This edition features the monochrome title page rather than the alternative red accented title page with the red shield and the sixteen plates rather than the thirty found in the first trade edition. Beautifully illustrated by W. Heath Robinson with a colour frontispiece many monochrome vignettes and fifteen full colour tipped in plates. Collated complete. An anthology of poems by Rudyard Kipling in which he explores the question of British Imperialism towards the end of the Empire's life. Kipling uses the imagery of seafarers going to far-flung corners of the Earth in most of these poems in particular in the series 'The Song of the Cities' in which he discusses capitals such as Bombay Hong Kong and Sydney.In the publisher's original decorative cloth. <p> Cream cloth binding with navy title and decoration on the front board and spine. </p><p>British colonial propaganda. The illustrations by W. Heath Robinson are marvellous. But the poems are justifying genocide with religious slavery and colonisations with racial and justifying racism with lingual superiority. Rudyard is a white man's poet indeed. This book is like a nazi propaganda but for English people. I cringed so hard reading the poems. I wouldn't have completed reading if not for the gorgeous illustrations. This almost gave me Kipling depression</p> Hodder & Stoughton. hardcover

Bound in blue cloth with gilt decoration on the front and gilt titles and decoration on the spine piece this is sunned and darkened. Minor edge-wear bleached spot on the back remaining attractive robust and square. Hinge and text block sound but two of the coloured plates along with their captioned tissue-guards are detached but present. There are 12 coloured plates with tissue-guards as issued. Original decorated navy blue cloth cover and darkened spine. 16 masterly color plates on art paper and tipped in including frontispiece with captioned pages opposite each one. Binding with some wear contents pretty clean and complete no colouring in of the many black and white drawings no bent corners. Former owner's neat signature and blind stamp to prelims. Still firm binding text block trimmed on top and untrimmed on the leading edge and base. A large book may require extra postage according to destination. Allahabad: A.H. Wheeler & Co. 1890. 4th Edition . Very Good Minus. 5.5 x 8.5 inches 14 x 21.5 cm. Quarter red cloth with marbled boards rubbing to board edges light wear to corners. Light foxing to endpapers previous owner's name to front pastedown endpaper. Some light patches of foxing to text outside margin of two pages in Soldiers Three have slight damage from a label appears to be an original binding flaw. Original wraps priced at 1 Rupee are bound in with all issues and have varying degrees of damage - most have small sections of loss to edges and/or corners rear cover of Soldiers Three has a large section of loss rear cover of Wee Willie Winkie has a hole to the centre. All issues are the fourth Indian edition published in 1890 this includes Soldiers Three despite it stating Second Indian Edition to the title page. This edition used the same sheets as the first English Edition pagination is the same as the English edition but some of the ads are omitted. Each of these titles had a total Indian issue of 3000 copies. Roberts notes that the fourth Indian edition did not sell well and some copies are known to be stamped to the cover margin in purple ink: 'To still further popularize this Celebrated Series the price is reduced to Eight Annas per volume.' This is stamp is present to front wrappers of all issues in this collection. A rare group of Indian editions including the sought after 'Phantom Rickshaw' a collection of supernatural tales. Please check the photos and ask questions. </p><p>Condition: "VGVery Good-Covers and binding have some markings staining soiling light bubbling and some rubbing. Has some light corner blunting as well. Boards and endpapers have some bubbling yellow and foxing. Interior pages are mostly off-white and have some yellowing and foxing. Pg. 8 has a tear at the bottom near the spine but detraction is minimal to none. There are no loose or missing pages and the book is free from splits and cracks.
