‎The Jungle Books Volumes I and II‎

‎New York: Doubleday & Company 1948. Hardcover with Dust Jacket with Slipcase. Near Fine/Very Good. Illustrations by Watson Aldren.

Bindings are tight and square. Text clean light even toning. Minimal shelf handling wear. Dust Jackets with price are in a new clear protective Mylar sleeve with a touch of corner and spine tip wear evenly toned. Previous owner's name on front free end page. Slipcase had moderate shelf handling. Watson Aldren Color Illustrations. The Jungle Book first published in 1894 is a collection of stories by the English author Rudyard Kipling.

Most of the characters are animals such as Shere Khan the tiger and Baloo the bear though a principal character is the boy or "man-cub" Mowgli who is raised in the jungle by wolves.

The stories are set in a forest in India. A major theme is abandonment followed by fostering as in the life of Mowgli echoing Kipling's own childhood. Another important theme is of law and freedom; the stories are not about animal behavior but about human archetypes in animal form.

They teach respect for authority obedience and knowing one's place in society with 'the law of the jungle' but the stories also illustrate the freedom to move between different worlds such as when Mowgli moves between the jungle and the village.

Critics have also noted the essential wildness and lawless energies in the stories reflecting the irresponsible side of human nature. wiki Doubleday & Company hardcover‎

‎THE JUNGLE BOOKS - PENGUIN UK‎

‎PENGUIN CLASSICS. new. The story of Mowgli the man-cub who is brought up by wolves in the jungles of Central India is one of the greatest literary myths ever created. As he embarks on a series of thrilling escapades Mowgli encounters such unforgettable creatures as the bear Baloo the graceful black panther Bagheera and Shere Khan the tiger with the blazing eyes. Other animal stories in The Jungle Books range from the dramatic battle between good and evil in 'Rikki-tikki-tavi' to the macabre comedy 'The Undertakers'. With The Jungle Books Rudyard Kipling drew on ancient beast fables Buddhist philosophy and memories of his Anglo-Indian childhood to create a rich symbolic portrait of man and nature and an eternal classic of childhood. ‎London: Macmillan and Co. 1894. Thou art of the Jungle and not of the Jungle First edition in book form. Kipling's best-known work was based on folk tales learned during his childhood in India. Kipling Rudyard THE JUNGLE BOOK AND THE SECOND JUNGLE BOOK. London: Macmillan 1894 1895. 8vo. 212 238p. Classic First Editions First Issue. Wonderfully illustrated in black and white throughout by Kipling's father J. Lockwood Kipling with W. H. Drake & P. Frenzeny. The Jungle Book bound in full blue calf four raised bands gilt titles to spine blue endpapers the front cover bound in. A lovely near fine or better copy all edges gilt WITH The Second Jungle Book bound in gilt ruled and titled half red calf & linen five raised bands covers bound in at the rear. A fine excellent example. "This most desirable pair will always fill an honorable place in any library of children's books" Quayle 87. Richards A76 & A85; Stewart 123 & 132. Livingston 104 116. A lovely mixed set of one of the cornerstone titles in children's literature and Kipling highlight and along with Just So Stories his most beloved work. First published in magazine format in 1893-4. British Nobel laureate Rudyard Kipling was born in India lived there & in England & wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The tales are fables using animals in an anthropomorphic manner to give moral lessons. The verses of The Law of the Jungle for example lay down rules for the safety of individuals families and communities. Kipling put in them nearly everything he knew or "heard or dreamed about the Indian jungle." Other readers have interpreted the work as allegories of the politics & society of the time. The best-known of them are the three stories revolving around the adventures of an abandoned "man cub" Mowgli who is raised by wolves in the Indian Jungle with the help of Baloo the bear and Bagheera the black panther & then has to fight the tiger Shere Khan. The most famous of the other stories are probably "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" the story of a heroic mongoose and "Toomai of the Elephants" the tale of a young elephant-handler. "The White Seal" in which the main character seeks a haven for his people where they would be safe from hunters has been considered a metaphor for Zionism then in its beginning. As with much of Kipling's work each of the stories is preceded by a piece of verseand succeeded by another. MacMillan unknown‎

‎London: Macmillan and Co 1895. First editions. Very Good Near Fine. A handsome set. Publisher's blue cloth bindings stamped in gilt. All edges gilt. Dark green endpapers. Slight wear to the spine ends and corners of The Jungle Book a little foxing internally otherwise very clean and fresh throughout. A Very Good copy. The Second Jungle Book presenting very well indeed front hinge a little tender bookeller's ticket to foot of front free endpaper verso. A Near Fine copy overall. Both volumes illustrated throughout with contributions by J. L. Kipling W. H. Drake and P. Frenzeny in The Jungle Book; the author's father Lockwood Kipling C.I.E. illustrated The Second Jungle Book. This set contained in a custom blue cloth slipcase.

Few books have shaped the imagination of childhood quite like Kipling's Jungle Books. First published in 1894 and 1895 these two volumes introduced the world to Mowgli Baloo Bagheera Kaa and Shere Khan. The timeless stories blended fable folklore and imperial adventure into one of the most enduring classics of English literature. The Jungle Book 1894 includes the first appearance of "Mowgli's Brothers" "Kaa's Hunting" and "Tiger! Tiger!" alongside such favorites as "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi." The Second Jungle Book 1895 continued the talesdeepening the Mowgli cycle and adding enduring pieces like "The King's Ankus" and "Red Dog." Together the two books form the complete Mowgli canon. First edition sets in original cloth are increasingly scarce especially when both volumes present well.

These are the foundational works of Kipling's career - the stories that earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature 1907 and secured his place in the canon of English storytelling. Based on folktales and legends that Kipling learned during his childhood in India the Jungle Books were met with huge success upon publication and continue to enthrall readers of all ages to this day. According to Professor Edwin L. Miller their publication "caused even severe critics of Kipling's previous work to admit that he is a writer of inspired genius." Largely focused on man's relationship to nature the Jungle Books in part narrate the tales of Mowgli a human "man-cub" raised by wolves as he tries to find his proper place in the world. As he struggles with his own identity he finds allies and adversaries among the animal communities through which he travels. They also include the story of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi the heroic mongoose who would later inspire an animated short voiced by Orson Welles. For contributions like these Kipling became the first English-language writer and the youngest ever to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Very Good Near Fine. Macmillan and Co unknown‎

Publisher's red cloth pictorially blocked in gilt top edge gilt. Contents clean a little toning to edges and endpapers binding carefully handled small pull at crown. Charles Maurice Detmold and Edward Julius Detmold were English graphic artists twins born on 21 November 1883. Due to the illness of their father they grew up in the care of their uncle Dr E B Shuldham who had acquired a notable collection of Japanese woodprints of plants and animals. This encouraged the twins to commence drawing animals and plants at a very early age and resulted in a debut aged 13 at the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters with nature studies in the Japanese style. The Detmolds subsequently learned techniques of watercolour etching and of colour printing with copper plates. London: Macmillan and Co., 1908 unknown‎
