First Edition. 562 pages separately engraved title page noting illustrations are by Bendann Brothers. 4to. 3/4 leather over pebbled cloth covered boards. Illustrated with sixty two tissue protected photographic unsigned portraits of luminaries fifty-one from life the balance copyprints after paintings or engravings. The photographs are in excellent condition strong and rich. Gilt ruling and decoration on raised bands on spine. Overall minor wear to extremities. Where leather rubbed toned to match. Page edges tinted red. One front endpaper with inked previous owner names and past purchase date. Small chip missing from front marbled endpaper occasional corners turned from past readers with bad habits. Seven pages noted with a few words underlined. No doubt the publisher's trade edition the deluxe edition which we've also owned had facsimile signatures underneath each portrait and a deluxe binding. Cloth. The first 146 pages are a historical sketch of the area by Brantz Mayer titled "Baltimore As it Was and As it Is: A Historical Sketch of the Ancient Town and Modern City from the foundation in 1729 to 1870; Compiled and written from Authentic Materials.". The second section is titled "Biographical" and provides biographical sketches and in many cases photographs from life of those worthy of inclusion. John W. Woods printer. Première traduction française donnée par l'abbé Prévost de ce roman du célèbre littérateur anglais Samuel Richardson qui était initialement imprimeur à Londres. Sans cet imprimeur petit-bourgeois typique de la Cité de Londres le développement du roman anglais et avec lui des romans européens eût sans doute été retardé de plusieurs années. Il en a donné la première formule en montrant les tensions psychologiques et morales chez des êtres dans une situation telle que leurs relations et tout leur psychisme sont le jeu de conflits terribles où s'affrontent les forces sociales et les exigences profondes des individus tant sentimentales que morales et religieuses. Zion Church in Akron Ohio. <br /> <br /> The concert was hosted by the Hampton Miracle Singers a Black gospel group based out of Akron and featured performances by the F.C. Atkins Male Chorus a group associated with the Psalmist Baptist Church of Baltimore Maryland. Both Westley Temple and Palmist Baptist continue to serve their communities today the latter now operating under the name "New Palmist Baptist Church."<br /> <br /> 14 x 22 inches. First edition of this excellent anthology of short stories on Alaska and the North filled with accounts of hunting for gold loneliness salmon fishing smoky places of Dawson the chechako in Skagway and the departing Sourdough. Many of these had first appeared in such magazines as Adventure Collier’s American Legion Liberty Argosy and Blue Book. Pierce 1881-1966 served in the U.S. Navy graduated from the Univ. of Washington and became one of America’s most prolific Western writers with over 1500 short stories 3 novels and 4 feature films writing under the pseudonyms of Erle Stanly Pierce and Seth Ranger as well. Contemporary three-quarter green morocco over green cloth marbled endpapers gilt lettering on spine scuffing edgewear rubbing still a VG copy from the library of Senator Robert Jackson Gamble 1851-1924 former US Representative and Senator of South Dakota during President Teddy Roosevelt’s administration. First edition of both these Geological Survey reports including the detailed description of Copper River District by Schrader who was the first to detail and document the mineral resources and the first published photographs of mining operations. Brooks and the other surveyors in the expeditions of 1900 which continued the 1898 explorations were grueling surveying expeditions and through their mapping were able to achieve accuracy which is still current. Original full red morocco ornately stamped in blind and gilt; 8vo; 31 manuscript pages including an illustrated short story landscapes in pencil Havana the Hudson River harbor of St. Thomas Martinique and 3 colored-pencil cartoons of American Indians these seemingly contributed by a child. Just a little scuffed along joints and edges of boards else fine. Likely the work of Horace Richardson the title-page and "publication information" see above states that this unique item was "copied" by him and one of the drawings most of which are clearly by the same artist is initialed "H. R." The book does indeed seem to correspond at least in part with a journey on the Winfield Scott a sidewheel steamer that transported cargo and passengers from San Francisco and Panama during the California Gold Rush -- then sank in December of 1853. The landscapes are nicely accomplished: "Yosemite Falls from Black's Hotel" signed "H.R." "Highland Park Hotel Aiken S.C." "Vineyard Haven" "View from the Window in our Parlor in the Hotel El Telegrafo Havana 1872" "View from my Window at the West Point Hotel Looking up the Hudson 1872" and "Fort de France Martinique from the Sea." Opens with a weird little short story in which the malefactor Joseph Shed spends his entire life stealing stockings even dirty ones punishment be damned. <br/><br/> hardcover

