‎The exceedingly rare second edition of Brument’s attempt at a sequel to Rousseau's ""La Nouvelle Héloïse"" with the story revolving around Henriette, the daughter of Julie de Wolmar, a central character in Rousseau's novel. The first edition was published in Geneve in 1768 – both editions are of the utmost scarcity and are rarely found in the trade. “Henriette de Wolmar” is part of a broader trend in the 18th century where Rousseau's “La Nouvelle Héloïse” inspired numerous derivative works, including sequels, parodies, and adaptations – all early examples of fan-fiction. The success of Rousseau's novel sparked a wave of creative responses, as readers and writers sought to expand, reinterpret or critique the original story. In Rousseau's original work, “La Nouvelle Héloïse”, Julie is portrayed as a virtuous woman who navigates the complexities of love, duty, and social expectations. Brument's sequel, however, shifts the narrative focus to Julie's role as a mother, particularly highlighting her possessiveness and jealousy towards her daughter. This jealousy serves as the central conflict of the story illustrating the psychological and emotional turmoil that can be within family relationships. Provenance: Valdemar's Castle.‎

Both volumes in excellent condition, clean and fresh, printed on good paper and plates with tissueguards. Inscription in ink in both volumes reads: ""Emma Curtis the gift of MS. Taylor(?) 1795.""‎

‎Rousseaus' popularization of the linnean system ran through many editions, and was first issued as a part of his posthumously published ""Works"" as ""Letters elementaire...."" in 1782. The ""38 Plates"" by Martyn was first published 1788 as a sort illustrative companion to the text of Rousseau's letters. Here they come together in the fine printings of 1794. - Pritzel 7824 - Soulsby No 704, but this 4th edition not in the collection.‎

‎(Unsigned, and no date, but penned between 1746 and 1751). 1 leaf 4to (25,5 x 19 cm), off-white paper in fine condition. Fully penned on both recto (24 lines) and verso (5 lines).‎

‎This magnificent manuscript leaf in Rousseau's hand constitutes notes on marriage rituals taken from ""Rituel des Chartres"", which was printed in Paris in 1531. This manuscript leaf is part of a grandiose project that Rousseau was working on with his employer Madame Dupin during his years as her secretary. The project was that of writing the history of womankind. With its focus on gender equality, the work is nothing less than pioneering and would no doubt have been a work of seminal importance in the history of feminism and women's rights, had it ever been published. The manuscript ended up comprising more than 2.000 pages, but was never printed. Louise Marie Madeline Fontaine Dupin (1706-1799) was one of the most famous salonnieres of the 18th century, renowned for the beauty as well as her intelligence. Rousseu met her in 1743 and took an instant liking to her. In 1745, she offered him the position as her private secretary and tutor to her son. During his six years in her employment, he spent most of the time working on the grandiose project of the history of women, until it was abandoned in 1751. ""In the years between 1745 and 1749 Jean Jacques Rousseau was employed by Louise Marie Madeline Dupin as a research assistant on her ambitious project to delineate in print the history of women. After years of labor by Rousseau and Madame Dupin her ""Ouvrage sur les Femmes"" was shelved, unfinished. The research notes, drafts, and fair copies written by Rousseau and his employer were stored at the chateau of Chenonceaux, essentially forgotten, until their sale at a series of auctions held between 1951 and 1958."" ‎"Édition collective de Jean-Jacques publiée par Didot, sous le Consulat. Dès avant sa mort, l'engouement suscité par les écrits de Jean-Jacques encourage les éditeurs à proposer des éditions collectives. Le renom du citoyen de Genève atteint des sommets sous la période révolutionnaire, stimulant un intérêt pour ses écrits politiques. Établie par Jacques-André Naigeon - le disciple de Diderot -, François Joseph Fayolle et l'abbé François Bancarel, cette nouvelle édition entend se ""distinguer de toutes celles qui ont paru jusqu'ici"", et servir ainsi ""de type à celles qu'on donnera dans la suite"". Le soin des éditeurs s'est porté sur l'établissement des textes. ""Le Contrat Social, et le Discours sur l'Origine de l'inégalité […], ont été imprimé sur un exemplaire corrigé de la main de l'auteur […]. L'Emile a été collationné avec le plus grand soin sur deux manuscrits autographes, […] ; nous n'avons pas balancé à rétablir divers passages […] pour lesquels on avait exigé des cartons […]. Le texte des Confessions a été rétabli dans toute sa pureté d'après le manuscrit que Rousseau avait enveloppé et cacheté […] que sa veuve vint offrir, dès 1793, à la Convention nationale. […]. Le citoyen Clos, nous a généreusement offert l'exemplaire des Lettres de la Montagne, qu'il tient de l'amitié de Jean-Jacques, et dans lequel on remarque plusieurs corrections de sa main, […]"". Cette édition comprend 20 volumes auxquels ont été réunis les 2 tomes de la Correspondance originale et inédite de J.-J. Rousseau avec Mme Latour de Franqueville et M. Du Peyrou, Paris, Giguet et Michaud, an XI-1803. L'ouvrage comprend 14 planches de musique notée ""airs principaux du Devin du village"" (t. IX), 13 planches hors-texte repliées de partitions et schémas (t. XII, Dictionnaire de musique) ainsi qu'une reproduction en fac-similé imprimé à l'encre brune d'une lettre manuscrite de Rousseau adressée à Madame de Créqui, en 1751 (t. XVIII). Cette édition de Didot ne comporte initialement pas d'illustrations, mais notre exemplaire a été enrichi de 25 planches issues de la ""collection Dupréel"" (Cohen, 913 ; Girardin, pp. 112-146), dont 10 gravées sur des dessins de Moreau le Jeune et 4 d'après Le Barbier. Parmi cet ensemble de tailles-douces, on note, à côté des illustrations des écrits de Rousseau, son portrait en médaillon numismatique à l'antique par Augustin de Saint-Aubin, ainsi que son tombeau sur l'île des Peupliers à Ermenonville. Très bel exemplaire en reliures uniformes de Jean-Claude Bozerian, dit Bozerian l'Aîné, actif à Paris, de 1790 à 1811. Le fer répété au dos des volumes représente une figure de la Charité allaitant, assise entourée de trois autres enfants. L'un brandit un bonnet phrygien au bout d'un bâton, tandis que deux d'entre eux allument le feu d'un vase ardent. De la bibliothèque Rudolf Gutman (1880-1966) avec ex-libris.
