Text block has moderate plus age toning to speckled edges significant age toning to front and back free end pages along edges moderate age toning to pages throughout interiorly and occasional ink marginalia in a seventeenth century hand. The bottom inch of page 131/132 has been torn away impacting the last four lines of text on both pages. An eight-line ink inscription appearing to be in an 18th century hand appear on the errata page "From the Printer to the Reader." listing errors found in the text. Text complete despite pagination. <br> <br> Shelved in Room G. EH Consignment.<br> <br> References: ESTC R21850; Sabin 98500. Henry Vane 1613-1662 emigrated from England to New England in 1635. A member of the most radical wing of the Puritans he was elected governor of Massachusetts in 1636 but returned to join the Long Parliament in 1637. Vane's stay in Massachusetts was tempestuous and he returned to England in 1637 to become a member of the Long Parliament though his interest in New England continued. After the Restoration he was imprisoned for two years convicted of treason and executed. The present text authored by a partisan in favor of Vane includes the speech Vane intended to give from the scaffold but was barred by the court. Original vertically-grained purple cloth upper cover gilt-titled. First and apparently only edition almost certainly by a woman and very rare. The central narrative is of two cousins both girls and the various misfortunes they overcome interspersed with stories which include one about a shepherd "in humble life" and one "Alfred Percy" about the ward of a gentleman nearly killed when the gentleman’s son smashes his head with a cricket bat as is shown in one of the woodcuts. OCLC records a single copy at the Free Library of Philadelphia; COPAC adds one more at the Victoria and Albert. Three Amateur Photographs of an Anti-Soviet Street Protest New York 1952
New York: 1952. Three original black-and-white photographs 4" x 6". Captioned in pencil on versos "10/15/1952". Fine condition. Three snapshots by an unknown amateur photographer depicting a 1952 street protest against Soviet occupation of the Baltic States. The protesters can be seen carrying placards in front of a large Horn & Hardart warehouse possibly in lower Manhattan. Signs read "Soviets Out of Lithuania;" "USSR is NOT Russia!;" "Stalin's Gang is not the Russian People;" "Stop Genocide in the Baltic States" etc. The protest would have coincided with the final throttling of the organized resistance movement in Lithuania following a series of mass deportations to Siberia of Lithuanians and other Baltic dissidents that began immediately following the Second World War and lasted until Stalin's death in 1953. Presumably a localized protest as we have been able to find no published record of it in contemporary newspaper reports; but an evocative glimpse into Cold War-era sentiments among Americans of Easter-European descent. unknown

Pennsylvania: Not stated 1895. Ephemera no binding. Near fine. EPHEMERA PHOTOGRAPHS. Each are 8 ½ " x 5 ¾" and mounted on 10" x 8" card stock. Three wonderful hand-colored photographs of two men and a woman from a family in the Lancaster County Pennsylvania area. older man with a large Shenandoah or "whaler" style beard is identified on the verso as "Eli Eichelberger Harriet E. Simons father. Born Feb. 2-1821 died Oct. 12-1895." <br /> <br /> The younger man is painted with startling blue eyes a neatly trimmed Shenandoah or "chin curtain" beard and is identified as "Grandpa Simon age 62 written by Fay." He has a small gold-colored pin on his vest lapel and what appears to be a gold watch chain across his chest. <br /> <br /> The woman in a front buttoned black dress with a fancy scarf or lace shawl at her neck is identified on the verso as "Grandma Simon at the age of 52 years. Translucent Erotic Playing Cards
France: Unknown publisher 1880. Very Good. A suggestive set of translucent erotic playing cards likely created in France in the mid-19th century. Set consists of 35 hand-colored playing cards 32 of which are from around 1840 featuring 11 court cards 3.25 x 2.25" and three slightly larger cards 3.5 x 2.5" possibly from the late Victorian period. Housed in a much earlier handmade late-18th century sliding box 4.5 x 2.75" made from thin plywood with pasted decorative paper wrapped in voided velvet and trimmed with gold and silver metal silk woven ribbon. They were once a part of The Stuart and Marilyn Kaplan Playing Card Collection. <p>Very Good. Cards are lightly bowed with general wear and light toning; four of diamonds is the most worn with creasing and small spot of loss to one of the corners.The box they are held in is quite fragile with tarnishing to the metal ribbon and slight soiling to velvet boards. <p>Popular in mid-1800s France and often associated with brothels these cheap seemingly innocuous risque novelties were crafted with two pasteboard layers. When held to light favorably candle light they reveal hidden sensual often pornographic images. While the cards inside were economically manufactured the little box they are held in is rather sumptuously bedecked in high quality velvet and expensive gilt metal thread ribbon. The average layman did not have access to trim or fabric as seen here indicating that this may have been owned by a rather wealthy individual. It should be added that sets as generously populated as this even when mixed are uncommon and desirable curiosa objects. [Unknown publisher] unknown

