Édition originale et tirage unique de ce conte oriental de Joseph Charles Mardrus magnifiquement illustrée et ornementée par François-Louis Schmied qui assura lui-même la mise en page et l'impression de ce chef d'œuvre du livre Art déco : le trait des planches a été gravé sur bois, la peinture en a été exécutée à la main, d'après les originaux, dans les ateliers de laquage de Jean Dunand. Cette illustration se compose d'une couverture illustrée, un frontispice, 7 illustrations à pleine page, une grande planche dépliante formant un triptyque, 29 bandeaux horizontaux dont 22 grands, la plupart en-tête, 32 lettrines ornées ou petites vignettes dans le texte, 6 petits bandeaux verticaux et de nombreux bandeaux et lettres mis en couleurs et dorés. TIRAGE UNIQUE À 25 EXEMPLAIRES SUR JAPON, SIGNÉS PAR SCHMIED. Celui-ci (n° XXV) comporte l’une des rares suites des bois tirés en noir sur Japon. L'ouvrage est entièrement monté sur onglet.

Other illustrative motives take in dragons flowers and floral daipers butterflies and coasts. I "fanciulli selvaggi" incarnano la speranza di un impossibile ritorno alla natura, a una selvatichezza libera e incontrollata, e interpretano un mito che continua a parlare alle nostre coscienze. Il tema che questo saggio si propone di affrontare si concentra sul rapporto tra l'idea di feral child espressa da Kipling nel celeberrimo personaggio di Mowgli e quella che emerge nelle opere del narratore e poeta australiano David Malouf. Mowgli cela in sé un'idea di conciliazione, ma anche di violento contrasto tra la maturità inglese e l'infanzia indiana del suo autore, sintetizzate in una identità imperiale. Per contro la visione offerta da Malouf è quella di un puer in grado di destabilizzare, di mettere in discussione identità e ruoli imperiali acquisiti come inderogabili. Da un lato, quindi, si analizza un mito coloniale e, dall'altro, una sua sfuggente ed elusiva interpretazione postcoloniale. Matteo Baraldi collabora con il Centro Studi Omeoglotti dell'Università di Bologna occupandosi principalmente di letteratura e cultura australiana. Autori: Matteo Baraldi.

Using India inks and Winsor Newton colored inks the artist Barry McCallion has created a non-verbal text for one of the main themes of the novel: the Lama's quest to free himself from the Wheel of Things by finding the legendary "River of the Arrow." Set against the backdrop of "The Great Game" conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia with espionage and intrigue as important an element as the backdrop of India itself KIM is a classic novel. Barry McCallion has altered text pages selected for their references to the spiritual quest that the Lama and Kim undertake highlighting the text in green and outlining appropriate passages in red outline the Red Bull on the green field. The full page images on each verso are all a circle within a square starting with a single silver-gilt dot. The paintings become more and more complicated and colorful as the "quest" for the River of the Arrow progresses. Tout commence en 1919 pour beaucoup la révolution apportée par les Editions MORNAY fut l'utilisation systématique de l'illustration pour les ouvrages édités par cette maison.Il faut savoir que jusqu'alors l'illustration était réservée aux editions dites "de Luxe" qualificatif qui indiquait à la fois un soin tout particulier apporté à l'édition à la composition mais aussi un prix élevé qui ne permettait pas à tous d'acquerir ces ouvrages et les réservés ainsi aux classes les plus aisées de la société.En ce début de XXeme siécle un certain nombre de maison d'édition se lancérent sur le créneau de ce que l'on appela le livre de "demi-luxe" eut égard aux prix plus modéré pratiqué pour ces ouvrages. Ouvrages qui pour autant permettaient de découvrir des auteurs de tout premier ordre et étaient imprimé avec une attention toute particuliére sur des velins de qualité. Pour autant les illustrations n'étaient qu'exception dans ce genre d'edition.Antoinette et Georges MORNAY ont pensés une organisation qui allait bien au-delà de ce "coté visible de l'iceberg" que fut le recours permanent aux illustrateurs. Leur concept de maison d'edition etait global et trés "marketing" dirions nous aujourd'hui :- Prix de vente trés bas augmentant néanmoins au fil des années avec le succés mais qui n'acceptait aucun compris tant sur la qualité de l'impression papier gravure etc. que sur le choix des auteurs et des illustrateurs .- Création d'un Service de Presse qui par les livres offert aux journalistes donna aux Editions MORNAY une publicité non négligeable.- Campagne de publicité pouvant être de grande envergure Article de Maurice CONSTANTIN-MEYER sur Maria Chapdelaine dans l'Illustration de NOEL 1931De tout cela il nous reste aujourd'hui un formidable ensemble de textes et d'auteurs comprenant 112 ouvrages edités de 1919 à 1935 qui retrace l'évolutions de ces editions du livre illustré moderne : des bois gravé en noir jusqu'aux aquarelles au pochoir. First Library edition one of 275 copies; 4to; printed on Japanese vellum toned publisher's colour lithographed device to title 12 full-page colour lithographed illustrations by Nicholson with captions some offsetting otherwise very good; publisher's pictorial paper-covered boards rubbed at extremities browned minor soiling small chip to fore-edge of upper board otherwise very good-plus.<br /> A wonderful example of this book in an edition thought to run to two hundred & seventy-five copies. From the library of James Younger a member of the Younger brewing family.<br /><br />Nicholson had been working with Heinemann since the mid-1890s. As well as designing their windmill device Nicholson created a number of books for Heinemann including London Types 1898 and The Square Book of Animals 1899. Kipling's short verses here complement the illustrations perfectly though he opted out of collaborating on Nicholson's Square Book of Animals complaining in a letter to the publishers 'All Nicholson's animals are practically extinct in Great Britain their places being supplied by New Zealand Lamb; Argentine Beef. The only way I tried it my verses became so deeply political not to say protectionist that I stopped.'<br /> London, William Heinemann, 1898. hardcover

A very good plus copy in paper covered boards with cloth spine but with some splitting to the front and rear internal hinges some other minor wear and with a vintage bookstore stocker to the rear pastedown. Plates in fine condition with some slight offsetting to the facing pages. No dust jacket. A very nice copy of this classic. William Heinemann unknown
