While in some respects it is a 'romantic thriller' interwoven with intrigue and adventures the novel is also an exploration of human nature and psychology and court politics. The novel is cited as an early example of realism a stark contrast to the Romantic style popular while Stendhal was writing. It is considered by many authors to be a truly seminal work; Honor de Balzac considered it the most significant novel of his timeTolstoy was heavily influenced by Stendhal's treatment of the Battle of Waterloo and his own version of the Battle of Borodino is a central part of his novel War and Peace. Number 966 of 1000 limited copies printed on Japanese paper. With coloured vignette title page to Volume I as well as numerous other engraved plates throughout the volumes. Complete in four volumes. Condition: In decorative purple half-morocco bindings with slip case. Slip case has some rubbing and two lower joints are starting. Volumes are externally smart with some fading to the spines only.
