‎Stendhal (Marie-Henri Beyle), geboren am 23. Januar 1783 in Grenoble, war Sohn eines Anwalts, der ihn nach dem frühen Tod der Mutter erzog. Stedhal schlug ein Studium an der École Polytechnique in Paris zugunsten der Literatur aus. Er bekleidete eine Stelle im Kriegsministerium und war von 1800 bis 1802 Unterleutnant im Italienfeldzug. 1810 war er Auditeur des Staatsrats, 1813 Intendant. Er war, in der Nachhut, an Napoleons Russlandfeldzugs beteiligt, 1814 übersiedelte er nach Mailand. Stendhal war mit Lord Byron und Alessandro Manzoni bekannt und mit Prosper Mérimée befreundet. Er war als Kritiker des Journal de Paris und als königlicher Bibliothekar tätig, 1830 wurde er Konsul in Triest, 1831 in Civita Vecchia. Stendhal, der auch ein umfangreiches kunst- und musikkritisches Werk schuf, gilt als bedeutendster Romancier der ersten Generation der Realisten. Er starb am 23. März 1842 in Paris. ++++++ Vie de Napoléon / (Gesammelte Werke). Für Stendhal war Napoleon teils der kleine Leutnant, der sich zum Herren der Welt emporschwingt und teils der jüngste Sohn eines Märchens, der ein Rätsel löst und dafür die Königstochter heiraten darf. Er sah ihn aber auch als Märtyrer, zu gut für diese korrupte Welt, den Opfertod wählend. Die Romatik spielte oft mit Immoralismus und Satanismus, was sich auch in Stendhals "Denkwürdigkeiten" über Napoleon widerspiegelt. Bei ihm zeigt der Feldherr Größe im Guten wie im Bösen und anscheinend ist wahre Größe nur auch über das Böse und die Bereitschaft dazu zu erreichen also auch über das Verbrechen. Seager published more than 80 short stories in publications including Esquire The New Yorker The Atlantic and Sports Illustrated. E.J. O'Brien editor of the yearly Best American Short Stories series once stated that the "apostolic succession of the American short story" ran from Sherwood Anderson to Ernest Hemingway to Seager. Poet and novelist James Dickey credited Seager's novel Amos Berry as a principal reason that he chose to pursue poetry. As an undergraduate at the University of Michigan Seager was a member of two national championship swimming teams. He subsequently earned a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University but his studies were interrupted by a bout of tuberculosis. He spent a year "curing" at the Adirondack Cottage Sanitarium in Saranac Lake New York; his experiences there and in Ann Arbor and Oxford led to the semi-autobiographical short stories published in the collection A Frieze of Girls. Subsequent to his Rhodes Scholarship Seager worked for Vanity Fair magazine as an assistant editor. He returned to Ann Arbor in 1935 where he taught creative writing at the University of Michigan until 1968."
