W. wookcut vignettes and 1 1/2 p. of musical notes. � The not common first edition of the first biography of Jean-Jacques Rousseau an important work of French Enlightenment published in the year of the French Revolution.<br><br>The work was published the year after Rousseau's death and is highly interesting due to its numerous anecdotes several of which are not to be found anywhere else; Not all of them can be called fully reliable though.<br><br>The work is also interesting not only as the first biography of Rousseau and as a contemporary source to the life of the great French philosopher but also as a testimony to the influence and fascination of Rousseau to revolutionary France. The cult-role that Rousseau played before and during the French Revolution is difficult to overlook and the degree of his popularity during the second half of the 18th century must be deemed no less than astonishing. <br><br>This first biography of Rousseau begins with six letters that are supposed to be genuine written by the author and dated 1788-89; one of them is to Madame de Sta�l and they all contain interesting anecdotes concerning Rousseau.<br><br>The author an impoverished count who was born in 1756 and committed suicide in 1817 due to his ruin because of a punishment from the Tribunal was an enthusiastic Rousseauphile member of his cousin Rivarol's literary circle and with the progress of the revolution a fervent royalist. He was imprisoned 1800-1802 under the Consulate due to his writings. As the biographer of Rousseau also his literary presence is of interest. He states in the preface that he will present the facts as they were as they appeared to him or at least how he thought they appeared p. 15 and he ends the preface with the words: "Pour bien chantes Jean-Jacque il faut �tre un grand homme." p. 16. unknown

Virtually no work has had as great an impact on paedagogics as this one. <br><br>Being one of the most influential thinkers of the 18th century Rousseau is considered one of the indirect causes of the French Revolution. In Rousseau one certainly finds one of the most influential spokesmen for 18th century thought and it is primarily the thoughts of him and Voltaire that are put into action with the Revolution. Not only in France can the effects of his philosophy and thoughts on upbringing and education be clearly seen; -his ideas were of decisive character to the generation of artists writers poets philosophers etc. in the beginning to middle of the 19th century which seminally affects Danish thought as it is in this period that our most important and famous cultural personas are being influenced e.g. H.C. Andersen and S�ren Kierkegaard; thus this first Danish translation is of great importance and interest. <br>In Danish literature there is talk about the Rousseauan spirit and it is in this spirit that the entire literary production of H.C. Andersen can be viewed -directly or indirectly. Rousseau's three main thoughts in �mile - on the childlike on the natural and on simple religious faith - fits like a glove on the main messages and morals of H.C. Andersen's works.<br><br>S�ren Kierkegaard is known to have owned a copy of Rousseau's �mile in French as well as a copy of this first Danish translation see "Auktionsprotokol over S�ren Kierkegaards Bogsamling" no. 941-43. As opposed to H.C.A. though the philosophy and educational program of Rousseau does not correspond with the Christianity of Kierkegaard who however quotes and comments on R. and his writings on several occasions in his diaries.<br>In �mile Rousseau poses an entirely new approach to education and the upbringing of children. His thoughts were exceedingly controversial the work was burnt by the executioner immediately after its first appearance and Rousseau had to flee the country due to a warrant for his arrest. There is no need to say that these new thoughts were also widely influential on Danish thought and this especially after the appearance of the Danish translation 34-37 years after the French original. Not only Kierkegaard and H.C.A. were influenced by this great thinker so were the likes of Ingemann one of our greatest poets.<br><br>"The first and last of these i.e. H�loise and �mile with their sentimental expression of deism gave much offence and Rousseau like Voltaire was forced to flee to Prussia. XVIII 264 8 pp. � The rare first edition of this important work which inaugurated one of the most significant intellectual debates of the 18th century.<br><br>The letter is Rousseau's answer to the article on the city of Geneva which his friend d'Alembert had written for the French "Encyclop�die". In the article d'Alembert had suggested that the citizens of Geneva establish a theatre which - so d'Alembert - would lead to a refinement of the mores and ways of the Genevans not to mention adding a bit of sparkle to a city which he described as dreary and sad. The response by Rousseau opened up what was one of the most important intellectual polemics of the 18th century.<br><br>Rousseau a citizen of Geneva by birth uses the article by d'Alembert as a springboard for a reflection on the place of culture in society. He relates the institution of the theatre to the question of political morality and attempts to define boundaries between the morally innocuous and corruptive forms of entertainment. <br><br>The letter is permeated by a pronounced Platonism. The arguments which Rousseau advances against the theatre closely recall those advanced by Plato in the Republic against the poets. As Plato Rousseau focuses his attention on the artificial nature of the theatrical spectacle which leads the mind astray away from the concerns of an industrious and fulfilled life. <br><br>For anybody with an interest in the work and life of Rousseau the "Lettre � d'Alembert" is an invaluable document. Not only does it connect Rousseau's earlier writings - the Discourse on the Arts and Sciences 1750 and the Discourse on the Origin and Basis of Inequality among Men 1754 - to his later major work; it also offers an insight into the differences of opinion that would lead Rousseau to break with the circle around the encyclopaedists. <br><br>The present edition is unknown to Dufour and Tchmerzine but recent research has determined that this is the actual first printing see for instance: Azers "Histoire de l'Impression et la publication de la "Lettre � d'Alembert"" S�nelier. hardcover

Seule la deuxième partie contient un feuillet de catalogue celui de la première est absent tout comme celui de la troisième et de la cinquième. Les fleurons de titre des tome I et VI sont identiques avec les deux vers italiens de Petrarque les autres possèdent un fleuron semblable sauf pour le quatrième. Reliures en plein veau brun glacé d'époque. Dos à nerfs ornés. Pièces de titre en maroquin havane pièces de tomaison en maroquin rouge. Coiffes arrachées. Mors supérieur du tome I fendu avec manques ; mors inférieur fragile et fendu en tête. Second tome au mors supérieur fendu et en partie ouvert en partie ouvert au mors inférieur. 3e tome avec un mors supérieur fendu en tête et queue. Tous les coins émoussés. Le faux-titre de la seconde partie et le dernier feuillet de texte sont collés entre eux idem pour celui de la quatrième partie et le dernier feuillet de texte de la troisième idem pour celui de la sixième partie et le dernier feuillet de texte de la cinquième. Ce grand roman sensible épistolaire connut un très vif succès dès sa parution on tira 4000 exemplaires de l'édition originale et l'œuvre ne connut pas moins de 70 éditions entre 1761 et 1800. La demande se fit tellement forte que les éditeurs se mirent à louer les volumes à la journée et même à l'heure. Elle est illustrée d'un frontispice de Cochin et de douze planches hors-texte gravées par Le Mire avec des encadrements de Gravelot. Ces figures sont les mêmes que celles de l'édition originale hormis la douzième. Pages de titre en rouge et noir. Cette édition contient les deux préfaces notamment la fameuse seconde dialoguée. Reliures de l'époque en plein veau d'époque fauve marbré. Dos lisses richement ornés de fleurons dorés pièces de titre et de tomaison de maroquin rouge. Triple filet d'encadrement sur les plats. Un manque en tête du tome 1 au mors en tête. Mors supérieur étroitement fendu en queue au tome 1. Tête du tome 3 arasée ; mors supérieur fendu en queue ; manque à la pièce de titre.
