‎For Whom The Bell Tolls.‎

‎New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1940. First edition with the Scribners A of the novel that is regarded as one of Hemingway's best works. Octavo original beige cloth. Fine in a very good first issue dust jacket without the photographer's name on the rear panel with some rubbing and wear to the extremities. For Whom the Bell Tolls combines two of Hemingway's recurring obsessions: war and personal honor. "This is the best book Ernest Hemingway has written the fullest the deepest the truest. It will I think be one of the major novels of American literature Hemingway has struck universal chords and he has struck them vibrantly" J. Donald Adams. It was the basis for the 1943 film directed by Sam Wood starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards including Best Picture Best Actor and Best Actress; however only the Greek actress Katina Paxinou won an Oscar for her portrayal of Pilar. ‎HEMINGWAY ERNEST‎

‎For Whom the Bell Tolls‎

‎New York: Scribners 1940. Second printing. Signed presentation copy from Ernest Hemingway to his close childhood friend Bill Smith. Inscribed in black fountain pen ink using Hemingway’s boyhood nickname: “To Bill with much affection Wemedgeâ€. Bill and his sister Katy later married to John Dos Passos summered near the Hemingway home on Horton Bay Michigan. Ernest and Bill knew each other for many years as children before becoming close friends: “It took an old pal of mine Carl Edgar†Smith recalled “and most of the summer to put Ernest and me on really good terms.†In less than a few weeks the three were out at the Point fishing from the dock day and night. Smith in short order acquired a full quota of the nicknames that Hemingway invented for friends.while Hemingway for inexplicable reasons preferred to be called Wemedge.†See James R. Mellow - Hemingway: A Life Without Consequences pages 37-38 Hemingway who entertained fantasies that Katy Smith was secretly attracted to him would later create a fictional erotic relationship between the two in the “Nick Adams†stories. Adams’s nickname in the largely autobiographical series is Wemedge. Laid into the book is an original small photograph of Hemingway and Bill Smith fishing off the Key West in the 1930s which was reproduced in the 1992 Mellow biography of Hemingway. Front hinge expertly repaired else a very good copy with a little general cloth in a bright dust jacket with with a short 1 inch scratch on the spine light wear and two short tears to the rear panel. An exceptional Hemingway association copy enclosed in a morocco leather and cloth clamshell box. Scribners hardcover‎

‎For Whom the Bell Tolls First State‎

‎New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1940. First printing w/Scribner's "A" at copyright. Extremely rare first state dust jacket without photo credit at back. Oatmeal full-cloth boards w/author's stamped signature spine titles on crisp red field moderate shelf wear. Deckled pages very good clean with toning at endps.; no writing. Bind good; hinges intact. Dust jacket with some edge wear chip; unclipped 2.75 protected in new clear sleeve. Rare near fine first edition in near good first state wrapper. Tells the story of Robert Jordan a young American in the International Brigades attached to an anti-fascist guerilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. As an expert in the use of explosives he is assigned to blow up a bridge during an attack on the city of Segovia. Told primarily through the thoughts and experiences of Robert Jordan a character inspired by Hemingway's own experiences in the Spanish Civil War. Jordan travels to Spain to oppose the fascist forces of Generalsimo Francisco Franco. A superior has ordered him to travel behind enemy lines and destroy a bridge using the aid of a group of guerrillas who have been living in the mountains nearby. Here he encounters one of those in their camp Mara a young Spanish native whose life has been shattered by the outbreak of the war. His strong sense of duty clashes with both Republican leader Pablo's unwillingness to commit to a covert operation and his own joie de vivre that is kindled by his newfound love for Mara. The novel graphically describes the unutterable brutality of civil war. 471 pages. Insured post. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Book.
