark stain on opening leaves paper cracks and small holes in title not affecting text some light dampstaining in hinge toward end. 17th-century signature of Robert Baillie to title the famous Covenanter according to pencil note on front endpaper. 19th-century Chiesa Libera stamp on title; and pictorial bookplate of Douglas and Mildred Horton dated 1962 to front pastedown. Reverend Dr. Douglas Horton married Mildred née McAfee in 1945 who was a prominent female captain in the United States Naval Reserve and later the president of Wellesley College.

Irenaeus theological treatise written c. 180 attacked contemporary Christian heresies particularly Gnosticism and the system devised by Valentinus c. 100-c. 160. Irenaeus treatise also supported the idea that bishops maintained apostolic ties to the era of Christ and that a bishop was the best guide to understanding scripture. Given the very bishop-centric message of this work perhaps it is not curious at all that the Episcopius press expressed interest in printing it In Latin Episcopus is bishop. It was not until the 16th century that Irenaeus Opus eruditissimum was widely disseminated first published in Latin by Froben of Basel in 1526 and in the original Greek in 1570. Erasmus famously edited this Latin edition which appeared a year after the first Greek. In it he removed two annotations which referred to baptism and purgatory and also corrected a passage concerning the fault of Adam. The text itself is a new translation of the first book with an extensive dedication to the Basel Mayor Bernhard Brand and the founder of the Basel Reformed Orthodoxy Church Johann Jacob Grynaeus. Irenaeus Opus appears in 10 editions before this one published in both Basel 1528 1534 1548 1554 1560 and Paris 1541 1545 1563 1567 1570. This volume once belonged to Robert Baillie 1602-1662 a Glaswegian and Presbyterian minister and writer known for his Letters which faithfully recorded public events and his participation via correspondence. Baillie was a leader in the 17th century movement that rejected the Church of Englands Book of Common Prayer. From a reformative point of view Baillie would have found interest in Irenaeus work which recognized the canonical character of the gospels. For a work against the Gnostics it is said to contain valuable historical information and a great many New Testament quotations which are a witness to the New Testament text long prior to any extant manuscript; it is the first systematic exposition of Christian theology--Sarton I 294. ERASMUS, Desiderius
Paraphrases in epistolas Pauli apostoli ad Rhomanos Corinthios & Galatas quae commentarii vice esse possunt.
Basel 1520. Small 8vo 10.1 x 15.3 cm. Hieronymus Froben Contemporary blind-tooled pigskin sewn on three supports with corresponding raised bands on the spine author and title lettered on a separated paper label at the head of the spine and with remnants of four pairs of red closing ties. With 5 woodcut frames on the title page and at the start of each text Corinthians in two parts 10 woodcut decorated initials 3 woodcut ornaments and a small woodcut illustration incorporating Frobens device above the colophon on the last page. "465" = 495 1 pp. First edition of Erasmus collected Paraphrases on the Pauline Epistles Romans 1 Corinthians 2 Corinthians and Galatians. Each paraphrase had appeared separately between 1517 and 1519 and this collected edition printed at Basel presented them together for the first time in a single work. Erasmus paraphrase on Romans was the earliest of the four. Completed during the summer of 1517 he initially intended it for publication by Froben in Basel. Concerned however that Frobens press was overburdened Erasmus entrusted the work instead to Dirk Martens in Louvain where he was then residing. Shortly thereafter Froben produced his own Basel edition in January 1518 and the work was an immediate success with further editions appearing in November 1518 and April 1519. The paraphrases on 1 and 2 Corinthians followed in early 1519. Once again Martens handled the first printing releasing it in February that year. However Froben was never far behind and brought out his own Basel edition the following month. The paraphrase on Galatians completed the present Pauline collection later that same year. The Louvain first edition appeared in May 1519 and was quickly followed by Frobens edition in August. Finally in January 1520 Froben gathered these works together into one volume. With a purple round stamp .bibliothek. on the title page and one blue round stamp from the same library on p. 97. With some contemporary underlinings and annotations primarily consisting of corrections textual additions and markings of notable passages. A difficult to read manuscript note on the last leaf a theological note on Paul's co-workers Epaphroditus and Tychicus written partly in Greek for the original terms and partly in Latin as explanatory glosses and on the back pastedown. Front pastedown detached from the boards revealing the printers waste likely a biblical commentary with references to Exodus and Genesis used in the binding. The binding is somewhat stained and rubbed affecting the clarity of some of the stamps on the front board. Some occasional water staining in the margins. Otherwise in good condition.l Adams E 790; Bezzel 1163; BM STC German p. 115; Sider Collected works of Erasmus volume 42 p. ERASMUS, Desiderius
Paraphrases in epistolas Pauli ad Timotheum duas ad Titum unam et ad Philemonem unam . recens ab illo conscriptae et nunc primum typis excusae.
Colophon: Basel 1520. Small 8vo. Johann Froben Later blind-tooled pigskin over bevelled wooden boards each board in a panel design with a lozenge-shaped ornament and cornerpieces in the central panel surrounded by a decorative border 2 metal clasps and catches the manuscript title at the head edge a blank paper label on the spine and 4 pigskin tabs. With a decorative woodcut border on the title page of each work a woodcut printer's device at the end of the first 2 works 9 decorative woodcut borders in the text 16 decorative woodcut initials and 4 woodcut headpieces. 4 works in 1 volume. 141 3; 167 1; 91 1 blank; 14 2 blank pp. Compilation of first or early editions of four of the most important religious works by Desiderius Erasmus all printed during his lifetime. The texts which were incredibly popular in his own time were written to promote a more accurate understanding of the scriptures and make them more accessible to the public. Lifetime editions of these four works are quite rare on the market. In 1516 Erasmus published his revolutionary Latin edition of the Greek New Testament. It was not so much a translation but more a correction as Erasmus intended to free the text of the imperfections that had built up over time. When finished he began working on other parts of the scriptures with the same goal. The first two works in the present volume include his paraphrases of the letters of Paul. They were first issued separately in 4 parts starting in 1517. The present works are part of the first collected edition of the Pauline letters published by Froben in 1520 and 1521. This edition is praised for the fine title borders and initials some of them are known to have been cut by Johann Faber after drawings by the renowned artist Hans Holbein the Younger who often worked for Froben. The beautiful border on fol. 2A1 has been monogrammed by Ursus Graf "VG".The third work of this collection Modus orandi Deum is considered a centrepiece of Erasmus teachings on prayer. In it he explains the importance of prayer and provides a manual for how one should pray. He criticises monastic prayer long church services and practices that place the focus on the number of psalms said rather than their content. Instead he emphasises inner devotion and personal communication with God. The work was first published in October 1524 by Froben and in December 1524 by Knobloch. The present March 1525 edition is the second by Knobloch. The final work of the compilation was first published anonymously in 1520 as Consilium cujusdam . cupientis esse consultum & R. Pontificis dignitati & christianae religionis tranquillitati. Only two Latin editions and two German translations of it have been recorded by Vander Haeghen. With a contemporary ownership annotation at the head of the title page "Martini i iouilliami Vinter" a later annotation at the foot "Bernardhus Chymel alias Thalheuser" and a faded library stamp a few contemporary annotations and nota signs in the margins in 2 different hands. The pigskin has been washed with later clasps a few worm holes on the spine. The work is lightly browned throughout with water stains on some of the leaves mostly in the margins a brown stain on the title-page of ad 3. Otherwise in good condition.l Ad 1: Adams E 791; BM STC German p. 115; Erasmus Online 2919; USTC 682536 11 copies; Vander Haeghen I 144; VD16 E 3329; Ad 2: Adams E 792; BM STC German p. 115; Erasmus Online 2914; Vander Haeghen I 144; this ed. not in the USTC; VD 16; Ad 3: Adams E 697; Erasmus Online 2427; USTC 676364 10 copies; Vander Haeghen I 120; VD16 E 3176; not in BM STC German; Ad 4: Erasmus Online 5731; USTC 623273 3 copies; Vander Haeghen I 59; VD16 E 2542; not in Adams; BM STC German. hardcover