A fine photograph of the Chicago home of Franklin MacVeagh at the corner of Lake Shore Drive and Shiller Street designed by H. H. Richardson who received the commission in July 1885. The house was completed in 1887 the year following Richardson's death. Franklin MacVeagh 1837-1934 was a Chicago banker and one-time Secretary of the Treasury under William Howard Taft. Mackenzie gilt spines in six compartments red and green spine labels all edges speckled red; xxiv4591; xi14771pp. Leather a bit dried and scuffed at extremities uneven dark spotting to spines moderate foxing to early leaves else a Very Good internally quite fresh set of James Fenimore Cooper's travelogue first composed in 1830 while traveling through the United States.<br /> <br /> Provenance: Armorial ex libris of Frances Mary Richardson Currer to both front pastedowns. By the age of thirty Currer 1785-1861 the unmarried sole heir to both the Richardson and Currer estates had amassed one of the most celebrated private libraries of her generation. She was considered the first as well as the greatest female bibliophile in Europe with "a heart as big as St Paul's Dome and as warm as Volcanic lava" Dawson Turner cf. Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.<br /> <br /> As well as collecting in the areas of the natural sciences topography antiquities history classics illustrated and early printed books Currer was also an active and generous patron of many charities and public institutions including the school at Cowan Bridge attended by the Brontë sisters. In fact their lives may have intersected more than once with the imminent bibliophile who is believed to have paid off Patrick Brontë's debts when he was newly widowed. Very Good binding. 8vo.; in an attractive later binding of red half-goat over marbled boards with raised bands with morocco label lettered vertically; with marbled endpapers; 2 49 1 pages.~~A note on this rather interesting binding: we assume that the binder was charged with binding a group of different books to a uniform size -- the title page is trimmed and mounted and all the other leaves are folded neatly to fit the bottom edge and then the leading edge over it. Rather astonishing actually.~~This is Ritson’s first book in which he attacks Thomas Warton’s History of English Poetry in such vitriolic tones -- Warton is a pretender a cheater and a liar -- as to cause quite a contretemps in late 18th century English literary circles. One assumes this actually pleased Ritson as he went on the next year to attack Samuel Johnson and George Steevens. Eventually Ritson went complete mad barricading himself in his rooms at Gray’s Inn and setting fire to a pile of manuscripts. Very Good binding. J. Stockdale; R. Faulder unknown

Laid in is an autograph post-it note signed to Richardson affixed to the verso of the front wrapper "Brenda - / Thank you for / writing for me and / for all your support / over the years! / Love / M."<br /> <br /> One of the most distinguished art curators and historians of the twentieth century Brenda Richardson began her career at the University Art Museum in Berkeley 1964-1975 and went on to become the chief curator at the Baltimore Museum Art between 1975 and 1998. An unapologetic champion of contemporary art she curated well over 70 major exhibitions for the BMA the high spots being notable stagings for Frank Stella Brice Marden Barnett Newman and Bruce Nauman. She also curated the 1985 exhibition of the Cone Collection the BMA's prized centerpiece which contains over 3000 works including 600 pieces by Matisse as well as work by Picasso Cezanne Gauguin and others. She has authored and contributed to dozens of books on contemporary art and John Waters one of the most significant thinkers in the world of contemporary art considers Richardson to be his mentor.<br /> <br /> Fine and unread in illustrated card wrappers. Copyright date of 1920 and the book may have been printed then or perhaps slightly later. A fine fresh copy in the publisher's decorative grey cloth with onlaid illustration. Very gentle foxing to endpapers else lovely. In the rare dust jacket very good or better with foxing to the rear panel and very shallow loss at the crown else quite nicely preserved. Richardson's lively illustrations appear on nearly every page. This particular edition of Peter Rabbit is genuinely uncommon and we cannot trace another copy with the dust jacket in recent commerce. OCLC records just five physical holdings most or all of these are likely missing dust jackets as well. An appealing copy for the Potter completist. John C. Winston Co hardcover

A little cocked a little light bumping to corners otherwise a near fine unread copy with no creasing to spine. First edition second issue. Originally written in French and according to its author translated into English by a defrocked priest from New Zealand this free -- very free -- retelling of the Crusoe story ran into immediate legal trouble on its first appearance for Olympia in 1955. This second issue as scarce as the first appeared a year before the first French edition where it was published as part of the Circle du Livre Precieux series. A Descriptive Account of Hardy Coniferous Trees'<br/> <br/> Ravenscroft's work is the third in order of publication of the three great coniferous iconographies of the nineteenth century following Bedford and Lambert. The very fine plates fall into two categories: botanical studies of details of the needles and fruit of the individual trees and landscape studies of examples of individual trees in their natural habitat. This plate is an outstanding example of the latter group here drawn from a drawing by William Richardson and lithographed by F. Schenck.<br/> <br/> Cf. Nissen BBI 1588; cf.
