Bradel demi-maroquin vert à coins dos lisse titre doré date en pied couvertures et dos conservés reliure de l'époque. . Édition originale. Frontispice de Louise Abbéma représentant Sarah Bernhardt dans le rôle de l'Aiglon. La couverture est ornée sur le premier plat d'une composition dorée en relief par René Lalique. Un des rares exemplaires imprimés sur papier vert Empire celui-ci nominatif pour Octave Mirbeau. Il est enrichi de 2 portraits gravés celui de l'Aiglon publié par Blaisot et celui de Rostand gravé par Desmoulin avec pour remarque le visage de Sarah Bernhardt. . L'Aiglon naquit aux Tuileries le 20 mars 1811 où cent un coups de canons annoncèrent aux Parisiens la naissance tant attendue du fils de l'empereur. Constitutionnellement muni du titre de « prince impérial » il reçoit en outre celui de « roi de Rome » : le baptême sera célébré le 9 juin en la cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris. La défaite de Waterloo contraindra Napoléon Ier à abdiquer en sa faveur mais le gouvernement provisoire de Fouché fera comme si de rien n'était et les chambres refuseront de proclamer celui qui se trouve depuis 1814 en exil à la cour d'Autriche. Il restera pour l'histoire celui qui a « régné » vingt jours du 22 juin au 7 juillet 1815. À Vienne il reçoit une solide instruction religieuse philosophique ou militaire sous l'affection de son grand-père l'Empereur François II le perdant d'Austerlitz et de Wagram qui pour sceller la paix et le traité de Schönbrunn avait offert à Napoléon sa fille aînée Marie-Louise d'Autriche qui deviendra la seconde épouse de Napoléon. Après l'abdication de Napoléon en 1815 François II lui donne le titre de duc de Reichstadt. Il sera élevé par sa mère et sa tante l'archiduchesse Sophie sous la gouvernance du comte de Dietrichstein. Le prince impérial meurt le 22 juillet 1832 âgé seulement de vingt et un ans au palais de Schönbrunn. Le diagnostic est celui d'une tuberculose foudroyante mais la thèse de l'empoisonnement n'a jamais été écartée. Sans alliance ni postérité sa disparition mettra quoi qu'il en soit un terme aux sentiments de fascination et de crainte des grandes cours d'Europe sur un éventuel retour aux affaires du seul descendant légitime de Napoléon Ier. Le 15 mars 1900 le public découvre pour la première fois la pièce d'Edmond Rostand et dans le rôle de l'Aiglon une comédienne costumée en homme : Sarah Bernhardt. Le succès est immense. La pièce donnera quelques immortelles et fameuses tirades dont celle de Séraphin Flambeau le grognard légendaire de la Grande Armée qui s'introduit à Schönbrunn auprès de l'Aiglon : « Nous les petits des obscurs des sans-grades » Acte II scène 9 un rôle endossé par Lucien Guitry puis par Coquelin l'Aîné. On ne connaît que quatre autres exemplaires sur ce papier : celui pour Jean Richepin Tajan octobre 2018 n° 161 ; celui pour Mitzy Dalty comédienne de la Belle Époque et maîtresse de l'éditeur Fasquelle Bibliothèque Natural PBA 2009 n° 567 avec l'ex-libris de la comédienne celui offert à Louis Barthou des bibliothèques Pierre Guérin puis Comte Emmanuel d'André et un exemplaire probablement d'auteur conservé broché.
