<p>This short story was originally published in 1957. This edition takes the stand-alone story and brings it to life with the art of Richard Erdoes. It is inscribed and signed by Erdoes on the half title page along with a quick sketch.</p><p>The book is in very good condition. There is a small speck on the front cover and wear to the corner cloth on the rear bottom cover.</p><p>The dust jacket is in very good condition - it has browning notably on the spine and lightly along along edges. The spine ends are particularly shelf worn with three triangles ~1/8" that have rubbed away. The front flap has been shallowly clipped at the top - the jacket price is still there. discoloration on front flap former bookstore price sticker.</p><p>All said it is a sound and attractive if well-loved copy.</p> Dodd, Mead hardcover

A 26 page pamphlet in original numbered envelope. </p> <p>This poem dates from 1904 shortly before Joyce was to leave Ireland and originally took the form of a broadside printed by James Joyce and circulated throughout his Dublin circle. Designed to defend and clarify his artistic position it took a well-aimed swipe at the narrow minded people of Dublin their refusal to face reality and their predilection for art in the “Celtic Twilight†vein. Joyce putting himself squarely in the tradition of Aristotle and St. Aquinas reckons his writing as a purgative for all Dublin’s hypocrisy: ‘That they may dream their dreamy dreams / I carry off their filthiest streams… Thus I relieve their timid arses / Perform my office of Katharsis.’ His unflinchingly honest art is a mirror which reflects the things they would rather not acknowledge. And furthermore the poem declares that he’s perfectly willing to pay the price of his holy office that he must bear the brunt of their anger and their hypocritical scorn for that is the task for all artists true to their principles even if it leaves them ‘self- doomed unafraid unfellowed friendless and alone. The Holy Office is a delightfully wicked satire and when one remembers that Joyce had the vast majority of his career ahead of him it seems a deliciously arrogant spurt of venom a swift strike from the Lucifer match of a morning star. The first trade edition of these two short tales from James Joyce works that would eventually appear in Joyce's 1939 novel 'Finnegans Wake'. The first trade edition of this work first impression. This was also the first UK edition of this work following a limited run of numbered privately printed copies produced in Paris in 1929. In the publisher's original price unclipped dust wrapper.Containing two short stories from the Irish modernist 'The Ondt and the Gracehoper' and 'The Mookse and the Gripes' unfinished works that would eventually become incorporated into 'Finnegans Wake' a work that was gradually written over the course of seventeen years and is here referred to only as a 'work in progress'.Initial reaction to Finnegans Wake following its final publication as a complete work in 1939 was largely negative ranging from bafflement at its radical reworking of the English language to open hostility towards its lack of respect for the conventions of the genre.With a former owner's inscription dated 1942 to the front free endpaper.
