First edition of an important work on Morocco. James Richardson 1806–1851 was a traveller in Africa and anti-slavery campaigner who worked for the Malta Times. 'There he set up a branch of the anti-slavery society . and established contact with all British consular agents in north Africa becoming a warm friend of Colonel Hanmer George Warrington consular-general in Tripoli and a particular enemy of the slave trade. Having heard that under British pressure the bey of Tunis had agreed to stop the export of slaves from Tunis and the public sale of slaves there Richardson travelled there in 1842 to present him with a petition of lavish praise cited in the Anti-Slavery Reporter 23 March 1842 45. In 1843 he set off on a mission to gather statistics on slavery for the anti-slavery society and to persuade the Sultan of Morocco to reject slavery' ODNB. Richardson describes the political and social organisation of Morocco visiting many remote places and reports at length on the old Jewish communities of the country. He died on his last journey in Central Africa. Provenance: The dedicatee of the this copy was most likey Andrew Findlater who worked for the Edinburgh publisher of the eponymous dictionary Chambers. It is most likely that Richardson' widow inscribed the title-page. Findlater 'also contributed a series of essays entitled Notes of Travel and various other articles for The Scotsman' ODNB. hardcover

Contemporary half morocco and marbled boards; foxing limited to endpapers overall in excellent shape. First edition of this account of Richardson's first expedition to Africa. The idea to reach the "celebrated Oasis of Ghadames . . . amidst the most appalling desolations of the Great Saharan Wilderness" came to Richardson via the accidental reading of a brochure on a table in the Algiers public library. This glance resulted in a journey from Tunis and Tripoli in Libya to Ghadames and Ghat in the middle of the Sahara chronicled in his Travels in the treat desert of Sahara. Readers travel with Richardson and his group through cities trader routes and more oases learning the language the culture and the religion of the people whom they encounter. It is as fascinating and rich as any nineteen th-century travel narrative. A review in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society states: "These volumes are useful contributions to our knowledge of the interior of the imperfectly known regions of Northern Africa; and they describe some hundreds of miles of desert routes over which no Europeans had previously passed as well as several of the cities of the Desert of which we had not before received accounts from European visitors" Vol. 18 p. lix. Indeed Richardson returned to the area in 1850 to cross the elevated plain of the Hammada the first European to ever do so. It was on that journey that he died of a mysterious illness. Richardson 1806-1851 was an English explorer with an ambition to propagate Christianity and suppress slavery in Africa. First edition of this account of James Richardson's 1806-1851 first expedition to Africa. Richardson was an English explorer and ardent anti-slavery campaigner; he considered the slave trade to be "the most gigantic system of wickedness that world has ever seen" Wright Libya Chad and the Central Sahara p. 68. In 1845 Richardson joined a Sahara-bound expedition leaving Tripoli. With it he travelled to "Ghadames became the first European to visit Ghat and after a nine-month long and arduous journey through Fezzan arrived safely back in Tripoli" Embacher cataloguer's translation. His account includes descriptions of the major cities in the Fezzan region trade routes and oases as well as the culture religion and traditions of the Tuaregs. Richardson also frequently refers to the trans-Saharan slave trade and the position of slaves in local Tuareg communities a subject he had already discussed in his "Report on the Slave-Trade of the Great Desert" written for the Anti-Slavery Reporter and Aborigines' Friend upon his return to London in 1846.
