‎Seconde édition parue l'année de l'originale, avec laquelle elle est souvent confondue. Ainsi c'est cette édition que Tchemerzine décrit, fautivement, comme étant la première. Elle est d'ailleurs plus exacte puisque les erreurs de l'originale -connues puisqu'elles avaient d'abord fait l'objet d'un errata- ont ici été corrigées. Paul Thiry, baron d'Holbach (1723-1789) est originaire du Palatinat. Fortuné et parfait gentilhomme parisien, il contribua activement à l'Encyclopédie. Mais c'est sous un nom d'emprunt -celui de Jean-Baptiste Mirabaud, mort dix ans plus tôt et donc peu susceptible d'être inquiété!- et en Hollande qu'il va faire imprimer avec soin sur papier vergé fin les thèses de sa bible matérialiste. Le remous est considérable et le livre aussitôt condamné au feu en août 1770. Selon le mot de Robert Mortier (Diderot et son temps, 162), il s'agit de la synthèse la plus considérable du matérialisme, en même temps que le procès de l'absolutisme. Dix éditions se succédèrent rapidement. L'ouvrage choqua même les philosophes amis, y compris Voltaire qui le dénigrera ainsi : C'est l'athéisme mis à la portée des femmes de chambre et des perruquiers. Pourtant, commentant l'usurpation d'identité commise par Holbach, l'ermite de Ferney eut un mot qui laisse deviner qu'il était en fait très conscient de la réelle qualité de l'ouvrage: Hélas! notre bon Mirabaud n'était pas capable d'écrire une page du livre de notre redoutable adversaire! First edition. Paul-Henri Dietrich Thiery d'Holbach (1723-1789), the formemost exponent of atheistic materialism and the most intransigent polemicist against religion in the Enlightenment. On settling in Paris, Holbach had associated with the younger philosophes who, with Diderot, d'Alembert and Rousseau, were grouping around the Encyclopédie, to which he also became a major contributor. His Salon soon became the main social center, and a sort of intellectual headquarters, for the Encyclopedist movement. Among those attending were Diderot, Grimm, Helvétius, d'Alembert, Rousseau, Boulanger, Condillac, Naigeon, Turgot, and Condorcet. The Baron also counted among his acquaintances many foreigners, notably Hume, Gibbon, Smith, Priestley, Walpole, Garrick, Sterne, Beccaria and Franklin. It is little surprizing that Holbach was also known as le premier maître d'hôtel de la philosophie. Almost everything he wrote -whether because it expounded atheism and materialism, attacked Christianity, or castigated absolute monarchy, the state church, and feudal privilege- was highly subversive under the Ancien régime and could have exposed him to the severest penalties. Consequently, his innumerable manuscripts were usually forwarded through secret channels to Holland for publication, after which the books were smuggled back into France.‎

Du fait de la nature risquée de ses écrits s'intéressant à la politique et la religion, Holbach publia la majorité de ses ouvrages sans nom d'auteur. Dans ce traité, l'un des plus importants de son oeuvre, le baron d'Holbach (1723-1789) aborde les sujets politiques de son époque : liberté, pouvoir, justice, contrat social... en se plaçant en contradiction avec les théories de Rousseau présentées dans son Discours sur les inégalités (1755) Le Contrat social (1762). Holbach part du principe que l'homme est naturellement sociable et qu'il tire profit de cette association. Il imagine un système fondé sur l'utilité sociale des individus; propose l'abolition des privilèges de la noblesse et du despotisme pour une société fondée sur la raison, la liberté et la légitimité de son gouvernement. Ces idées trouveront un écho tout particulier lors de la Révolution française, à laquelle il n'assista pas étant décédé en début d'année 1789. Quoique se présentant comme une traduction de Trenchard, la Contagion sacrée est une oeuvre originale du baron d'Holbach.Ce livre est une critique virulente de la religion et de la superstition. D'Holbach soutient que les religions sont des inventions humaines, créées pour contrôler et manipuler les masses. Il décrit la religion comme une "contagion" qui se propage à travers les sociétés, perpétuant l'ignorance et l'oppression. Le livre est un exemple typique de la littérature clandestine de l'époque, souvent publiée anonymement pour éviter la censure et les persécutions. ‎L'une des deux éditions de ce texte anticlérical extrêmement rare, l'autre étant parue à la date de 1787, à "Rome", sous le titre "Le Pot au noir, et le pot au blanc, ou la vérité dévoilée, la fourberie