Folio 35.5 x 26 cm 17 pp 24 original colour lithographs by Chagall printed by Mourlot 96 black and white photogravures printed by the brothers Draeger and reproducing the etchings made by Chagall for the Illustrations for the Bible 16 pp. Text by Gaston Bachelard translated into English by Stuart Gilbert. Publisher's pictorial boards depicting David Bathsheba and God; moderate edgewear the spine showing some separation remains of the original dust wrapper corners slightly bumped. Chagall's celebrated illustrations for the Bible with 24 additional colour lithographs specially made for this Verve edition. 'Since early youth I have been captivated by the Bible. It seemed and still seems to me the greatest source of poetry of all time. Since then I have sought out its reflection in life and in art. The Bible as it were resonates in nature and it is this secret I try to convey' Marc Chagall. In this beautiful portfolio produced in Paris under the direction of the well-known publisher Tériade Marc Chagall 1887-1985 continued his exploration of the Bible as a source of inspiration for his drawings. The publication capitalises on Chagall's first cycle titled Illustrations for the Bible which had been specially commissioned by Ambroise Vollard the great art dealer and publisher of artist books and was published by Tériade for Verve in two volumes in 1956. In the present work Chagall additionally included scenes of the Old Testament's 'great dramas' drawn in 1958-59 among which one finds the story of the Garden of Eden Cain and Abel the flood the golden calf Jonah and the whale David and Goliath etc. Sorlier 75; Cramer 42. Dust jacket has some shallow chipping and creasing to extremities a little faint foxing to bottom three inches price-clipped 1.3 inch chip at foot of spine one-inch tear along crease at top edge. Except for the spine chip the defects are minor. Jacket is bright and attractive now in fresh mylar sleeve. Book is in excellent condition with a little spotting and darkening to top page ends and a few rubbed spots to extremities of cover. Contents are Fine with no defects aside from a faint small label ghost. Pages are clean and crisp binding is tight; book appears unread. The book is a Folio 14.3 inches x 10.5 inches. . "This double number of Verve contains the drawings made by Chagall in 1958 and 1959 on biblical themes which in general he had not dealt with in his illustrations for the Bible reproduced in Verve 33/34." Includes 96 b/w reproductions and 24 spectacular lithographs in full color with the b/w heliogravure by Draeger Fr�res and the color lithographs by Mourlot Fr�res. The color lithographs each occupy a full page. There are ninety-five numbered pages plus 16 pages of captions. The colors on the jacket front cover and interior lithographs are bright and vibrant; overall this is a handsome highly collectible copy. Complete with all lithographs in fine condition. A separate key to the engravings printing versions in reduced size and detail appears opposite the table. Another highly appealing work by this former student at the Bauhaus under Albers and later associate with Friedlander at the Hermitage Studio. Flocon's specialization in burin engraving coupled with his practical and technical explorations of perspective including the first theoretical exposé of curvilinear perspective and space produced a body of work fascinating in its melding of precision and imagination. Mai 1909 starb in Paris im Oktober 1994 Schriftsteller und Künstler speziell Graphik A. Flocon studierte ab 1928 zunächst am Bauhaus in Dessau unter der Leitung des Architekten Josef Albers. Er wechselte dann zu darstellenden Künsten Tanz Theater der Bauhaus - Bühne bei Oskar Schlemmer Mitwirkung im Bühnenkollektiv bis 1930. Floh vor dem Nationalsozialismus und emigrierte nach Frankreich. Im Jahre 1937 Mitarbeiter von Victor Vasarely. Ließ sich dauerhaft in Paris nieder ab 1945. Mit Johnny Friedlaender gründete er 1949 / 1950 bis ca. 1952 eine Drucktechnik - Werkstatt das Atelier de l'Ermitage.Er war der Freund des Philosophen Gaston Bachelard . Fasziniert von der Beziehung zwischen Kunst und Geometrie trug seine Arbeit und seine Schriften viel bei für das Studium zur Erneuerung der Perspektive und vor allem der gekrümmten Perspektive Kurvenperspektive / kurvenlineare / curviligne Der Schriftsteller Patrice Jeener der sein Schüler war hatte großen Einfluss auf M. Trace of offsetting to wrapper otherwise fine in somewhat worn board slipcase and chemise. First edition. Text by Gaston Bachelard. Illustrated with seventeen beautiful original burin engravings by Flocon including the portrait and the wrapper vignette. One of 200 numbered copies printed on Rives by Fequet and Baudier with the engravings printed by Georges Leblanc. A separate key to the engravings printing versions in reduced size and detail appears opposite the table. Another highly appealing work by this former student at the Bauhaus under Albers and later associate with Friedlander at the Hermitage Studio. Flocon's specialization in burin engraving coupled with his practical and technical explorations of perspective including the first theoretical exposé of curvilinear perspective and space produced a body of work fascinating in its melding of precision and imagination.