Shortly after Erasmus' revolutionary edition of the Greek New Testament of 1516 he undertook the Paraphrases intending to "retell" the books of the New Testament in one uninterrupted voice without the clutter of textual commentary or critical interruption. They were first issued separately starting with Romans in 1517; and editions appeared in Louvain Thierry Martens Leipzig Valentin Schumann and Basel Johann Froben. Beginning in 1519 Froben began to publish groups of the Paraphrases and in 1521 a collected edition of all of the Pauline letters.
This is a nonce volume containing the latter part of the 1521 Froben edition of the Paraphrases of Erasmus. Titles within ornamental woodcut border initials printer's device in colophon. 465 i.e. 495 1; 167 1; and 141 3 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. First collected editions of these "Paraphrases" of the letters of Paul which were undertaken shortly after Erasmus's revolutionary edition of the Greek New Testament of 1516. As part of that monumental reconstruction of the New Testament Erasmus' intention was to "retell" the books of the New Testament in one uninterrupted voice without the clutter of textual commentary or critical interruption. It was a bold undertaking and in 1517 Erasmus began with the letters of Paul. They were first issued separately starting with Romans in 1517; and editions appeared in Louvain Thierry Martens Leipzig Valentin Schumann and Basel Johann Froben. The collected issues - such as the three which are bound together in this exquisite volume - began to be issued in Basel by Froben in 1519; and finally in 1521 Froben issued a collected edition of all of the Pauline letters. All of the lifetime editions both separate and collected are rare on the market; this copy is in a well preserved contemporary pigskin binding first binding. Woodcut device on title page woodcut initials. Coll.: a4 b–k7 k8 with woodcut device otherwise blank missing; ff. 75. The first edition of Erasmus’ Latin translation of Plutarch’s De curiositate printed together with the original Greek text. Dedicated to the Hungarian nobleman Alexius Thurzo.

De curiositate is a chapter of Plutarch’s Moralia which Erasmus after getting familiar with the original Greek text as a proofreader of the 1509 Aldina edition started to translate into Latin while in Cambridge in 1511. The first compilation of eight chapters in his translation was published in 1514 in Basel by Froben. The present book besides Erasmus’ Latin translation contains the original Greek text of De curiositate too.
The book is dedicated to Alexius Thurzo Elek Thurzó Bethlenfalvi; 1490–1543 a Hungarian nobleman the Treasurer of the Kingdom of Hungary at the time of the publication between 1523 and 1527 and later the Judge Royal 1527–1543. Alexius Thurzo “and two of his brothers Johannes I bishop of Wroclaw and Stanislaus bishop of Olomouc all became correspondents and patrons of Erasmus and of many humanists in eastern Europe. Unlike his brothers Alexis followed a secular career in the mining business and in public office. After the death of King Louis Il of Hungary in the battle of Mohács 1526 he became an important supporter of the Hapsburg dynasty’s claims in the parts of Hungary not conquered by the Turks. Like his brothers the bishops however he was an active patron of humanistic learning. This dedication was offered at the urging of Jan Antonin of Košice Joannes Antoninus Cassoviensis or János Antal Kassai; 1499–1548/1563 a young physician educated at Padua who had treated Erasmus for kidney stones while visiting Basel in 1524 and who after returning to Hungary and Poland promoted contact between his wealthy patrons and Erasmus.†1572 - The Correspondence of Erasmus

Extremely scarce Erasmus first edition.
