Bonne édition de cet essai fondateur, dans la traduction de référence du philologue et historien de l'art allemand Michael Huber (1727-1804) qui vécut à Paris. L'ouvrage est illustré de 27 planches gravées reproduisant 54 figures, précédées de trois tables et "d'explications des gravures". L'essai est précédé d'une préface de l'auteur et de "Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire de la vie et des ouvrages de Winckelmann" en tête du premier volume (160 pages). "Premier historien de l'art au sens où nous l'entendons" (R. Mortier), fondateur de l'archéologie comme discipline, redécouvreur de l'Antiquité classique débarrassée de "l'hellénisme de pacotille qui plaisait à ses contemporains", Winckelmann est le père de l'esthétique théorique moderne. Sa conception du modèle grec survit jusqu'à nos jours et son oeuvre exerça une influence déterminante sur l'esthétique des Lumières. Essi non analizzano, tuttavia, la felicità in sé, ma i modi per raggiungerla. Questo libro cerca, invece, di presentare il fenomeno della felicità nella sua totalità, vale a dire nei suoi molteplici aspetti filosofici, linguistici, sociali ed etici. Esso vorrebbe essere quel libro che nel Medioevo non è stato mai scritto, ma che sarebbe stato certamente chiamato Summa de beatitudine. Le opinioni dei filosofi e degli studiosi si uniscono, infatti, in questo volume alle speculazioni degli scrittori religiosi e sociali, alle affermazioni dei moralisti, gli aforismi dei saggisti, alle immagini dei poeti, alle percezioni dei romanzieri ed anche alla saggezza popolare distillata nei proverbi, nelle favole e nelle leggende. Uno dei risultati di questa rigorosa indagine è che l’irraggiungibilità della felicità è in gran parte un errore scaturito dai molteplici significati dati alla parola e che la felicità non è più lontana dalla condizione media dell’uomo di quanto lo sia l’infelicità. «Come ha detto Epicuro - ricorda Tatarkiewicz - una delle ragioni per cui la gente non è felice è il fatto che si immagina di non poterlo essere». Questo libro cerca, invece, di presentare il fenomeno della felicità nella sua totalità, vale a dire nei suoi molteplici aspetti filosofici, linguistici, sociali ed etici. Esso vorrebbe essere quel libro che nel Medioevo non è stato mai scritto, ma che sarebbe stato certamente chiamato ’Summa de beatitudine’. Le opinioni dei filosofi e degli studiosi si uniscono, infatti, in questo volume alle speculazioni degli scrittori religiosi e sociali, alle affermazioni dei moralisti, gli aforismi dei saggisti, alle immagini dei poeti, alle percezioni dei romanzieri ed anche alla saggezza popolare distillata nei proverbi, nelle favole e nelle leggende. Uno dei risultati di questa rigorosa indagine è che l’irrangiungibilità della felicità è in gran parte un errore scaturito dai molteplici significati dati alla parola e che la felicità non è più lontana dalla condizione media dell’uomo di quanto lo sia l’infelicità. «Come ha detto Epicuro - ricorda Tatarkiewicz - una delle ragioni per cui la gente non è felice è il fatto che si immagina di non poterlo essere». Wladyslaw Tatarkiewicz, critico e filosofo tra i più significativi della cultura polacca contemporanea, si è formato a Parigi e a Zurigo, insegnando successivamente all’Università di Varsavia.
