In near fine condition. A sharp example. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. A lovely mixed set of one of the cornerstone titles in children's literature and Kipling highlight and along with Just So Stories his most beloved work. First published in magazine format in 1893-4. British Nobel laureate Rudyard Kipling was born in India lived there & in England & wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The tales are fables using animals in an anthropomorphic manner to give moral lessons. The verses of The Law of the Jungle for example lay down rules for the safety of individuals families and communities. Kipling put in them nearly everything he knew or "heard or dreamed about the Indian jungle." Other readers have interpreted the work as allegories of the politics & society of the time. The best-known of them are the three stories revolving around the adventures of an abandoned "man cub" Mowgli who is raised by wolves in the Indian Jungle with the help of Baloo the bear and Bagheera the black panther & then has to fight the tiger Shere Khan. The most famous of the other stories are probably "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" the story of a heroic mongoose and "Toomai of the Elephants" the tale of a young elephant-handler. "The White Seal" in which the main character seeks a haven for his people where they would be safe from hunters has been considered a metaphor for Zionism then in its beginning. As with much of Kipling's work each of the stories is preceded by a piece of verseand succeeded by another. MacMillan unknown

Frenzeny.</p><p>Measuring approx 13.5cm by 19cm.</p><p>Condition is good to poor dnd consistent with that book grade.</p><p>Full Condition Description: Binding holding with strong lean to upper board cracked to both endpaper joints with mull exposed general age wear and spine/corners frayed/rubbed/bumped abraded to extremities stained to upper board and with scuffing to cloth. Heavy looseness from use. Binding is cocked or leaning. Contents are holding though block shaken with cords on show to a few gutters general spotting and foxing throughout pp.81 torn to the lower margin not affecting text pp.144-pp.150 with a blue ink stain to lower margin pp.209 strained to gutter with minor surface loss to inner edge not affecting text. White sticker with manuscript numbering to pastedown. Period ink ownership to half-title. Publisher's red cloth pictorially blocked in gilt top edge gilt. Contents clean a little toning to edges and endpapers binding carefully handled small pull at crown. Charles Maurice Detmold and Edward Julius Detmold were English graphic artists twins born on 21 November 1883. Due to the illness of their father they grew up in the care of their uncle Dr E B Shuldham who had acquired a notable collection of Japanese woodprints of plants and animals. This encouraged the twins to commence drawing animals and plants at a very early age and resulted in a debut aged 13 at the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters with nature studies in the Japanese style. The Jungle Book was serialized between 1893 and 1894 and became increasingly popular upon its publication as a book prompting calls for a second instalment. The Second Jungle Book completed the Mowgli saga with five stories that "are essential to its emotional rounding-out" Grolier. 2 works octavo 180 x 199 mm. Half-tone frontispiece with tissue guard in Jungle Book both works with illustrations by William Henry Drake Paul Frenzeny and John Lockwood Kipling. Later 20th-century blue crushed morocco for the London bookseller Charles J. Sawyer spines lettered in gilt single gilt fillet framing compartments and boards small gilt roundels of elephants in profile to front boards double gilt fillet to turn-ins marbled endpapers gilt edges. Ownership inscription contemporary with binding to half-title of the second volume. Bindings bright and unblemished very mild foxing. A near-fine set.
