Covers have light wear at tips of spine and corners else a very good copy with gilt stamping bright; front and rear hinges are started due to quality of paper of endpapers text is fresh and clean. This publication also prints a poem by Rudyard Kipling The Mother Lodge on page 94-95 noting that Kipling was a Freemason. Most of the book pages 88 to 404 is devoted to 'Report of the Committee on Foreign Correspondence' including detailed information about 'English-speaking Grand Lodges' in the United States listed by each state and including 'Indian Territory' Canada by province Great Britain New Zealand Australia etc. and a section devoted to thirteen 'None English-speaking Grand Bodies' including Cuba Mexico and Puerto Rico. This publication for the year 1900 as well as previous 'Proceedings' include discussions of African-American masons see page 119 179 206 etc which includes discussion of "Negro Lodges and Grand Lodges" and the difficulties with acceptance in Washington page 119 and "Clandestine Negro Masonry" page 178 referencing Washington in the section devoted to the Indian Territory and further reference to Washington and former "Prince Hall Lodge" members in the Louisiana section page 206. Previous Grand Lodge publications also discussed rejection of 'colored' Grand Lodges by some white Grand Lodges with particular reference to the failure of 'Ohio recognition' in a specific instance in 1877 which stated: "As predicted in our last annual address the proposed recognition of our grand lodge by the grand lodge of whites of this state has failed. While I anticipated the result I must confess that the manner in which it was brought about surprised and disappointed me. followed by a long discussion of the events." 1914. New York: Sully & Kleinteich n.d. Three consecutive annual calendars each consisting of 52-53 weekly leaves each page with an aphorism from a Kipling work within a heavy paper wrapper bound at the top with rawhide. Leaves and wrappers printed in orange and green 1914 & 1915 or orange and black 1916.<br/> <br/> These undoubtedly-unauthorized American calendars came out during the first three years of The Great War across the Atlantic ironically they bear Kipling's favorite Indian symbol of good fortune the swastika. Each page week bears a quote from a Kipling work such as "And a woman is only a woman but a good cigar is a smoke." Sully and Kleinteich was a publisher of paper goods such as moving-picture books for children and calendars. "1914" reads "New York Sully and Kleinteich" on the front cover and has the S&K monogram on the rear; "1916" has just the S&K monogram; "1915" has no indication of publisher at all but clearly matches the other two. "1914" and "1915" are in remarkably near-fine condition; "1916" is lacking most of its horizontal spine and there is some edge-wear to the wrappers. All three are uncommon. Not in Livingston or Stewart. unknown

This copy has a slight lean to the spine the boards have some marks and the cloth at the top and bottom of the spine is slightly torn and a bit frayed. The interior has some occasional foxing and a couple of pages only have some coloured-pencil marks by the hand of a child. <p>Allahabad: A.H. Wheeler & Co. 1889. 1889. Fair. - Quarto 8-11/16 inches high by 5-7/16 inches wide. Softcover bound in greyish-green pictorial wrappers with the lettering in black. The front cover is detached and the spine has perished and is thus lacking. The front wrapper is heavily chipped with large pieces out and with tape repairs on the verso. The rear cover is chipped and soiled aith pieces out from the edges. Both covers are fragile and will easily chip. Collation: 5 leaves pp. 100 i leaf: advertisements with "Opinions of the Press" on verso title page with "REPRINTED IN CHIEF FROM THE 'WEEK'S NEWS.'" on verso Dedication Preface Contents 5 leaves; text pp. 1 - 97 p. 98 being blank; "L'Envoi" p. 99 p. 100 being blank; "Opinions of the Press" with advertisements on verso 1 leaf. There is offsetting to the first leaf from the bookplate and some minor slight chipping and minor creases to the corners to the first few pages with offsetting to the last page from the rear cover.</p><p>Second Indian edition. Stewart 29; Richards 39.</p><p>From the library of Edmund Gosse with his bookplate on the verso of the front wrapper. Inscribed & signed on the first page "Edmund Gosse from J.A. Symonds". "Gosse was happily married for over 50 years and had three children but did acknowledge to John Addington Symonds around the time Symonds was working on A Problem in Modern Ethics that he was attracted to men thus confirming the suspicions Symonds had voiced earlier. 