‎RICHARDSON, Dorothy M; [Alice THOMAS ELLIS/ Anna HAYCRAFT]‎

‎Pilgrimage Interim‎

‎London: Duckworth & Co. 1919. Cloth. Good. FIRST EDITION. Publisher's blue cloth spine and upper board lettered and ruled in black. Spine and board edges faded head of spine frayed and bumped dints to top edge. Edges darkened and endpapers a little grubby toned "File" scored decisively in black pencil across title page as was Duckworth's practice else tight and tidy. Good A grand association copy of the fifth "chapter" of Richardson's pioneering modernist project. From Duckworth's archive and the library of Alice Thomas Ellis 1932-2005 born Anna Lindholm novelist columnist & who as Anna Haycraft was Duckworth's highly respected fiction editor from 1968 when her husband Colin Haycraft bought the publishing house. Haycraft's most celebrated client was Beryl Bainbridge and Thomas Ellis' most well known novels were the Booker-nominated The 27th Kingdom 1982 and Unexplained Laughter 1985. Her novels were "spare beautifully written and often with a supernatural or macabre element" and complex like herself and her subject matter: "She wrote about strong and independent women yet she was staunchly anti-feminist. She was averse to housework but cooked delicious food for her friends and children's friends who dropped by though she rarely sat down to eat preferring to linger in the doorway throwing an occasional remark into the conversation." Colvin 2005. Provenance: Trevanion & Dean Auctioneers. Clare Colvin 2005 'Obituary: Alice Thomas Ellis' The Guardian. Duckworth & Co. hardcover‎

‎Alfred A. Knopf 1916. Hardcover. Good. 0x0x0. Richardson's Influential Pilgrimage Series Interesting provenance previously owned by Babette Deutsch. 1916 printing. Bound in publisher's cloth. Paper spine label. Hardcover. Edge wear. Spine ends and label chipped. Contemporary signature of Deutsch on front end page. Scattered markings. 312 p. 19 cm.
"Dorothy Richardson is best-known for writing Pilgrimage a sequence of thirteen novels that follows the life of a character called Miriam Henderson between the ages of about seventeen and forty. Miriam's experience closely follows Richardson's own and for this reason Pilgrimage is often considered to be a fictionalized autobiography. With Pilgrimage Richardson created a uniquely detailed and deeply personal record of the life of an educated British woman in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century." - University of Oxford
"In her poetry novels and translations Babette Deutsch interwove elements of vastly different cultures and times from the Bible and Shakespeare to Russian and Japanese literature. Deutsch first book of poems Banners was published in 1919. Her second book of poetry Honey Out of a Rock dealt with Jewish and biblical subjects and incorporated elements of haiku and imagism. She translated Pushkin and other Russian poets and wrote literary criticism on Shakespeare and Coleridge as well as modern poets. Her knowledge of her field was highly regarded and she served as a consultant for the Library of Congress from 1960 to 1966. She lectured at the New School briefly before becoming a professor at Columbia University where she taught for almost thirty years retiring in 1971." - Jewish Women's Archive Alfred A. ‎Richardson, Thomas‎

‎Place: America A Theatre Piece Cover title‎

‎New York: National Association for the Advancement of Colored People 1940. very good. 7¾†x 5 5/8â€. Stapled self-wrappers. Pp. 52. Very good: both wraps with a moderate corner dogear and some faint soiling penciled notation to top edge of front; two leaves with a mild dogear else internally fresh.

This is a complex and moving theatrical work based on the history of the NAACP. It was written by an African American playwright and community theater organizer Thomas Richardson with an informative foreword by noted Black professor poet and activist Sterling A. Brown.

A professor of African American literature and folklore at Howard for 40 years and visiting lecturer at myriad institutions Sterling A. Brown taught the likes of Toni Morrison Stokely Carmichael and Amiri Baraka. He wrote poetry chronicling the lives of the poor and the enslaved served on the advisory board of the NAACP and was named the first Poet Laureate of the District of Columbia in 1984. In this book's foreword he introduced Thomas Richardson as a man of “zest and ambition†who had co-founded Washington D.C.'s Negro Repertory Players and organized the Negro Community Theatre of Richmond Virginia:

“In spite of disappointments here and there he has remained dedicated to his task: to bring to American Negroes what they will recognize as a picture of their lives . . . to develop community theatres where producing acting and playwriting talent will be nurtured and where Negro audiences so long pushed away may partake in some measure at least of the great gifts of the theatre.†

From Richardson's obituary we learned that later as “international vice president†of the United Federal Workers of America he was “instrumental in having the Federal Bureau of Printing and Engraving hire its first Negro apprentice.†He was active in desegregation efforts and with the American Peace Crusade founded a public relations agency in New York and was named one of Ebony magazine's “men of distinction.†He died in 1963.

Both men described the complexity of this play in the book. Brown wrote that it made use of the “multi-scene form derived from the technique of the Living Newspaper of the Federal Theatre Project.†Richardson reasoned that “if an adequate job was to be done†in dramatizing “the development of such a large and vital organization†as the NAACP then “the usual boundaries of play construction must be extended.†He deemed the work a “Theatre Piece†and gave detailed production notes. ‎RICHARDSON, Th[omas]‎

‎Plan of Queens Leaze situate in the Manor & Parish of Bray in the County of Berks held by lease from the Crown to Trustees for the parish of Bray by Th. Richardson & Son Surveyors 1790.‎

‎London: Thomas Richardson & Sons 1790. 585 by 326mm. 23 by 12.75 inches. Manuscript plan ink with wash colour manuscript inscription to verso minor dust soiling to corners tear to upper portion of map skilfully repaired. This elusive plan of Queens Leaze in Berkshire is an example of one of the many surveys conducted in the eighteenth century in order to record the extent and use of crown lands. King George III had a passion for geography amassing a personal collection of over 50000 maps which are now in the keeping of the British Library. Under his reign the mapping industry saw great progression in the instruments and principles used by cartographers giving rise to more accurate geographical representations as expertly exhibited by the Ordnance Survey which began the year after this plan was produced. There is evidence that the surveyor of Queens Leaze Thomas Richardson had previously worked on the king's cartographical projects with his plan of Richmond completed "under the direction of Peter Burrell Esq. His Majesty's Surveyor General". The Manor of Bray identified as the land to the right of this plan was one of the original hundreds of Berkshire recorded in the Domesday book where the land is said to have been worth 18 hides. It remained property of the crown until 1821 when it was sold at auction for £6800 and divided into 16 smaller plots. On the left side of the plan the estate of the wonderfully-named Peniston Portlock Powney MP is shown. The Powney family owned Ives Place here the "Manor of Ives" during the eighteenth century but it had previously passed through many hands and played host to a variety of residents including Anne of Cleaves. Separating the Manor of Bray and the Manor of Ives is Queens Leaze a long and narrow tract of ground surrounded by a broad deep ditch although neither this plan nor any written record suggests how the land was used. Kerry does note that the fees levied on the local parishoners contributed towards the maintenance of the Church in Bray but there is no evidence of either church or parishoners on the plan. These simple surveys were used to keep track of the crown lands and the manuscript title to the verso suggests that at some point it may have been compiled into a collection along with other such plans. Kerry 'The History and Antiquities of the Hundred of Bray in the County of Berks' 1861; Thorne 'POWNEY Peniston Portlock' The History of Parliament: the House of Commons 1790-1820 1986.
