Macmillan and Co. Ltd London Sussex Edition 1937-39. Limited edition of 525 sets of which 500 signed by the author were for sale. However many of these were destroyed when the publisher's warehouse was bombed in 1941. 35 vols royal 8vo full russet Niger morocco handmade paper top edges rough-gilded other edges untrimmed. several thousand pages. The Sussex edition is the definitive edition of Kipling's works splendidly produced and much sought after by collectors. Some contemporary Macmillan advertising material described it thus: "The Sussex Edition had been planned some years before the author's death and was designed to rank as the definitive edition of all his works in prose and verse in the most complete and handsome form. Kipling had undertaken a detailed revision of the text for this purpose and had autographed and numbered the first volume of each set. He left behind him careful instructions regarding the unpublished or uncollected writings which are so conspicuous and interesting a feature of the Sussex Edition. This material includes over sixty stories articles and speeches besides such groups of papers as The War in the Mountains Eyes of Asia and Brazilian Sketches none of them previously published in book form if at all in this country and the whole of his early or uncollected verse." From a contemporary review in the TLS: "The publishers are justified in the use of the epithet "superb" to describe this edition. The fine hand-made paper and Bembo type are equally satisfactory : but perhaps the binding is still more notable. It is . Niger leather lettered and simply ornamented in gold. The volumes though ten inches by six and three quarter inches in size are comparatively slim and so easy to hold; and they have an air of durability and of being meant for reading as well as for keeping which is not always the case with éditions de luxe. Set No. 15 signed by Kipling. Unobtrusive 1 cm scratch to spine of volume 7 some spine bands just a trifle rubbed otherwise a splendid Fine set. A complete set of the three pamphlets about the submarine service produced to secure American copyright and being the true first editions preceding the newspaper publication of the articles in The Times London and other English newspapers in June 1916. The articles were composed by Kipling from secret reports to the British Admiralty made available to him for propaganda purposes and comprise: I Some Work in the Baltic; II Business in the Sea of Marmora; and III Ravages and Repairs. The first pamphlet is introduced by Kipling's poem "The Trade": "They bear in place of classic names / Letters and numbers on their skin. / They play their grisly blindfold games / In little boxes made of tin / Sometimes they stalk the Zeppelin / Sometimes they learn where mines are laid / Or where the Baltic ice is thin. / That is the custom of "The Trade. Bound in full red leather with gilt embossed vignette of two elephants to the front board. The scarce original publisher's leather version of the thin paper edition. Gilt embossed lettering to the spine with vignette of wolf and snake. All edges gilt. Numerous illustrations support the text including a colour frontispiece. Red cloth page divider still attched - a little frayed at the lower edge. Significant rubbing to the head of the spine with associated chipping and loss of several mm not affecting the gilt embossed title in any way. . Neat ink name and date inscription to the front end paper dated 1932. Comes in remains of slip case with upper board missing. A scarce leather version of this classic childrens work. Kipling's Jungle Books center on the story of Mowgli an orphaned 'man-cub' who is raised in the jungle of India by wolves where he comes to learn the Laws of the Jungle. A major theme throughout the books is abandonment followed by fostering as in the life of Mowgli echoing Kipling's own childhood. Another is law vs. freedom; the stories are not about animal behavior but about human archetypes in animal form. The books remain popular to this day and have been adapted several times for film and other media including the classic Walt Disney 1967 animation and its 2016 remake. Originally published 1893-1895 this is a lovely Garden City Publishing Co. reprint c. 1950 one of a lovely collection of classic children's books all cloth-bound hardcovers with a colored paper pastedown to the front board each illustrated by a famous artist of the day unattributed here. This hardcover has bright red cloth-covered boards with that colorful front pastedown that matches the design on the accompanying DJ black lettering & illustration to spine. Condition is VG- minus: generally very clean with the occasional random spot of soil or foxing. binding straight & strong pages off-white & slightly tanned but completely supple. A few are dogeared. The DJ is present but downgraded to Fair condition due to significant edgewear all around & a large chunk missing from top inner front cover. Nicely protected in new mylar cover. Scarce First Boston Edition of this unauthorized pamphlet featuring a poem written by Kipling to garner publicity for a mildly pornographic painting by his cousin Philip Burne-Jones entitled "The Vampire" which was modeled by the actress Mrs. Patrick Campbell. Foolscap 8vo 146 x 108mm: 8pp printed in deep bluish green and scarlet with tipped-in frontispiece reproduction of Burne-Jones's painting and gothic-lettered title page with vignette by E. J. Clark of bats in flight beneath a crescent moon repeated on each page recto and verso. Original buff stiff paper wrappers hand sewn with red thread at centerfold front cover lettered and decorated in types and design of title page. Manuscript ex libris of "George D. Goodrich Boston" to front cover verso. Wanting the envelope. Short split to bottom of spine fold else about Fine. Richards E1-23. Livingston 151 & 152. Grolier 232. Written to accompany the "The Vampire" portrait of a femme fatale leaning over her male victim No. 15 in the catalogue of the New Gallery Summer Exhibition in 1897 a major show that included works by John Singer Sargent as well as Philip’s father Edward Burne-Jones. Kipling's poem descried the foolishness of a man allowing himself to be destroyed by a heartless woman Mrs. Campbell broke Philip's heart by dumping him for a leading man and then a series of other lovers. The poem became the inspiration for the 1909 Broadway play "A Fool There Was" and the 1915 film of the same title starring Theda Bara as the Vampire earning her the nickname â€the vampâ€. Issued the following year in light gray crisscross cloth. Richards speculates the "private printer" was the Cornhill Press. N. B. Boston: Unknown 1898. A single poem nine pages long issued with a glossy tan paper stock and stiff card covers. This is a Very Good Plus to Near Fine copy of the First Edition. Very scarce. There is no publisher listed but with its 1898 publication date this pre-dates the editions by Buckles Barse & Hopkins and others. Illustrated with a rather suggestive frontis in black and white and a graveyard scene that serves as backgrounf to the text on each page. Very Good Plus condition: just a bit of creasing along the fore-edge. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. First Edition. Soft Cover. Very Good Plus/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
