Eugène Sue's classic novel The Wandering Jew written in the original French in a four volume set with illustrations by Gavarni. A four volume set in half calf and silk bindings. With the important Gavarni illustrations. Delightfully illustrated with 23 plates to Volume I; 20 plates to Volume II; 22 plates and a folding map to Volume III; and 17 plates to Volume IV with numerous in-text illustrations vignettes and head and tail pieces throughout the volumes. Collated complete. Le Juif Errant or The Wandering Jew was a serially published novel which was hugely popular in Paris and elsewhere. It was written by Eugène Sue 1804-1857 who made popularised the genre of the serial novel in France. This 1845 is complete in four volumes with illustrations by Paul Gavarni 1804-1866 a French caricaturist. This was one of the most ambitious of his book illustration projects. In half calf and silk bindings. Externally fairly smart with some shelf wear to the boards and rubbing to the spine and extremities. Fading to the rear board of vol I and a little to the front board of vol IV. Pages 11 to 15 of vol IV are coming loose but otherwise pages are firmly bound. Pages are bright but spotted throughout.
