A charming descriptive volume on the daily outdoors life of Parisians at the turn of the century with illustrations. First edition. In the publisher's original cloth binding.With a coloured watercolour frontispiece and many monochrome plates and vignettes illustrated by the author and other artists. This book vividly depicts the various outdoor activities and sights one can find Parisians doing at the turn of the century told largely through the author's own anecdotes and observations. With four leaves of publisher's advertisements to the rear. F. Berkeley Smith often explored Parisians and French culture in the early 20th century particularly Bohemian Paris with his other works including 'How Paris Amuses Itself' and 'The Real Latin Quarter'. In the original cloth binding with tipped-in illustration to the front board. Externally very smart with mild rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Slight fading to the spine cloth. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with a small tide mark affecting the top corner of the first few leaves. A generous church cookbook with seven hundred recipes; noteworthy among them: Squash Muffins Celery Root and Hearts of Artichoke Mussel Bordelaise Clam Patties Spanish Meat Pie Coffee Fruit Cake Lemon Cocoanut Cake Cookies with Sherry Monterey Pudding Gooseberry Pudding Pineapple Blanc-Mange Strawberry Mousse. ~ Congregationalists answered the call from President Daniel Coit Gilman 1831-1908 of the University of California to build a hall and organize a fellowship of moral vision within reach of the campus community. The "local church" emphasis of Congregationalist governance had already attracted the largest Protestant presence in San Francisco. After ten years of planning members of Berkeley First Congregational were called to new quarters by a recently cast bell on 30 September 1884 at the corner of Durant Avenue and Dana Street. Thus the early version of The Berkeley Cook Book subtitled A Collection of Choice and Tested Recipes celebrated the dedication of the 1884 church while its younger sibling of 1903 would have appeared in time to honor the building's twentieth anniversary. ~ In another twenty years they would move again to a grander brick complex on Channing Way still only a few city blocks from campus designed by the Bay Area architect Horace Gardner Simpson. It served successive generations for ninety years but in September 2016 was gutted by fire and the building's fate is undetermined as of this writing. ~ Clean and bright. Lightly wear at fore-corners and spine. Stapled in olive wrappers titled in brown. Very good. Dalla mobilità seducente e allusiva delle apparizioni fantasmatiche alle trappole dell’identico, dal tramonto dell’ombra all’alba fredda degli specchi, si delinea il disegno complessivo del difficile rapporto tra l’io e la propria immagine e si intravede una mistica che non si spiega soltanto attraverso le sue fughe dal mondo, ma che – invece di perdersi nell’indistinto – impara, con la Pizia, a contare, come scrive Erodoto «il numero dei grani di sabbia e le onde del mare». Rispetto a una teoretica classica che riflette sulle origini del sacro, e sulle sue forme, già individuate nei luoghi di un sapere che non disattende mai le sue premesse, secondo gli autori è possibile pensare a una storia delle religioni che confini con una filosofia delle immagini. Il libro ricorda che la beatitudine è proporzionale all’affinamento delle capacità percettive. Celebre, a questo proposito, la descrizione demartiniano dello stato dell’olon: «il soggetto, in luogo di udire o di vedere lo stormire delle foglie, diventa un albero le cui foglie sono agitate dal vento, in luogo di udire la parola, diventa la parola che ode». Numerose e intense le rivisitazioni della questione che ispira il titolo. Non ultima quella per la quale nel passaggio dalla religione greco-romana a quella cristiana la scansione fondamentale sembra essere data dalla rottura degli argini costruiti dai greci intorno all’Ade, facendo sì che una folla di oscure presenze si sparga imprevedibilmente sull’intero creato. Una lettura piacevole e scorrevole che con rapide ma puntuali citazioni recupera a un tema complesso e denso nomi (tra altri) come quello di Borges, Nietzsche, Pessoa, Hume, Wilson, Platone. Francesco De Sio Lazzari ha insegnato a lungo Storia delle religioni all’Orientale di Napoli. Studioso del “disprezzo del mondo” nel XII secolo, ha uno spiccato interesse per la simbolica delle passioni che analizza non solo nei testi religiosi ma anche in quelli filosofici e letterari. Giuliana Scalera McClintock insegna Filosofia dei ststemi simbolici a Salerno.
