The screenplay was adapted from Hemingway's "worst book" in Hawks' estimation by Jules Furthman and William Faulkner the latter's participation making it the only film on which two winners of the Nobel Prize have ever collaborated. It was Bacall's debut film and where she and Bogart first met. <br /> Faulkner wrote the second revised final version of the script and was responsible for its change of setting from Cuba to Martinique. A terrific collection of four stills 8†x 10†from the acclaimed film For Whom the Bell Tolls adapted from Ernest Hemingway’s classic novel set in the 1930s during Spain’s civil war directed by Sam Wood starring Gary Cooper Ingrid Bergman Akim Tamiroff Katina Paxinou and Arturo De Cordova. All in fine condition. The photographs show: Cooper and Bergman sharing a flirtatious moment and a cup of coffee a particularly lovely shot of Miss Bergman in an intimate moment with Mr. Cooper reclining together on the grass a shot of Bergman and Cooper with a look of contention passing between them while Akim Tamiroff gestures near-by with a crust of bread and the last of Bergman and Cooper sharing a passionate kiss as Cooper is about to leave on his mission to blow up an all-important bridge. A fine set of photographs highlighting the generous gifts of talent and charisma of these two great actors. This compilation begins with an insightful foreword by Ernest's son Patrick and an introductory essay by grandson Sean whose thoughtful selections make this a book that can be appreciated by readers even if they're not interested in hunting. The first section "From Up in Michigan to the Serengeti" includes a couple of Nick Adams stories the "Macomber" and "Kilimanjaro" classics plus numerous excerpts from The Green Hills of Africa. Part 2 "Dispatches from the Field" includes commissioned articles about experiences in Europe and Africa and Part 3 "A Hunter's Return to the Good Country" closes out the collection with stories and reporting about hunting closer to home mainly in Idaho.