démasquée et la religion papiste renversée" (même format, même collation). Il s'agit d'une suite de brefs chapitres la plupart fort anticléricaux, d'apostrophes souvent ironiques aux "Welches" rappelant à la fois Voltaire et la "Théologie portative". Volontiers déiste l'ouvrage insiste cependant à la fin sur le caractère empoisonné de la religion et les "Chymistes de la religion". Cioranescu (34067), attribue à Holbach ce texte, inconnu à Barbier, Quérard, Brunet, Graesse et Caillet, mais Jeroom Vercruysse (Bibliographie descriptive des écrits du baron d'Holbach, Paris, Minard, 1971, p. 42) conteste fermement cette attribution : "L'examen de l'exemplaire de la BN et de ses provenances ne permet en rien d'attribuer ce pamphlet anticlérical au baron. Certes des formules font songer au groupe (...). Mais le baron aurait-il publiquement condamné "les petits contes du petit Marmontel" (p. 50) et "les platitudes à la Turgot" (p. 50) ?" L'édition de 1787 est à Conlon (87:891) mais celle de 1788 n'est pas au t. XXIII. Choc en tête, petites déchirures à la couverture, quelques rousseurs sans gravité, bon exemplaire.‎

Depuis cette dernière, c'est la première réédition du texte arrangé par d'Holbach ; elles se multiplieront sous la Monarchie de Juillet, signe d'une atmosphère idéologique différente.Comme les éditions de la fin du XVIIIe siècle, qui portent son nom, ce texte est en fait une compilation due au baron d'Holbach à partir des écrits de Jean Meslier, dont il n'exista pas de publication intégrale avant l'édition de Rudolf Charles de 1864 [Rudolf Charles d’Ablaing van Gissenburg]. Elle est accompagnée de lettres de Voltaire à d'Alembert, Damilaville, Mme de Florian, Helvétius, etc., ainsi que de la vie du curé par Voltaire. Edges of boards with single gilt line. All edges gilt. Corners abit bumped and a bit of overall wear. Inner hinges a bit weak. Internally very fine and clean. All in all a very fine copy indeed. (4), 210176" 167 pp. With all three half-titles, all three title-pages and all three indexes, as well as the introduction.‎

‎The rare first edition, first issue (though Tchermerzine mentions an unknown 2-volume-edition form the same year - this edition has never been verified), of one of d'Holbach's most important works, his influential ""social"" and political continuation of his seminal main work ""Systeme de la nature"" - the bible of materialism. D'Holbach (1723-1789), who was raised by a wealthy uncle, whom he inherited, together with his title of Baron, in 1753, maintained one of the most famous salons in Paris. This salon became the social and intellectual centre for the Encyclopédie, which was edited by Diderot and d'Alembert, whom he became closely connected with. D'Holbach himself also contributed decisively to the Encyclopédie, with at least 400 signed contributions, and probably as many unsigned, between 1752 and 1765. The ""Côterie holbachique"" or ""the café of Europe"", as the salon was known, attracted the most brilliant scientists, philosophers, writers and artists of the time (e.g. Diderot, d'Alembert, Helvetius, Voltaire, Hume, Sterne etc, etc.), and it became one of the most important gathering-places for the exchange of philosophical, scientific and political views under the ""ancient régime"". Apart from developing several foundational theories of seminal scientific and philosophical value, D'Holbach became known as one of the most skilled propagators and popularizers of scientific and philosophical ideas, promoting scientific progress and spreading philosophical ideas in a new and highly effective manner. D'Holbach was himself the most audacious philosophe of this circle. During the 1760's he caused numerous anticlerical tracts (written in large, but not entirely, by himself) to be clandestinely printed abroad and illegally circulated in France. His philosophical masterpiece, the ""Système de la nature, ou des lois du monde physique et du monde moral"", a methodological and intransigent affirmation of materialism and atheism, appeared anonymously in 1770"" (D.S.B. VI:468), as did the social and political follow-up of it, the famous ""Systême social"" in 1773. That is to say, Mirabeau whom he had used as the author on the ""System of Nature"" in 1770 is not mentioned in the ""Social System"", on the title-page of which is merely stated ""By the Author of ""Systême de la Nature"". As the theories of d'Holbach's two systematic works were at least as anticlerical and unaccepted as those of his smaller tracts, and