Price intact Jacket is a nice one. Red lettering on front panel still fresh though the small area of red on spine is sunned which is the norm for this title. Rear panel bright and fresh with no issues. Short closed tear at top of front panel light wear at spine ends and very small bookstore lavel on rear flap. Bookplate on front paste-down. Mild bumps; spine lettering rubbed. This is a sound copy but the binding is certainly a bit on the grubby side lacking wear but with more than usual soiling; no doubt due to storage. The dustjacket is also Very Good Minus. It is complete and unclipped $2.75 on flap. Second issue - has "Photograph by Arnold" on rear panel. Shows edgewear and wrinkling. Chipping at foot of spine and a quarter-inch chip across the top. <p><strong>First translation of the novel into Russian. Extremely rare. Not in Libman. </strong>These books were not intended for distribution in bookstores or libraries.</p><p>Ernest Hemingway was in favor with Russian authorities until this novel appeared in 1940. The novel was banned because some prototypes of the characters were executed in Russia and another reason was the Spanish Communist leader Dolores Ibárruri. She never appreciated this novel and was living in Moscow at that time.<br />The first translation of the novel into Russian was finalized in 1941 yet it faced a ban. Hemingway sought the assistance of his Russian acquaintance the poet Konstantin Simonov to explore the possibility of revising the text or omitting certain elements to facilitate its publication in Russian. Unfortunately these efforts did not yield success. However Simonov later revised the translation for the first official Russian edition of the novel composing the foreword. This translation was eventually published in 1968 as volume 3 of Hemingway's '<em>Collection of Works'</em> albeit with some content subjected to censorship.<br />This particular edition represents the unabridged translation free from any omissions and were released as part of a specialized series intended for Soviet authorities. Distributed according to a predetermined list each book in the series was marked with a unique number on its cover corresponding to the numbers specified in the list. After being read each copy had to be returned. These books were not accessible to the average Soviet citizen; they could not be found in bookstores or libraries.</p><p>We couldn't trace any copy in OCLC or in Russian main libraries.</p> Izdatel’stvo inostrannoj literatury hardcover

Hemingway’s dramatic semi-autobiographical novel of fate courage and death in the Spanish Civil War released to much critical acclaim and recommended for the 1941 Pulitzer prize though none was awarded that year. Source of the 1943 Oscar nominated film directed by Sam Wood starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman. Hemingway dedicated the book to comrade paramour and indefatigable war correspondent Martha Gellhorn whom he married the following year. Very Good pastedown margins lightly tanned clean crisp corners sharp binding tight sound and square no ownership signatures or any other markings of any kind. Second issue dust jacket with photographer Lloyd Arnold’s credit beneath the rear panel photo publisher’s price of $2.75 and Henry Seidel Canby blurb on front flap. Arnold was chief photographer for the Sun Valley Company and its Idaho hunting lodge a favorite haunt of Hemingway and fourth wife Mary and Arnold and his wife Tillie became close friends and hunting companions of the Hemingways. Arnold’s 1969 book "Riding High With Hemingway" details many experiences the couples shared.
