Edward German's settings - by turns playful lyrical and theatrically assured -translate Kipling's rhythmic verse into songs intended for both children and adults reflecting the Edwardian taste for cultivated family entertainment.<br /> <br /> Books combining Kipling's texts with original musical settings were produced in relatively small numbers and were often heavily used making clean copies increasingly difficult to find. With many black & white illustrations by Kipling 22 of which are full-page. Grolier Children's 57; Stewart 260. Covers and spine very slightly faded leather with a few faint marks and dings a number of small defects internally none remotely serious. An attractive copy.<br/> <br/> This collection of imaginative fables is the only book in Kipling's corpus to have been illustrated by the author himself. Originally conceived as bedtime stories for the author's daughter the tales and poems included here tell how the first letter and alphabet came to be the origin of animals such as the armadillo and how several animals came to look the way they do the camel for example was sanctioned with a hump for his laziness. Pictorial red cloth blocked in white and black. The white blocking on these first state bindings was severely flaking even as the books were being produced and the publishers quickly switched to a more stable white pigment. One often sees copies described as having the pigment flaking much less than usual without mention that this therefore precludes them from being first state.Spine pigment completely gone also flaking on front and rear boards. ‎<p>First edition thus first impression with coloured illustrations London: Macmillan and Co. Limited 1913. Originally published in 1902.</p><p>Quarto. Original dark blue cloth gilt-lettered and elaborately gilt-decorated on the upper board and spine with an elephant medallion design; gilt rules to boards. Top edge gilt.</p><p>The binding is somewhat tender but all holding firm and square with only light rubbing to extremities and a couple of knocks to corners. The gilt remains notably bright and well defined. Internally the text is clean and sound with the occasional faint spot of foxing chiefly to the preliminary and terminal leaves. A little loss to top corner of first three leaves with an early gift inscription - unobtrusive and neatly penned - to the front free endpaper. The coloured plates by Joseph M. Gleeson remain fresh and vivid.</p><p>A handsome example of the first coloured illustrated edition of <em>Just So Stories</em> incorporating Gleeson's celebrated colour plates for the first time.</p> Macmillan & Co. hardcover‎

Light wear to cloth with some toning especially to spine. White titles to spine dulled but fully intact. Very good. The original collection of Kipling's popular animal stories including "How the Whale Got his Throat" "The Elephant's Child" and "The Butterfly That Stamped".
