‎London: Ward Lock and Co. 1891. The January 1891 issue of Lippincott's Monthly Magazine containing the first appearance of Kipling's early novel The Light That Failed. Octavo original wrappers. In very good condition. Rare. Written when Rudyard Kipling was 26 years old The Light That Failed is semi-autobiographical; being based upon his own unrequited love for Florence Garrard. Most of the novel is set in London but many important events throughout the story occur in Sudan and Port Said. It follows the life of Dick Heldar an artist and painter who goes blind and his unrequited love for his childhood playmate Maisie. Though it was poorly received by critics the novel has remained in print for over a century. It was also adapted into a play two silent films as well as a drama film. Association copy inscribed by Rudyard Kipling on the title page in the year of publication to his second cousin by marriage "Eliot sic Balestier from Rudyard Kipling Xmas. 93." The recipient Elliot Francis Balestier was the second cousin of Kipling's wife Caroline Balestier and her brother Wolcott with whom Kipling collaborated with for the novel The Naulahka: A Story Of East And West which he would later name his historic shingle style house in Dummerston Vermont after. In very good condition. A fine association exceptionally rare inscribed by Kipling. English journalist short-story writer poet and novelist Rudyard Kipling's major works include The Jungle Book 1894 Kim 1901 and many short stories and poems. Kipling was born in India which inspired much of his work and his innovative stories for children have become timeless classics. Kipling was one of the most popular writers in the British Empire in both prose and verse in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1907. From the series Biblioteka iunogo chitatelia The young reader's library. Translated by N. N. S. G. Zaimovskii and illustrated with drawings by N. Niko the most prolific Russian DP artist whose life and work remain almost completely undocumented. Early publication by the Posev publishing house which began its operation in 1945 at the DP camp of Mönchehof Germany. Posev was an anti-communist publishing house run by the National Alliance of Russian Solidarists NTS. The letter reads in full: “Dear Watson Many thanks for your note and the contract which certainly opens a new and safe method of burglary. I always said that the Oriental thief can give his white brothers many points in the game. The necklace he chose was amethyst & pearl - not emerald & pearl - and it is a beauty. I should very much like to be able to afford a white pearl necklace. Do you suppose the price would be very heavy I should like to have an idea on this subject. Bombay must have been a ghastly place this winter. My sister’s letters gave me some of the news as she learned it and it seems to have been fearful.
