Bacon, Francis [Peter Beard]
Recent Paintings 1968-1974.
New York: The Metropolitan Museum of Art 1975. First edition of this collection featured at the Metropolitan Museum in 1975 focuses on themes of loss grief and the intense psychological exploration of the human form following the death of his lover George Dyer. Oblong octavo original black wrappers with the front wrapper die-cut to reveal color self-portrait illustrated throughout. Presentation copy inscribed twice in red felt tip by Bacon's muse friend and collaborator photographer Peter Beard: On the first page of the introduction "For Suzan with warmest thoughts and regards as ever Peter Beard"; and on the first page of the interview section "for a dead-ele book in the works—like 1984 MOMA Peter Beard 4/13/83 57th 63rd 60th." Francis Bacon and Peter Beard first met at a gallery opening in 1957. They became fast friends brought together by their shared personal and artistic motivations. Bacon was particularly inspired by Beard's famous aerial photographs depicting decomposing African elephant carcasses. They were massively influential on his meditations on death and decomposition: "For me the most poignant are the ones of decomposing elephants where over time as they disintegrate the bones form magnificent sculptures which are not just abstract forms but have all the memory traces of life's futility and despair." Bacon painted nine major portraits of Beard during his career and used his likeness for many other works. Upon his death in 1992 his apartment contained more than 200 of Beard's photographs signifying their lasting connection and collaboration. In 1972 the Beard conducted a series of interviews with Bacon in which they discuss how Beard's photographs influenced his painting dubbed the "Dead Elephant Interviews." Excerpts from these interviews appear in this catalogue for the first time. In very good condition with damp-staining to the top of the front panel rubbing and a small tear to cut-out edge. An exceptional association. Francis Bacon was a figurative painter known for his emotionally charged raw imagery and fixation on personal motifs. Best known for his depictions of popes crucifixions and portraits of close friends his abstracted figures are typically isolated in geometrical cages which give them vague 3D depth set against flat nondescript backgrounds. Bacon said that he saw images "in series" and his work which numbers c. 590 extant paintings along with many others he destroyed typically focuses on a single subject for sustained periods often in triptych or diptych formats. His output can be broadly described as sequences or variations on single motifs; including the 1930s Picasso-influenced bio-morphs and Furies the 1940s male heads isolated in rooms or geometric structures the 1950s screaming popes the mid-to-late 1950s animals and lone figures the early 1960s crucifixions the mid to late 1960s portraits of friends the 1970s self-portraits and the cooler more technical 1980s paintings. Bacon took up painting in his twenties having drifted in the late 1920s and early 1930s as an interior decorator bon vivant and gambler. He said that his artistic career was delayed because he spent too long looking for subject matter that could sustain his interest. His breakthrough came with the 1944 triptych Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion which sealed his reputation as a uniquely bleak chronicler of the human condition. From the mid-1960s he mainly produced portraits of friends and drinking companions either as single or triptych panels. Following the suicide of his lover George Dyer in 1971 his art became more sombre inward-looking and preoccupied with the passage of time and death. The climax of this later period is marked by masterpieces including his 1982's "Study for Self-Portrait" and Study for a Self-Portrait—Triptych 1985–86. The Metropolitan Museum of Art unknown

1644. Leiden Hack 1644 12° 416 4 pp. altes restaur. Lederbändchen; feines Expl. Sermones Fideles the Latin translation of Bacon's essays was first published in 1641 and this second edition has been completely reset. The text here consists of 62 essays. William Hazlitt remarked of Bacon "It is not easy to make room for him and his reputation together. This great and celebrated man in some of his works recommends it to pour a bottle of claret into the ground of a morning and to stand over it inhaling the perfumes. So he sometimes enriched the dry and barren soil of speculation with the fine aromatic spirit of his genius." Gibson 52a unknown