1926. Very Good. Pocket notebook 16 x 8cm; 40 leaves. Handwritten notes in ink on each recto. Staple-bound at top edge with black tape covering. Perforated leaves. Cardboard backing with no front cover possibly as issued one stub remains on top from a torn-out sheet; unsure if this was a cover page or a blank but journal begins on first existing page so no loss assumed. First page loose along perforation but still holding with all other pages firmly bound. <br /> <br /> Journal recounts a three-day trip via train and bus from New York City to Washington DC and Philadelphia Pennsylvania for the 1926 Sesqui-Centennial International Exposition 1926 World’s Fair. The author's name is never stated but based on content is likely a young man from New York City traveling with his father. Handwriting is legible throughout.<br /> <br /> Majority of journal describes visiting DC landmarks describes the interior of the Pan American Union building in detail and complains about the DC heat. In Philadelphia he recounts an incident at the hotel: "At 1 o'clock last night or this morning rather the band . came to the hotel their headquarters playing louder than any other bands ever played together and the policemen looked on and laughed. Ha! Ha! What a good joke."<br /> <br /> A detailed glimpse into one man's travel experience in the mid-1920s. unknown

Two Screen Printed Posters for Open Wide Religious Arts Festival of the Kennebunks
<p>Two posters 13" x 19" and 13" x 20" respectively screen printed in two colors on red construction paper mounted on board. Slight edgewear corners lightly bumped and with small pin holes to corners of red paper but not boards. Slight toning and rubbing to surfaces but mostly clean and bright. 2592</p><p><em>Two screen printed posters reproduced from 60s-style psychedelic hand lettering advertising art exhibit and cultural events programming as part of the Open Wide Religious Arts Festival "in the Kennebunks" i.e. in the area of Kennebunk Maine and/or its neighboring town Kennebunkport. Apparently associated with one or more churches or religious communities as several advertised events mention a chapel worship service or other religious themes and programming. The rest of the events cover a wide range of arts happenings from exhibits of painting sculpture photography and historical artifiacts to dance theater including a performance by Bread and Puppet and poetry readings including by activist-priest Daniel Berrigan. Possibly from 1967 or 1968 the two years we can find reference to the festival taking place. Beautiful anonymous vernacular examples of the meeting of groovy flower-power design and religious community à la Sister Corita Kent.</em></p>

Unpublished Manuscript: Mirthquakes Hits Darkeytown! A Minstrel Show
1940. Near Fine. An original unpublished typescript of a mid-20th Century minstrelsy together with six mimeographed copies of the typescript. The original typescript consists of 12 quarto pages typed in orange on rectos only paginated in ink by hand and a one-page List of Characters. In fine condition. The six mimeographed copies consist of 12 folio sheets 9" x 14" stapled at the topedge onto a cardboard back cover accompanied by two mimeographed copies of the list of characters on separate quarto sheets. The mimeographed copies are lightly toned three or four copies have some slight staining one copy has an owner name in ink and one is lightly annotated near fine or better overall.<br /> <br /> The list of 21 characters includes: The Interlocutor Hambones Tambo Shakespeare of Harlem Seven-Up Jackson Suntan Cootie-Locks Dimwit Muskrat Geo. Washington Jones and others. The single-spaced typescript with about 50-60 lines per page is laced with racist language and stereotypes and includes dialogue musical cues stage directions and narration of the Interlocutor; it ends with one of two poems by Shakespeare of Harlem: “Honey dis am Rufus Tappin’ on yoh window-pane … †and a skit by Seven-Up Jackson: “the only known real live gold-fish swallowing act in history … .â€<br /> <br /> Internal evidence including references to an atomic bomb attack on Tokyo suggests that the play was likely written late in or soon after the Second World War. In 1953 two popular films with similar titles were released: Walt Disney’s Thanksgiving Day Mirthquakes and Merry Mirthquakes featuring a young Liberace as Master of Ceremonies. It is also possible that the character “Shakespeare of Harlem†is an allusion to Langton Hughes whose book of poems “Shakespeare of Harlem†was first published in 1942. An unpublished and unrecorded American minstrelsy well-preserved in near fine condition. The presence of multiple copies inveighs strongly that these scripts were actively used in a group production. unknown

Unpublished History Book. The Triple Crown in England. A Brief Chronicle of the Connexion Between England and Rome from the Conversion of the Saxons to the Reign of Henry the Eighth. Compiled from Protestant and Romanish Histories
<p>n.p. 1848. About very good in contemporary half calf over brown marbled boards rubbing to edges and corners spine label missing from vol. I prior owner bookplates removed vol. I front hinge broken some pages reinforced others with cancels as apparently intended and with minor foxing to some pages as the leaves are in a variety of papers some more susceptible to foxing than others. An unpublished handwritten manuscript which appears to be a final draft of an ecclesiastical history of the English church and which clearly takes issue with many of the teachings of the contemporary Catholic church. Written throughout in a clear hand and with extensive footnote citations to writers such as Bede Gildas Columba and others.<br /><br />The work appears to be an abridged compilation of many works in a similar vein to F.G. Tomlin's History of England with a significant portion of early chapters borrowing heavily and verbatim from Tindal's translation of Rapin de Thoyras's History of England.<br /><br />A fascinating and unique work which was clearly a labor of love and displays the author's work process. The manuscript holds many more unknowns for a researcher to discover.<br /><br />Small 4to. 2 vols. 2 136pp.; 1 137-318pp. Written on rectos only but with notes and revisions on many versos and with many revisions tipped- or pasted-in.</p>

