‎Sheet music: Lichtenberg or The Wattle Blossom New South Wales Contingent: A Service Song‎

‎London: Charles Sheard & Co 1904. Softcover. Very Good. First edition. Folio. Two nested bifolia making eight pages. Composer's name stamp and "file copy" stamp on the front cover outer bifolium separating a bit at both ends of the fold light edgewear and toning a very good and complete copy. For voice and piano. Plate imprint "Lichenberg. E." The following note is printed above the music "The blossoms of the Australian Wattle Tree a species of Acacia emit a remarkably fragrant perfume more particularly after rain: the sudden recognition of this scent on an occasion during the Transvaal campaign awakens thoughts of 'Home sweet home' in the breast of an Australian Trooper." Gerard F. Cobb is primarily remembered for his musical settings to Kipling's words this perhaps being his last such composition as he passed away in March of the year it was published. This song is unrecorded by OCLC and appears equally scarce in the trade; in fact the only references we can find to the piece online are are The Kipling Society citing a record of it in Rudyard Kipling A Bibliographical Catalogue by James McGregor Stewart and a 2005 recording released by ABC Records-Australia on an album titled When the Empire Calls. A rare and intriguing piece. Charles Sheard & Co unknown‎

‎Sheet music: The Absent Minded Beggar No. 2 in D‎

‎New York: Boosey & Co 1899. Softcover. Fair. Later printing possibly the first American edition. Folio. Two nested bifolia with a single sheet insert making ten pages. Outer bifolium separated along the fold but both leaves are present inner bifolium nearly separated edgewear owner name on the front cover and toning and soiling to the exterior a complete but fair only copy. Plate imprint "E. 7 - 7." This song was originally published in London in 1899 by The Daily Mail to raise money for soldiers and their families during the Second Boer War. The original front cover printed the statement "For every copy sold of this song one shilling goes to The Daily Mail fund for the relief of the sufferers by the war." This charitable effort was reportedly the first of its kind. Kipling wrote the lyrics specifically to be used in this fashion and is quoted as saying "It's catchpenny verse and I want it to catch just as many pennies as it can" going on to remark that it is not something he would ever care to reprint "so there is no need of copyrighting it in America. If anyone wants to sing it take care that the proceeds go to our men" Victoria and Albert Museum. The song was an enormous hit and though the exact amount raised is unknown it certainly succeeded in catching a lot of pennies; what is not certain is whether or not Boosey & Co. took care to contribute part of their proceeds from this American publication as nothing is printed indicating that they did. An interesting reprint that appears to be a bit more uncommon than the original. Boosey & Co unknown‎

‎KIPLING, Rudyard - DETMOLD, Maurice & Edward J (illus).‎

‎Sixteen Illustrations of Subjects from Kipling's "Jungle Book".‎

‎London: Macmillan & Co. Limited 1903. Magnificent illustrations for Kipling's classic and considered by some to be the finest book illustrations ever published First edition sole impression. A report on the publication in the New York Times for 5 December 1903 stated that "the edition is strictly limited to 500 copies for England and America". This portfolio is a magnificent presentation of the Detmold brothers' celebrated book illustrations. Reviewing the London exhibition of the original artwork the Manchester Guardian commented that the Detmolds "are able to prevent their work from ever sinking to the level of mere illustration". The reviewer enthused that "the drawing of the Monkey People in the Cold Lairs who 'were not thinking of Mowgli's friends at all' is full of character subtle observation and invention. The figure of Bagheera in 'Mowgli and the Red Flower' has something of that beauty which hath terror in it. Baloo and Nag Kaa and Akela the lone wolf are brought before our eyes in a singularly convincing and engaging form". Folio. 16 coloured chromolithograph prints on thin card sheet sizes: 330 x 430 mm. tipped onto white board with grey window mounts mount sizes: 393 x 545 mm. with cover sheet to each illustration providing the title and a short extract from the book. Original green cloth chemise front cover lettered and with illustration in gilt containing title page contents leaf and 16 loose prints. Housed in a custom grey cloth folding box. Chemise worn with loss front cover detached bookplate removed lacking ties occasional chips and tears to extremities of cover sheets light browning to sheets fold to title page and contents leaf strengthened prints bright and unfaded; a good set. An opponent of female suffrage and a staunch supporter of British imperialism Kipling nonetheless had great sympathy for the traditions of India as well as the literary ability and desire to present it as a land of beauty and enchantment. He was born in Bombay where his father ran a school of art and he lived in India until the age of six. He was sent to school in England but chose to return to the East at 18. His father had become director of the Lahore Museum in what is now Pakistan and Rudyard became a journalist for the "Lahore Civil and Military Gazette." His first two collections of stories "Plain Tales from the Hills" and "Soldiers Three" depict the lives of the British military in India; he proved to be a prolific author writing novels tales for children and adults and many poems. Kipling's wife was American and they lived for a time in Vermont but from 1896 the couple settled in England. Among his many honors are a Nobel Prize 1907 and the Gold Medal of the Royal Society of Literature 1926 which had previously only been awarded to Scott Meredith and Hardy. Macmillan and Co unknown‎
