‎Transition: An International Quarterly for Creative Experiment. Number 13. Summer 1928.‎

‎Paris: Transition 1928. The summer 1928 issue of Transition number 13 containing James Joyce's ongoing piece “Continuation of a Work in Progress." Octavo original pictorial wrappers with the cover portrait by Picasso illustrated with black and white photographs throughout including Berenice Abbott's famed portrait of James Joyce. “Continuation of a Work in Progress" is an excerpt of Joyce's experimental novel that would later be published as Finnegans Wake 1939. Joyce began working on Finnegans Wake shortly after the 1922 publication of Ulysses. By 1924 installments of Joyce's new avant-garde work began to appear in serialized form in Parisian literary journals transatlantic review and transition under the title "fragments from Work in Progress". The actual title of the work remained a secret until the book was published in its entirety on 4 May 1939. The work has assumed a preeminent place in English literature. In very good condition with loss to the spine. Cover by Pablo Picasso. Transition was a Paris-based modernist literary journal founded in 1927 by Eugene Jolas that became one of the most influential platforms for experimental writing in the interwar period. Dedicated to challenging traditional literary forms the magazine published work by leading figures such as James Joyce Gertrude Stein Samuel Beckett and Hart Crane often showcasing texts that pushed the boundaries of language and narrative. Its pages were especially important for serializing excerpts of Joyce’s Work in Progress later Finnegans Wake thereby introducing avant-garde readers to his evolving style. Transition unknown‎

‎JOYCE, James, & F J C Skeffington‎

‎Two Essays.‎

‎Dublin: privately printed by Gerrard Bros. 15 October 1901. His first obtainable publication First edition of the author's first obtainable separate publication a plea for the freedom of the theatre published when he was 19. This copy is from the library of the 3rd Viscount Esher Oliver Brett 1881-1963 with his bookplate on the chemise. Joyce was a student at University College Dublin in 1901 when he penned The Day of the Rabblement. The essay and one advocating female equality within the university by Joyce's schoolmate F. J. C. Skeffington A Forgotten Aspect of the University Question were both rejected by the University College newspaper. In the case of Joyce's essay this was because he mentioned D'Annunzio's Il Fuoce which was on the Index librorum prohibitorum while Skeffington's essay was rejected owing to its radical content. Instead the two paid to have the essays published as a pamphlet in a small run which they hand-delivered. The exact number of copies printed is not recorded but was surely small. The figure cited in the 1933 Catalogue of Rare Books by the Ulysses Bookshop is as low as 85 while Skeffington's son estimated a run of around 100 to 200 copies Slocum & Cahoon. Only a small number of these were preserved since Joyce did not reach any degree of literary fame for many years. In the essay Joyce attacks the Irish theatre for catering to popular tastes and promotes free expression. "Joyce was stirred by a group of fellow university students - the 'rabble' of the title - signing a letter of protest on political and religious grounds against the Irish Literary Theatre's first performance of The Countess Cathleen by W B Yeats. Joyce critiques the Irish Literary Theatre for its response to the protest which Joyce claims saw them bow to public pressure and 'prejudice' and become 'shy of presenting Ibsen Tolstoy or Hauptmann'. In Joyce's opinion the work of these three European writers was profound innovative and worthy of attention. Significantly the essay shows Joyce upholding the principle of artistic freedom and condemning censorship in all its forms - an outlook that he would maintain throughout his career" British Library 'The Day of the Rabblement'. Joyce's only previously published works were Et Tu Healy! a pamphlet printed by his father when he was aged nine of which no known copies survive and an article on Ibsen included in the Fortnightly Review April 1900. Octavo 8 pp. Original pink wrappers printed in black. Housed in a custom yellow cloth chemise. Front wrapper slightly toned at edges rear wrapper browned else clean. A very good copy. ‎JOYCE, James‎

‎Typed letter signed to Jacob Schwartz.‎

‎Paris: 1930. Lady Cunard. is sending over a person to hear Sullivan An unpublished letter sent to the future proprietor of the Ulysses Bookshop enlisting him in the promotion of the Irish tenor John O'Sullivan. Joyce first heard the singer perform in October 1929 and was immediately enthralled by his powerful voice. Upon meeting Joyce and O'Sullivan became friends and drinking companions and Joyce worked tirelessly to help O'Sullivan achieve success. In early 1930 Joyce was struggling against a creative slump in his work on Finnegans Wake. Furthering O'Sullivan's career became an alternative pursuit; Joyce was himself an amateur tenor and regarded the singer as "a kind of alter ego" Ellman p. xlv. He attended as many performances as possible always sitting in the front row and responding enthusiastically and encouraged his friends and admirers to do the same. He also attempted to get the tenor noticed by music critics and potential patrons such as Nancy Cunard's mother who he mentions in the present letter: "I have written to Lady Cunard and she is sending over a person to hear Sullivan". Ultimately few others were found who shared Joyce's enthusiasm for the singer but he was immortalized as the character "Jean Souslevin" i.e. "under the wine" in Finnegans Wake. Jacob Schwartz was "one of the first to recognize the market potential for letters and manuscripts of Joyce" Brockman p. 174. He met the writer in London in 1929 and shortly afterwards embarked on a journey to Dublin to purchase Joyce-related documents and memorabilia. The Ulysses Bookshop opened later in 1930. Single sheet of Joyce's printed letterhead 232 x 158 mm typed on one side. Housed in custom orange cloth chemise with acetate internal pocket. Short splits at ends of former folds two with small tape repairs to verso holding fast edges a little chipped and creased lightly toned. In very good condition. Richard Ellman ed. Letters of James Joyce Volume II 1966; William S. Brockman "Jacob Schwartz - 'The Fly in the Honey'" Joyce Studies Annual vol. 9 Summer 1998. hardcover‎