Untitled Original Manuscript Illustrated Artist's Book
n.p.: n.p. 1970. Near fine. Enigmatic and disquieting collection of six short stories and one 90-page novella neatly and distinctively handwritten and illustrated in brown ink. The material veers in tone from the parodic to the surreal to the philosophically melancholic; the style incorporates a recondite vocabulary "the pyral tarantism of being in the world" and a single consistent insistent voice alternating long unpunctuated Joycean streams of frantic consciousness with brief and airless sentence fragments. A perpetual undercurrent of violent sexuality surfaces as much in the settings and scenery as in the events: a car crash; a game of human chess; a blazing furnace; a slaughterhouse. The table of contents gives titles for each work but no author's name; the bookplate with initials "A. J." offer the only clue to the item's creator or owner. <br /> <br /> The authorial narration steps out of its queasy dreamtime now and then to comment on itself "It would appear that this is the whim of the authors" or to focus on a concrete and precisely dated image: "Week-end Traffic" catalogs automobile makes and models in obsessive parodic almost Ballardian detail - a 1931 Alfa-Romeo; a '28 Lombard a Triumph Scorpion - and characters offer each other Passing Cloud cigarettes. But for the most part settings are as hard to place as the book itself. Character names are almost but not quite real: Nish Rogoze Valetta Fedor Shad. <br /> <br /> Illustrated with line drawings in brown pen presumably also by the writer with occasional accents in black and brief captions taken from the scenes they illustrate. The execution is skilled but careful often quoting other artwork as in the illustration to the final story "Communication" whose subject is the Breughel painting Dulle Griet; we see a copy of Brueghel's scene through the latticework of a window. Other illustrations appear to be carefully composed from copies or multiple tracings giving something of the effect of a Max Ernst collage - particularly the images of a horse-headed woman and a lion-headed man perhaps an intentional quotation from Une Semaine de Bonte. A Piranesi-esque interior gives way to a crowned woman in 20th century corset and garter belt: the Queen. <br /> <br /> Although a precise date cannot be given this book bears the stamp of a London bindery which operated as Bailey Bros. until a name-change in the 1970s and references in the text place its composition after the 1930s; we estimate the date of production to be circa the late 1960s to early 1970s - though its private library feel perhaps hints at a possible earlier creation. <br /> <br /> Bizarre and unsettling yet also the product of an original voice. In short: a singular artist's book of unique vision. Original red morocco with raised bands and decorative gilt stamping to spine. Top edge gilt. Black and gold patterned endpapers. 205 pages. Bookplate taped to ffep; brown geometric design with designer initials ACW at lower right and "Ex Libris AJ". Gilt stamping to lower edge of back cover below paste-down: "BOUND BY BAILEY BROS. LTD." Xenopus rothschildi lithographed plate of an undescribed frog
London no publisher ca. 1910. Single sheet 31.9 x 25.3 cm. With eight lithographed images of Xenopus species. = This plate depicts three species of the clawed frog genus Xenopus principally of a new species X. rothschildi with four figures including three of complete animals and two others namely Müller's platanna X. muelleri Peters 1844 and the well-known African clawed frog X. laevis Daudin 1802 both represented by comparative line engravings. The plate was lithographed by J. Green the well-known London-based lithographer. The new species name suggests that the new species was obtained during one of Baron Rothschild's expeditions perhaps the one to the northeastern part of Africa in the years 1904-1905. In this region X. laevis does not occur. In any event the name Xenopus rothschildi was never published see e.g. Tinsley and Kobel 1996. Very rare perhaps unique. unknown

np 1960. Very good. An extraordinary and unique handmade artist's book elaborately assembled by an anonymous artist. A kinky but lighthearted celebration of female flagellantism the book appropriates quintessentially 1960s fashion models and recontextualizes them in dozens of original collages so that they are weilding whips switches and various similar tools. Paired with self-referential and irreverant texts as well as black-and-white hand-penned drawings presumably by the assembler of bondage spankings and other S&M-themed scenes the book humorously imagines Mod Girls as doms - a perhaps intentional visual pun. The collages many spanning across page spreads and including one fold-out exhibit a strikingly skillful and stylish retraint suggesting an ambition and audience beyond the merely pruriently personal. An outsider book of rare sophistication and wit: the Swinging Sixties meets Dada. Yeah baby. 6.5'' x 9.25''. Likely commercial scrapbook but possibly ad-hoc collages boards. Containing 66pp. plus covers and one fold-out all mounted both recto and verso with color collages consisting mainly of magazine models with occasional textual elements in German many typed. Spine appears perished. But otherwise sound and apparently complete. Very good. Housed in custom Talas archival clamshell box. hardcover