'Either way I entirely deeply sympathize with you. Years ago I wanted to write to you about all this' Gosse wrote to Symonds 'and withdrew through cowardice. I have had a very fortunate life but there has been this obstinate twist in it! I have reached a quieter time--some beginnings of that Sophoclean period when the wild beast dies. He is not dead but tamer; I understand him & the trick of his claws.' Gosse had love affairs possibly not consummated with a school friend John Blaikie and the handsome young sculptor Wiiliam Hamo Thornycroft.After Symonds' death Gosse burnt all of Symonds' letters and diaries and papers that had been bequeathed to him." Publisher's original green cloth gilt lettering and elephant on upper panel gilt tiger on rear blindstamped designs gilt animal vignettes and lettering to the spine. t.e.g. xvii33033 pp. Frontispiece and 34 illustrated plates. Designated as a "Printers Copy" on front and rear pastedown there are some faded fingerprints on some pages foretips bumped very slightly cocked forged signatures of Eugene Field on the first free endpaper and Rudyard Kipling on the title page else very good. <br /> <br /> First American edition. In the 1920s and 1930s after burning through his father the poet and children's author Eugene Field's genuine estate his son Eugene "Pinny" Field II teamed up with the Chicago bookseller Harry Dayton Sickles to "enlarge" the late poet's library. In order to manufacture instant provenance for otherwise ordinary books they reproduced Eugene Field Sr's original bookplate oddly not present here wrote signed inscriptions to Field Sr. signed his name and "Chicago" and the date of either 1893 or 1895. They were very fond of forging Kipling's signature. Latest research suggests it was Sickles who was the forger Field the willing accomplice. Note on front free endpaper "Signed by Kipling" apparently someone was fooled.</p> . The Century Co. unknown

Cr. 8vo. 20 x 14 cm In Ottoman script. 6 328 1 p. b/w plts. First and Only book of Kipling in the Ottoman-Turkish world. First Edition. Cesur kaptanlar. = Captains courageous. Translated by Kamuran Serif Saru. Captains Courageous is an 1897 novel by Rudyard Kipling that follows the adventures of fifteen-year-old Harvey Cheyne Jr. the spoiled son of a railroad tycoon after he is saved from drowning by a Portuguese fisherman in the North Atlantic. The novel originally appeared as a serialization in McClure's beginning with the November 1896 edition. The following year it was published in its entirety as a novel first in the United States by Doubleday and a month later in the United Kingdom by Macmillan. It is Kipling's only novel set entirely in America. In 1900 Teddy Roosevelt extolled the book in his essay "What We Can Expect of the American Boy" praising Kipling for describing "in the liveliest way just what a boy should be and do.". The book's title comes from the ballad Mary Ambree which starts "When captains courageous whom death could not daunt". Kipling had previously used the same title for an article on businessmen as the new adventurers published in The Times of 23 November 1892. Caton Woodville 1899 in the centre showing a 'Tommy' his head bandaged but defiantly drawing the bolt of his rifle framed by 2 verses each on the pages on either side together 48 lines publisher's note on side 5 printed on cream paper by Eyre & Spottiswoode as Queen's Printers showing the Royal Arms the lettering in green the two illustrations in reddish-brown "Copyright in England and the United States by the Daily Mail Publishing Co." 6 sides 12½" x 8" several light creases very lightly dusty on side 1 small split in part of one vertical fold but otherwise a pleasing copy Written for and sold and sung to music by Sullivan in theatres and elsewhere in support of the families left behind by the reservists who went out to South Africa from all classes of society beginning "When you've shouted 'Rule Britannia' - when you've sung 'God Save the Queen'. will you kindly drop a shilling in my little tambourine. he's an absent-minded beggar and his weaknesses are great. and he's left a lot of little things behind him!" probing their situations "There are girls he married secret asking no permission to. There is gas and coals and skittles and the houserent falling due." and with references to Paul Kruger. It also exhorted employers to keep the soldiers' jobs open for them when they came back.
