A vue env. 16.2*23.7cm. Ce genre de scène semble avoir été fait à plusieurs reprises, probablement à destination des visiteurs, et est donc strictement d'époque. L'éruption de 1857 est en réalité l'éruption commencée le 19 décembre 1855 qui a entamé une période d'activité du volcan qui dura plusieurs années. Petits trous de punaises aux angles. This pamphlet begins by noting that some people who talk much about candour and charity meekness and benevolence when tested show a censorious bigoted proud and malevolent temper p. 3. The reason for this items production is a letter that Harwood wrote about a pre-ordination confession of faith given by Evans to the congregation at Broad-mead. In it Harwood states that everyone has the right to declare his private judgment but nevertheless uncharitably censures Evans for maintaining this right; inveighing most vehemently against him as heretical and diabolical pp. 4-5. From Palin's own catalogue of his antiquarian libraryFrom the antiquarian library of Emeritus Professor David A. Palin of the University of Manchester bookplate to frontof slipcase collected over a period of almost forty years. Condition: Disbound with a modern cloth slipcase. Textblock is firmly bound. Pages have some handling marks with wear to the textblock edge including some closed tears not encroaching on the text. Slipcase is quite smart with just some light shelfwear. Based upon architecture and style of dress ca. 1880s-90s and we believe there is fair evidence that the subject matter is Nicodemus Kansas a town in western Kansas founded by ex-slaves after the Civil War. The images here collected appear to be unknown or at least unpublished. Extensive on-line searching for analogous images of African-American pioneers in the Great Plains and Western U.S. has turned up no exact matches. However of the few municipalities for which contemporary photo documentation exists the most logical match is Nicodemus a town in Graham County in northwest Kansas founded by ex-slaves in 1877. Very little contemporary photo documentation of Nicodemus exists making these slides a potentially exciting discovery but what there is has been published in the substantial guide to the Nicodemus Historic Site by the National Park Service Promised Land on the Solomon: Black Settlement at Nicodemus Kansas. USGPO: 1986; a copy included with this collection. Those published photographs display a marked simillarity in architecture landscape and human subject to the ones collected here. The Park Service guidebook notes that while the earliest structures in Nicodemus were build of sod and stone by the mid-1880s - coinciding with the likely time-frame of these photographs - Nicodemus was in the midst of a housing boom; ".milled lumber was by then readily available.the boom encouraged quick construction of commercial and residential structures; most were light-timber framed and wood sided.by mid-June of 1886 between 25 and 30 new structures were under construction." Of particular interest is the guide's description of a general store erected by Foster Williams who had emigrated to Nicodemus from Memphis in 1886: "Williams'. grocery and general mercantile store.was a single-story frame structure about 20 by 25 feet with a plain false-front facade.the gable roof was wood-shingled." A building very closely matching this description is visible in the distant background of one photograph here. The guide-book also notes that while Nicodemus was primarily an African-American settlement a number of the town's store-keepers and businesspeople were white especially during the boom period of the mid-1880s providing at least a plausible explanation for the single apparently caucasian subject in these photos. By 1890 Nicodemus had gone bust one of many prairie towns left to die by hoped-for but never realized railroad expansion. Today the town counts only a few dozen residents most descendants of the original founders. With the exception of its stone public buildings nearly all the town's original structures have perished making it virtually impossible without some unknown further documentary evidence to conclusively verify the location of these photographs. But regardless they provide ad highly evocative glimpse of post Civil War African American life on the Great Plains a subject barely documented in contemporary photographs. Eight original silver-emulsion glass photographic slides 5 inches by 7 inches or the reverse. Edges bound with art tape presumably applied at the time of production of modern proof prints see note else well-preserved with occasional minor scratches or occlusions in image; Very Good overall. Offered together with eight modern photographic proof images made directly from the slides; image areas 5" x 7" on 8" x 10" photographic paper; Fine. Images portray African-American subjects but one posed in front of modest frame structures; one subject appears to be fair-skinned but this is inconclusive. In one photograph what appears to be a frame church or school building can be seen in the background; in another the distant outline of what is likely a commercial structure with a false facade fronting a simple rectangular building with a gable roof. The landscape is clearly arid and flat with occasional stands of deciduous trees visible in the background. The dwellings all appear to be of very recent construction; several have saplings of recently-planted trees in the foreground. unknown
