Peter Viertel wrote the screenplay for this adaptation of Hemingway's Pulitzer-Prize winning novella starring Spencer Tracy as the Old Man a role for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor under the direction of John Sturges. ‎Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms October 22 1956 Screenplay by Hecht Ben. Los Angeles: The Selznick Company 1956 Hardcover. Original screenplay. 3 191 leaves. A relatively early pre-production script for the second adaptation of Hemingway's great novel of the First World War. The film starred Rock Hudson and Jennifer Jones under the direction of King Vidor after John Huston left the project. While many versions of this script exist this text would seem to be the one David O. Selznick presented to John Huston when the director was assigned to the picture. Selznick apparently began working with Huston about October 25 1956 three days after the date on the title page of this script. There is a "foreword" dated November 5 1956 as well suggesting this script was printed in late 1956 during the pre-productin process.A fine copy in fine canary yellow printed studio covers. Bound with brad brads. There is a printed cover sheet with a detachable receipt as the first page of the script. The script is numbered so that the studio could keep track of the script. The receipt is still attached. While the cover indicates the order of colors for revision pages this copy does not have any revised pages. he production script was 173 leaves; the post-production as-film script was 152 pages suggesting that this early version has considerable content not available elsewhere.<br/><br/>A Farewell to Arms Original Screenplay for the 1957 film Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox 1957. ‎Photographs. Set of four press photographs announcing Hemingway was very much alive after a plane crash in Africa January 1954‎

‎Hemingway survived two plane crashes in Africa in January 1954. He and his wife Mary Welsh essentially unhurt from the first crash and picked up by a sightseeing boat went down a second time when their rescue plane crashed and burned. Several newspapers reported the Hemingways dead but this false story was soon corrected. Newspapers printed the good news that the internationally renown writer was alive with images of a robust and smiling Hemingway. We offer four of these press photos each with a description attached on aging paper and stamped on verso by the news service. Each is 7"x 9" curled at the edges but otherwise in very good condition. The descriptions attached at the lower edge of each photo are on browned paper brittle at the lower edge where the page remains partially attached to the photograph. The photographs briefly described: <br/>Image 1 Hemingway and Pauline Pfeiffer second wife in Kenya International News Photos 1934. <br/>Image 2 Hemingway and Martha Gellhorn third wife on safari in Africa International News Photos 1940.<br/> Images 3 and 4 Hemingway with American bull fighter Sidney Franklin Kenya International News Photos1937. <br/>Image 5 Hemingway and Mary Welsh his wife at the time of the plane crash "as they arrived in New York in 1950 aboard the Ile de France." ‎New York: Look Magazine 1954. First Edition and Only Printing. One of the rarest of all Ernest Hemingway A items which was unknown for many years until revealed in C. Edgar Grissom’s A Descriptive Bibliography of Ernest Hemingway published in 2011 and is listed as item A.26. This oversize booklet 10 1/2 wide by 13 inches tall separately prints the article and photography for the January 1954 issue of Look Magazine for which Hemingway wrote an original piece. The article is 3500 hundred words plus photographs for which Hemingway wrote the captions. This special printing was the brainchild of the magazine’s publisher Vernon C. Myers who presented it to a small select number of people calling it a literary first “you may want to add to your library.†A little light soiling and use to the printed wrappers.
