Ernest Hemingway
For Whom the Bell Tolls
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1940. First Edition First Printing. First edition first printing with Scribner's "A" on the copyright page. With its original first issue dust jacket lacking the photographer's credit on the rear panel. Measures approximately 9" x 6" with 471 numbered pages.

The book is in very good condition. The boards are well preserved with firm edges. Boards have minor staining and the spine titling has partially worn away. Previous owner's bookplate on the front pastedown. The binding is sound. The dust jacket is in good condition. The original price of $2.75 is present on the front flap. Heavy chipping and wear to the extremities and flap folds with significant chips missing from the spine ends. Creasing and some paper loss evident on the extremities as well.

"For Whom the Bell Tolls" is one of Hemingway's biggest literary triumphs. Written in 1939 and finished in 1940 the first edition was published in October of that year with a print run of 75000 copies. The novel was inspired by Hemingway's experiences as a journalist in Spain during its civil war. The plot centers on an American dynamiter who joins forces with an anti-fascist troupe to carry out the detonation of a bridge. What unfolds is a story of bravery deception love and agony. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is certainly one of Ernest Hemingway's greatest novels. Were it not for the war and politics of the time this novel would have been the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in 1941 - as the jurors voted unanimously in favor of the award.

Please view the many other rare titles available for purchase at our store. We are always interested in purchasing individual or collections of fine books.

Inventory # H6-85. Charles Scribner's Sons unknown

For Whom the Bell Tolls

First Edition/First Printing with the "A" on the copyright page in a first state price clipped dust jacket; A Very Good book in a Fair dust jacket. A well loved and read copy of this novel by one of the great authors of the 20th Century. This copy is in very good condition showing some browning to board hinges moderate foxing to the page edges a PO bookplate and signature to the front pastedown and a small dampstain to the top exterior text block. Housed in a fair dust jacket that is intact but does show a number of areas of heavy tearing and chipping with some loss of material. Overall a decent book in a well used and abused dust jacket but still a first/first in a first state jacket. Not remaindered not ex-library; in a fresh Mylar sleeve and will ship carefully wrapped in a sturdy box.
Scribner's hardcover