on top of that so well presented and so convincing, it would have been dangerous for him to print any of them under his own name, and even under the name of the city or printer. Thus, ""Systême de la Nature"" appeared pseudonomously under the name of the secretary of the Académie Francaise, J.B. Mirabaud, who had died 10 years earlier, and under a fictive place of printing, namely London instead of Amsterdam. ""He could not publish safely under his own name, but had the ingenious idea of using the names of recently dead French authors. Thus, in 1770, his most famous book, ""The System of Nature"", appeared under the name Jean-Baptiste Mirabaud."" (PMM 215), and so the next ""System"" also appeared in the same manner three years later.In his ""Systême de la Nature"", d'Holbach had presented philosophical materialism in an actual system for the first time and had created a work that dared unite the essence of all the essential material of the English and French Enlightenment and incorporate it into a closed materialistic system"" on the basis of a completely materialistic and atheistic foundation, he provided the modern world with a moral and ethic philosophy, the effects of which were tremendous. It is this materialism and atheism that he continues three years later in his next systematic work ""Systême social"", through which politics, morality, and sociology are also incorporated into his system and take the place of the Christianity that he had so fiercely attacked earlier on. In this great work he extends his ethical views to the state and continues the description of human interest from ""Systême de la Nature"" by developing a notion of the just state (by d'Holbach calle ""ethocracy"") that is to secure general welfare. ""Système social (1773"" ""Social System"") placed morality and politics in a utilitarian framework wherein duty became prudent self-interest."" (Encyclopaedia Brittanica). ""Holbach's foundational view is that the most valuable thing a person seeking self-preservation can do is to unite with another person: ""Man is of all beings the most necessary to man"" (Sysème social, 76"" cf. Spinoza's Ethics IVP35C1, C2, and S). Society, when it is just, unites for the common purpose of preservation and the securing of welfare, and society contracts with government for this purpose."" (SEP).As the ""Systême de la Nature"" had been condemned to burning in the year of its publication, so the ""Systême social"" was on the list of books to be confiscated already in 1773, and it was placed on the Index of the Church in August 1775. As the ""Systême de la Nature"", the ""Systême social"" is thus also of great scarcity. Another edition of the work appeared later the same year, in 12mo. Tchermerzine says that ""Il ya une édition, que nous ne connaissons pas, en 2 vol. in-8. C'est sans doute l'originale."" D'Holbach publie son livre sous le nom de Jean-Baptiste Mirabaud, secrétaire perpétuel de l'Académie française, décédé en 1760. D’Holbach place l’homme raisonnable au centre de tout et base sa philosophie sur la nature. Son but est de détacher la morale de tout principe religieux pour la déduire des seuls principes naturels. Dans sa synthèse, Système de la nature, il développe une position matérialiste, fataliste et surtout ouvertement athée, contre toute conception religieuse ou déiste. La publication de son Système de la nature eut un énorme retentissement : le gouvernement le défère au Parlement qui condamne le livre, le 18 août 1770, à être brûlé au pied du grand escalier du palais. Et l'ouvrage fut mis à l'Index dès sa sortie, par un décret du Saint-Office du neuf novembre 1770. Bien que notre exemplaire ne soit pas en parfaite condition il est assez amusant de constater que cette "bible" du matérialisme a figurée dans la bibliothèque d'un couvent de l'ordre des Carmes déchaux, avec la mention manuscrite: Ex. prohibitis. D’Holbach places the reasonable man at the center of everything and bases his philosophy on nature. Its purpose is to detach morality from any religious principle in order to deduce it from natural principles alone. In his synthesis, Système de la nature, he develops a materialist, fatalistic and above all openly atheist position, against any religious or deist conception. The publication of his Système de la nature had a huge impact: the government deferred it to Parliament which condemns the book, August 18, 1770, to be burned. And the work was put on the Index as soon as it was published, by a decree of the Holy