Birmingham: Lithographed by Binns & Clifford Surveyors &c. 1836. Overall dimensions 1 41.5 x 230 cm and 2 41.5 x 96.5 cm. A very long folding map on a scale of approximately 4½ inches to one mile with a cross section of the landscape on route running underneath on a scale of one inch to a hundred feet for altitude the enlarged plans on the second sheet are of various sizes and are either on a scale of one inch to 10 or 25 chains 1 dissected into 38 sections and 2 into 18 sections both mounted on linen folds into the original black morocco slipcase the brief title gilt lettered on the upper panel along with Locke's name. The foldover flap of the slipcase wanting though the other edges of the case have been neatly restored the maps in excellent condition. Scarce with no other copies traced. Binns' name is repeated at the lower right corner along with that of T. Hodgson billed as Surveyors of Lancaster. Birmingham: Lithographed by Binns & Clifford (Surveyors &c.) unknown

Octavo. 191 pages. illustrated and maps with a Foreword by the Right Honorable Malcolm Macdonald Commissioner-General for the United Kingdom in Southeast Asia His appointment as a government official included hunting and killing tigers who were man-eaters or destroying domestic animals. He became obsessed with their characteristics such as size habits diet their methods of killing their territory their cubs and the superstitions of the people who feared them. Pasted to the rear endpaper is a review of the book in the New York Times April 22 1954. A very nice copy bound in yellow cloth spine lettered and decorated in yellow green and black previous owner's stamped name to front pastedown in a very nice unclipped pictorial dust jacket. showing light wear to spine ends a closed edge tear to rear panel a bit of rubbing to lower joint. Aaron Douglas. 7 photos including frontis 8 full-page illustrations by Aaron Douglas who also did some smalll designs that appear at the beginning of each play 430p. Old rebind in red leather with five faux hubs on backstrip and the addition of rather active marbled endpapers. 22 cm. Extremities rather rubbed including corners the faux hubs amd the edges all edges of backstrip. Former owner's name on first blank leaf. Contents somewhat browned throughout but otherwise sound and clean. This book has always seemed a bit less common than many of the other desirable titles from the Harlem Renaissance but that often seems to be the case for books with plays rather than fiction.Ten of the twenty plays are by African Americans including an early play "Sahdji" by Richard Bruce now remenbered as Richard Bruce Nugent.The other ten are by white authors such as Ridgely Torrence Eugene O'Neill and Paul Green. Bound in publisher's green cloth lettered in gilt. Very Good with darkened spine and edges with light soiling overall. Extremities lightly worn with minor foxing to endsheets. Faint toning to edges of textblock. No jacket likely as issued. <p>An important association between Locke "Dean" of the Harlem Renaissance and popularizer of African American art and Freelon on the first serious book-length study of Black artists. Two of Freelon's Impressionist-style paintings are featured in this work alongside work by Edmonia Lewis Henry Ossawa Tanner Hughie Lee-Smith and Jacob Lawrence. Recent quarterbinding marbled boards attractively backed in leather. 31 cm. Horizontal crease as usual on frontis. Other internal soiling and wear but generally sound. No jacket. When we got this book the binding was beyond repair. We had the binder preserve and mount a small piece less than the size of a business-card of the original endpaper on which Locke had INSCRIBED this copy to Dorothy Maynor the talented singer and founder of the Harlem School of the Arts. The three panels of the Amistad Murals done on canvas by Hale Woodruff and located in Savery Memorial Library at Talladega College in Talladega Alabama are illustrated in color on the center pages of the unnumbered four page section which is found after page 124. These mural panels were unveiled in 1939 just a year before publication of this book. The unnumbered Amistad Murals section may have been a last minute addition to the book. The section is described on the Contents page as facing page 124. We don't know whether it was present in all copies of the 1940 edition. Associates in Negro Folk Education hardcover