BACON, Francis
Sylva sylvarum. bound with New Atlantis
London: John Haviland for William Lee 1635. FIFTH EDITION. Complete with frontispiece portrait of the author and the uncommon second engraved title the tables and the recipe for gout in the first work woodcut vignette on the title page of New Atlantis. Contemporary calf rebacked; an excellent copy. Fifth edition of Bacon’s collection of exceedingly significant scientific experiments and observations on natural history published posthumously by his personal chaplain William Rawley. It was in this work that Bacon strove to separate his views of natural history from those of his contemporaries by building on a notion of the “new science†rather than collecting pleasant pictures and descriptions. The second work is Bacon’s highly acclaimed yet unfinished utopian novel New Atlantis which details the customs people society and history of the fictitious island of Bensalem and the Salomon House their cooperative college of science. The “new science†described in this work along with Bacon’s other writings was so influential that it eventually contributed to the formation of the Royal Society DSB I p. 376 and generally pp. 372-377.

Bacon 1561-1626 was an English statesman natural philosopher and advocate of the inductive method in science. Ahead of his time Bacon conceived a new means of acquiring true knowledge by observation experiment and inductive reasoning. His new experimental method was to encompass an account of the current knowledge of the world with the new instruments where everyone would be capable of engaging in scientific investigation for the betterment of humankind. Although his personality was unattractive his views of scientific methods were influential.

Gibson 174; STC 1172. John Haviland for William Lee unknown

Sylva Sylvarum svie Hist. naturalis et Novus Atlas.
1648. Amsterdam Elzevier 1648 12 ° mit gestochenem Titel 36 612 48 pp.; 87 pp. Pergamenteinband d.Zt. mit neuerem Rückenschildchen; St.a.Tit. Scarce Latin edition of Bacon's celebrated work published the same year as the Leiden edition. First published posthumously in the year of Bacon's death 1626 Sylva Sylvarum is a an aptly-described "miscellany of topics" dealing with the prolongation of life the natural world and the wisdom of the ancients arranged in 1000 numbered paragraphs. William Rawley Bacon's secretary chose to addend the unfinished manuscript of New Atlantis to the former work if only for convenience's sake. Bacon's utopian population famously practice eugenic breeding and are committed fundamentally to the pursuit of scientific learning. Having enjoyed five English editions by 1639 the present work attests to Bacon's popularity beyond British shores; Elzevir in Amsterdam and Hackium in Leiden brought out simultaneous Latin translations in 1648. Hackium's re-engraved title page interestingly follows the original of 1626 rather closely including a globe with outlines of the continents. Die Naturbeschreibung in zehn Centurien mit Naturbeobachtungen verschiedenster Art. Der letzte Teil "Novus Atlas Opus imperfectum cum praefatione W. Rawley" "contains a description of the Island of Bensalem on which there is a cooperative college of Science called Salomon's House . it ranks among the bestknown and most delightful Utopian writings in the world and has been perhaps the most influential" DSB I 375 unknown

Bacon, Francis
Sylva Sylvarum: Or A Natural History in Ten Centuries and New Atlantis.

Small folio 11 ¼ x7 ½ modern calf spine and corners and marbled boards morocco lettering piece engraved title page from 1676 edition inserted 2 12 2 14 215 23 221-228 11 64 31 pp. Lacking original engraved frontispiece title but one from later edition inserted some tears and chips along edges additional original title present light wear to edges faint dampstain and light foxing; otherwise very good. This is an interesting collection of the miscellaneous scientific writings and experiments of Francis Bacon 1561-1626 appended with his utopian work "A New Atlantis." The book first appeared the year after his death edited and published by William Rawley but went through a number of editions reflecting the popularity of his writings. While Bacon would be well educated in his early years as the youngest son in his family he would be left without land money or position upon his father's death in 1579. However thanks to his tremendous intellect and political skills he would have a very successful political and intellectual career and would prosper under James I. Among his many accomplishments would be obtaining the post of attorney general but bribery charges would bar him from ever holding public office again. He would publish a good deal in his later years and legend suggests that his intellectual curiosity would eventually cost him his life when he caught chill after experimenting with the impact of cold temperatures on decaying meat. More recently it has been suggested that his death was caused by "inhaling remedial substances" in an effort to improve his health. ODNB. STC 1173.
William Lee,
