This book comprises the sheets of the private issue with four preliminary leaves added containing half-title limitation notice Mathews and Lane title-page preface errata list and a note explaining that "The play stands simply as it was roughly printed for our own and the actors' use. " At the back is a single leaf of advertisements for Michael Field titles followed by a Bodley Head catalogue dated 1893. The play was not reprinted in its original form and was heavily revised before printed in 1918. This is also a notable association copy with the bookplate of Richard Le Gallienne. Not only was Le Gallienne well acquainted with the authors but he was also the publisher's reader for the Bodley Head when the book was published. Bound in original green cloth with red title and author to spine and front cover. Offsetting to free front and rear endpapers. Pages unopened. Laid-in is a printed announcement for a production of "A Question of Memory" to take place at the "Opera Comique Strand W.C." under the direction of J.T. Very slight wear to paper at extreme head of spine affecting top 3/16th of an inch and very slight rubbing to paper at tail of spine same amount; drab paper lightly foxed; otherwise a fine copy. The edition was limited to 210 copies on paper and two extra copies not mentioned in the limitation that were printed on vellum. Printed upon Arnold unbleached hand-made paper. Though printed at the Ballantyne Press the actual machine used was set aside specifically for Ricketts to print on. Uniformly bound in publisher's half red morocco over blue cloth covered boards. Spines have raised bands gilt lettering to two compartments and gilt decorations to remaining four compartments: crossed whips with a fox's brush and riding hat; duck; horse's head and a horse shoe. With marbled endpapers top edges gilt. 896 plates 32/vol after Finch Mason R. M. Alexander Cuthbert Bradley and others the majority tinted duotone lithographs. Glossy b/w 'Fores's Illustrated Catalogue' from 6 to 22 pp bound into the rear of each volume followed by ads for other Fores's publications. Slight unevenness to color of spines as usual minor scuffing to some edges & corners. Condition of covers ranges from VG to VG. Four volumes have a few flecks of foxing on the front &/or rear endpapers. Top corner of p.136 vol XVIII missing a 1/2" piece. Otherwise the interiors of texts including plates are in near fine condition. . A very handsome set. Inside the front cover of each volume is the armorial bookplate of WILLIAM DUGALD STUART Esquire J. P. For co. Beds. Lieut.
