Very good in its original green cloth covered boards with slightly tarnished gilt text on the spine and with bold gilt text black designs and silver colored crescent moon and stars on the front board. A small octavo of 7 5/8 by 5 inches with decorated end sheets fore and aft. There is a gift inscription at the upper fore edge of the fly title page with a date of "May 8 1899". The cloth at the head and heel of the spine is worn of it color as is the cloth at the tips of the boards. Without a dust jacket if it ever had one. 119 pages of text and illustrated with a color frontispiece printed in orange and black and 16 full-page black and white plates printed on recto only with many vignettes throughout and floral page decorations all by Orson Lowell and American illustrator 1871-1956. What is interesting about this copy is the date of the gift inscription of :"May 8 1899". This title was not copyrighted until November 22 1899 according to David Alan Richard's in-depth bibliography: Rudyard Kipling Bibliography. Illustrated with sixteen plates in colour frontispiece with tissue guard present. Smartly bound in recent dark blue half calf over publisher's original gilt-pictorial sides top edge gilt. Some light marks and spots within exterior fine. An attractive copy. Noted in Bleiler and containing elements of the fantastic; whilst it does not deal with new inventions predictions of future wars or technological change as in Kipling's more overtly scientific romances this tale is concerned more with social consciousness and the dream-like state and is among his most psychologically interesting and controversial work. 'The Brushwood Boy' short story concerns fantasy dream-worlds. John W. Campbell described Kipling as "the first modern science fiction writer". Verne and Wells may be the fathers of Sci-Fi but it is Kipling who links them to the 'Golden Age' writers such as Robert A. Heinlein and Poul Anderson.
