<p>London: John Murray Richard Bentley and Josiah Fisher 1829- 1837 4 vols 4to 275 x 200mm Contemporary red half morocco gilt with 110 engraved plates of which 72 are hand-coloured a very nice large uncut copy.</p><p>Scarce Complete Copy of the First Edition of this Rare Work on the Natural History of the Arctic.</p><p>Sir John Richardson 1787–1865 surgeon naturalist and Arctic explorer went on Sir John Franklin's first two Arctic expeditions as ship's doctor and naturalist and made observations and collected a large number of plant and animal specimens from the Canadian Arctic. </p><p>On his return to England after the second expedition he began to write this four-volume work of natural history first published between 1829 and 1837. A volume is dedicated to each of the classes of mammal bird fish and insect which are found in the Canadian Arctic. This work is an interesting example of pre-Darwinian natural history full of detailed descriptions of the appearance anatomy and behaviour of the different species. Volume 2 was first published in 1831 and focuses on the species of birds found in the Canadian Arctic. Complete sets in fine bindings are the rarest and most difficult to find in acceptable condition. <br /> <br /> Richardson was surgeon and naturalist with Franklin on his two overland expeditions to discover a Northwest Passage in 1819-22 and 1825-27 and these fine works are the chief scientific data collected. The Illustrations were drawn from specimens volume three being the artistic work of William Swainson the plates being hand-coloured. Richardson wrote most of the text and gives accounts of previous natural history investigations in the Arctic. Most of the species here recorded were then new to science. "To the publication of them the four volumes. the government made a grant of 1000 pounds. Containing Descriptions of the Objects of Natural History Collected on the Late Northern Land Expeditions Under Command of Sir John Franklin R.N. John Richardson 1787-1865 was the physician-naturalist on Franklin's two Arctic overland expeditions 1819-1822 & 1825-1826. He was instrumental in ensuring the survival of the remnants of the crew during the very difficult first expedition. His journal from this expedition was published as Arctic Ordeal published by McGill-Queen University Press in 1984. The Fauna Boreali-Americana was his major work and was published in four volumes - The Quadrupeds Birds Fish and Insects - from 1829-1837 the Fish being published in 1836 with Richardson as the sole author. It describes 133 species of fish. With 2 wood-cuts in the text and 24 full page illustrations at the rear 14 hand coloured all by Waterhouse Hawkins and numbered from 74 to 97. Eighty nine and 90 are etched on copper 94 to 97 are drawn on zinc and the remainder lithographed. This copy originally in the Royal Society library and latterly in the library of a Marine Research Institute. The plates have been stamped on the rear with a now undecipherable small circular stamp which in some cases has transferred to the following plates. Very faint on most of them more noticeable on the last several black and white plates. Bound in blue cloth with two gilt stamped black leather spine labels. Sabin 71028. AB 14492. The archive documents firefighters wearing RFD helmets working from roofs windows ladders burned interiors refuse piles and exterior hose lines showing not just isolated scenes of fire suppression but the step by step process by which a suburban fire department managed an active emergency. Scenes capture fire crews masking up beside engines directing water into smoking structures removing material from upper floors inspecting charred rooms and coordinating around damaged buildings after flame knockdown.<br /> <br /> Photo archive of 24 glossy silver gelatin photographs 5 by 7 inches Richardson Texas circa 1980s. Firefighters wear leather turnout coats helmets marked RFD portable radios self contained breathing apparatus face masks and reflective striping. Hose streams strike wood siding rooflines and debris piles; ladders reach second story windows and eaves; crews stand on damaged roofing with hose and equipment; command and line personnel confer inside burned rooms and at exterior thresholds. Several scenes show active suppression at night with smoke water spray and charred structural elements surrounding firefighters at close range. Other scenes record quieter stages of the same work including radio use air pack preparation interior inspection and removal of burned material.<br /> <br /> By the 1980s local fire departments across the United States were increasingly shaped by portable radio communication standardized protective gear air pack training and coordinated incident response even in smaller cities outside major metropolitan departments. This archive captures that transition in practical terms with Richardson firefighters working fires in houses apartment style buildings refuse areas and heavily damaged interiors rather than posed station scenes. All complete and in very good to near fine condition. A grounded record of small town firefighting physical labor technical procedure and public safety work in a rapidly modernizing suburban fire department. unknown
