Geroge Routledge and Sons Ltd. Very Good. 258pp. A two volume set of this novel by Victor Hugo. Frontispiece plates to each volume. Gilt embossed lettering to the spine. Bound uniformly in blue boards with a decorative embossed design to the front boards. There are bumps to the head and tail of the spines of both volumes. Additional bump to one corner of Volume II and a light bump to the front edge of the rear board and tail of the front board of Volume I. A few corners are a little turned in and are lightly rubbed. A litte toning to the spines with a few tiny circular light soil/stain spots to the spine of Volume II and small rub marks with circular holes to the cloth along the rear edge of the spine strip of Volume I. Slight splitting to the the rear hinge of Volume I and front inner hinge of Volume II between the contents page and first page of the book and between pp16 - 17 although both volumes remain firm and tight. A light crease to the corner of the front end paper of Volume I and to the rear end paper and last page of the book. Volume II has a little spine lean and a soil mark acorss the front fore edges. Bright blue coloured cloth covered boards with black coloured embossed design to the panels and gilt coloured decoration and titles to the back strip. Gilt to all text edges. First published in 1866 and sat on the island of Guernsey in the English Channel. It deals with a social outcast Gilliatt who falls in love with the niece of the local shipowner. When one of the shipowners' ships is wrecked upon a dangerous reef the niece promises to marry anyone who can salvage the ship's expensive steam engine. Gilliatt volunteers and has many adventures not the least of them being fighting an octopus to retrieve the engine. Softening and rubbing of the back strip edges with rubbing of the top book corners and lower book edges. There is a significant cock of the spine. Some rubbing and stains to the book panels. Age toning of the text block edges with the occasional blemish. Pages 229 through to 244 have become slightly out of plumb with the rest of the text block due to cracking of the hinge. Victor Marie Hugo was a French poet novelist and dramatist of the Romantic movement. He is considered one of the greatest and best known French writers. In France Hugo's literary fame comes first from his poetry but also rests upon his novels and his dramatic achievements. Among many volumes of poetry Les Contemplations and La L�gende des si�cles stand particularly high in critical esteem. Covers have some superficial stains and scratches. Pastedowns' foxed. Minimal foxing to some endpapers. Man Who Laughs 1 and Bug-Jargal have small bored holes on bottom edge. Tight and clean. This is an incomplete set 8 volumes out of 16 of the Bibliophile Edition of Hugo's works. Second free endpaper states that this edition is limited to 1000 signed and numbered copies but no number or signature is present. As Hugo passed away suddenly in 1885 it is possible that these volumes had already been printed before his death the promise of a signed limited set never to be fulfilled.