Office of November 9, 1770. Although our copy is not in perfect condition it is quite amusing to note that this "bible" of materialism belonged to the library of a convent of the order of Discalced Carmelites, with the handwritten mention: Ex. prohibitis. The author condemns the Church for its violent persecutions stance against free thinking the Inquisition treatment of Protestants and superstitions. The text was inspired by Thomas Hope’s Considerations upon war upon cruelty in general and religions; Holbach translated the points salient to his arguments into French and did away with the parts not related to religion. He argues that the dogma of Hell turns God into a demon who casts most into an eternal flame. Purporting to be a partial translation of the Latin manuscript Theophrastus Redivivus the first systematic atheistic philosophy the text argues that pagans have performed miracles as often as Jews and Christians. The anonymous author cites paranormal events in Greek and Roman mythology as analogous to the miracles of Christian tradition and claims that the existence of oracles and pagan religion after the birth of Christ prove the existence of extra-Christian miraculous power.<br /> <br /> Although the author remains a mystery the text was likely translated and disseminated by Paul Holbach a Franco-German philosopher and atheist. Joints slightly cracked but strong and with some minor losses spines rubbed contents clean save for some occasional light toning generally a very good unsophisticated set of this major philosophical work. The rare first edition first issue with the correct pagination the comma after 'Londres' in the imprint' and without the 4-page errata which was added later during the printing process as mistakes were discovered of d'Holbach's main work the main work of materialism and one of the most important works of natural philosophy. Paul Heinrich Dietrich Baron d'Holbach was born at Heidelsheim in Germany and educated in Holland at Leiden University before settling in Paris and becoming a naturalized Frenchman. He first became known as a scientist and contributed some four hundred articles to the Encyclopédie of his lifelong friend and colleague Denis Diderot. Diderot d'Alembert Helvetius Voltaire and others of the philosophes met frequently for dinner and philosophical discussions at the Baron's house which became known as 'the café of Europe' among foreign visitors to these dinners were Wilkes Hume and Sterne. Later Holbach turned from science to more dangerous topics: he wrote and had published abroad a stream of books attacking religion in all its aspects which flooded illegally into France. He could not publish safely under his own name but had had the ingenious idea of using the names of recently dead French authors. Thus in 1770 his most famous book 'The System of Nature' appeared under the name of Jean-Baptiste Mirabaud. When it reached France it provoked one of the greatest scandals of the century being immediately condemned on the 18th of August 1770 and put on the Index the 9th of November. "In the Système Holbach rejected the Cartesian mind-body dualism and attempted to explain all phenomena physical and mental in terms of matter in motion. He derived the moral and intellectual faculties from man's sensibility to impressions made by the external world and saw human actions as entirely determined by pleasure and pain. He continued to direct his attack on religion by attempting to show that it derived entirely from habit and custom. But the Système was not a negative or destructive book: Holbach rejected religion because he saw it as a wholly harmful influence and he tried to supply a more desirable alternative. In fact he outlined a whole ethical and political philosophy which he expanded in his later works especially La Morale Universelle 1776. Edges of boards with single gilt line. All edges gilt. Corners abit bumped and a bit of overall wear. Inner hinges a bit weak. Internally very fine and clean. All in all a very fine copy indeed. 