br. Rabelais è il padre fondatore dell'arte del romanzo. Questa è l'ipotesi che Lakis Proguidis sostiene, seguendo molteplici percorsi che si incrociano lungo tutto il suo libro. L'autore passa allora con leggerezza e profondità dalla comparazione dell'opera di Rabelais con quella dei nostri grandi antenati ai propri ricordi personali, dalla farsa alla linguistica, dalla Storia alla critica della critica, dall'analisi scrupolosa del testo alla cronaca, da Omero all'attualità. In Rabelais, afferma Proguidis, come del resto in tutti i romanzieri, la forma del passato non è né un faro infallibile (classicismo) né una realizzazione passeggera (avanguardia), ma un brandello di tessuto che va continuamente rammendato e continuamente arricchito con nuovi motivi esistenziali. Sebbene il caso giochi un grande ruolo, nulla è arbitrario. Tutto ruota attorno allo stesso nocciolo estetico la cui genesi è qui presentata per la prima volta: il suo nome è riso romanzesco.

Mild toning to paper labels; front hinge thinly cracked a few pages opened roughly - about VG lacking the presumed dustwrapper. The twenty additional illustrations though never explicitly attributed and hinted at only in the front cover label are by the radical cartoonist William Siegel who was a frequent contributor to New Masses and other CP-affiliated publications. There is nothing particularly racy about either the translation or the illustrations so it's unclear why the anonymous publisher took such pains to issue the work anonymously - unless it was to tempt the buyer with an intentionally deceptive appearance of smut. The edition is either scarce or more likely other cataloguers simply have neglected to attribute the illustrations to Siegel. Privately Printed unknown books

Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown of each volume. Some old ink marginalia to final blanks of volumes I and II. Some faded ownership initials to title-pages. Some light and occasional foxing. Overall a very handsome set. ìRabelais 1494-ca. 1553 was held in high regard by his contemporaries as an eminent physician as a pioneer of humanism and as the author of an entertaining Book. It is in this last capacity that he is chiefly known to posterity. He published Pantagruel the first installment of his great work late in 1532 or in 1533; Gargantua in 1534; the Tiers Livre de Pantagruel in 1546; part of the Quart Livre in 1548 and the whole Book in 1552. The authenticity of the Fifth Book is questionable; it certainly contains work by other hands and was perhaps worked up from fragments and imperfect or rejected drafts left by Rabelais at his death.The work does not form a single artistic whole. Composed at intervals over twenty years it varies greatly in character as the spirit moved the author or circumstances prompted; it is loosely held together by a thread of narrative and abounds in digressions. We have in the first two Books the fantastic tale of a family of giants written so Rabelais tells us in moments of relaxation for the solace of the sick though occasion is taken to expose the authorÃs views on education the monks and the theologians. In the Third Book the fantastic features are abandoned and we pass to a series of amusing and dramatic discussions of the questions of the day. The Fourth and Fifth Books take us on a voyage to Cathay and provide occasion for satire and propaganda suited to the political views of the French court. The interest of the whole lies in the vivid picture it gives not only of French society in the early days of the Renaissance but also of the Protean author himself: his enthusiastic humanism his love of life in all its manifestations and hatred of asceticism his interest in knowledge of all kinds above all his contempt for monkery and scholasticismî The Oxford Companion to French Literature. Heath Robinson two volumes complete quarto size 815 total pp. A monumental collection of Francois Rabelais' ca. 1493-1553 satirical novels of the life of two giants Gargantua and Pantagruel this two-volume set contains all five books telling of the adventures of these two characters; the text is rampant with Rabelais' wit as well as baudy and often grotesque humour. <br/><br/>Both volumes are filled with illustrations by William Heath Robinson 1872-1944 an exemplary book illustrator and cartoonist "the only British illustrator to become a 'household name'" Houfe. Moderate scattered foxing and browning tear to l8 with loss to bottom corner including text; generally very clean internally. With the bottle plate and the Prognostication Pantagrueline. One of the central works of world literature and possibly the final word on sausages. 800 30 blank 193 5pp.<br/><br/>Almost without exception an exact reproduction of the first four books of the 1556 edition the only change noted in Pierre Paul Plan's bibliography is an added anti-Calvinist line in the third book. "The text of the first two books of Rabelais has been reprinted from the first edition 1653 of Urquhart's translation. Footnotes initialed "M" are drawn from the Maitland Club edition 1838; other footnotes are by the translator. Urquhart's translation of Book III appeared posthumously in 1693 with a new edition of Books I and II under Motteux's editorship. Motteux's rendering of Books IV and V followed in 1708. Occasionally as the footnotes indicate passages omitted by Motteux have been restored from the 1738 copy edited by Ozell.
