Overall a good presentable copy in the original publisher's cloth. The Jungle Book is a collection of short stories and verses the most famous of which relate to the feral child protagonist Mowgli a "man cub." While they can be read independently of each other each chapter serves as a fable using animal figures to provide a moral lesson. In each volume the short stories are both preceded and followed by poems or songs including the notable "Mowgli's Song" and "The Law of the Jungle." The Jungle Books based on the author's childhood and later work experience in British India are indicative of Western Orientalist ideology at the turn of the 20th century which is somewhat softened by Kipling's fondness for his former home. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. Kipling was born in India which inspired much of his work and his innovative stories for children have become timeless classics. Light soiling and a thumb smudge to first upper wrapper lower fore-corner crease to second upper wrapper but very good. The first three of six copyright printings of edited versions of Kipling's series of DAILY TELEGRAPH columns from December each printed within a day or so of the columns' individual appearances. Fifty copies of each were printed. These constitute the first booklet printings of the pieces collected later in complete book form by Macmillan London in February of 1915. From the Nelson Doubleday collection sale with a pencil note on the first wrapper: "Published Dec. 7 1914."