4 210; 176; 167 pp. With all three half-titles all three title-pages and all three indexes as well as the introduction. <br/><br/><em>The rare first edition first issue though Tchermerzine mentions an unknown 2-volume-edition form the same year - this edition has never been verified of one of d'Holbach's most important works his influential "social" and political continuation of his seminal main work "Systeme de la nature" - the bible of materialism. D'Holbach 1723-1789 who was raised by a wealthy uncle whom he inherited together with his title of Baron in 1753 maintained one of the most famous salons in Paris. This salon became the social and intellectual centre for the Encyclopédie which was edited by Diderot and d'Alembert whom he became closely connected with. D'Holbach himself also contributed decisively to the Encyclopédie with at least 400 signed contributions and probably as many unsigned between 1752 and 1765. The "Côterie holbachique" or "the café of Europe" as the salon was known attracted the most brilliant scientists philosophers writers and artists of the time e.g. Diderot d'Alembert Helvetius Voltaire Hume Sterne etc etc. and it became one of the most important gathering-places for the exchange of philosophical scientific and political views under the "ancient régime". Apart from developing several foundational theories of seminal scientific and philosophical value D'Holbach became known as one of the most skilled propagators and popularizers of scientific and philosophical ideas promoting scientific progress and spreading philosophical ideas in a new and highly effective manner. D'Holbach was himself the most audacious philosophe of this circle. During the 1760's he caused numerous anticlerical tracts written in large but not entirely by himself to be clandestinely printed abroad and illegally circulated in France. His philosophical masterpiece the "Système de la nature ou des lois du monde physique et du monde moral" a methodological and intransigent affirmation of materialism and atheism appeared anonymously in 1770" D.S.B. VI:468 as did the social and political follow-up of it the famous "Systême social" in 1773. That is to say Mirabeau whom he had used as the author on the "System of Nature" in 1770 is not mentioned in the "Social System" on the title-page of which is merely stated "By the Author of "Systême de la Nature". As the theories of d'Holbach's two systematic works were at least as anticlerical and unaccepted as those of his smaller tracts and on top of that so well presented and so convincing it would have been dangerous for him to print any of them under his own name and even under the name of the city or printer. Thus "Systême de la Nature" appeared pseudonomously under the name of the secretary of the Académie Francaise J.B. Mirabaud who had died 10 years earlier and under a fictive place of printing namely London instead of Amsterdam. "He could not publish safely under his own name but had the ingenious idea of using the names of recently dead French authors. PMM 215 and so the next "System" also appeared in the same manner three years later.In his "Systême de la Nature" d'Holbach had presented philosophical materialism in an actual system for the first time and had created a work that dared unite the essence of all the essential material of the English and French Enlightenment and incorporate it into a closed materialistic system; on the basis of a completely materialistic and atheistic foundation he provided the modern world with a moral and ethic philosophy the effects of which were tremendous. It is this materialism and atheism that he continues three years later in his next systematic work "Systême social" through which politics morality and sociology are also incorporated into his system and take the place of the Christianity that he had so fiercely attacked earlier on. In this great work he extends his ethical views to the state and continues the description of human interest from "Systême de la Nature" by developing a notion of the just state by d'Holbach calle "ethocracy" that is to secure general welfare. "Système social 1773; "Social System" placed morality and politics in a utilitarian framework wherein duty became prudent self-interest." Encyclopaedia Brittanica. "Holbach's foundational view is that the most valuable thing a person seeking self-preservation can do is to unite with another person: "Man is of all beings the most necessary to man" Sysème social 76; cf. SEP.As the "Systême de la Nature" had been condemned to burning in the year of its publication so the "Systême social" was on the list of books to be confiscated already in 1773 and it was placed on the Index of the Church in August 1775. As the "Systême de la Nature" the "Systême social" is thus also of great scarcity. Another edition of the work appeared later the same year in 12mo. Tchermerzine says that "Il ya une édition que nous ne connaissons pas en 2 vol. in-8. C'est sans doute l'originale."
