Much of the work on this was done with the assistance of younger admirers including Samuel Beckett. Joyce's method of stream of consciousness literary allusions and free dream associations was pushed to the limit in Finnegans Wake which abandoned all conventions of plot and character construction and is written in a peculiar and obscure English based mainly on complex multi-level puns. Much of the wordplay in the book stems from the use of multilingual puns which draw on a wide range of languages. The role played by Samuel Beckett and other assistants included collating words from these languages on cards for Joyce to use and as Joyce's eyesight worsened of writing the text from the author's dictation. The book ends with the beginning of a sentence and begins with the end of the same sentence turning the book into one great cycle. Indeed Joyce said that the ideal reader of the Wake would suffer from "ideal insomnia" and on completing the book would turn to page one and start again and so on in an endless cycle of reading. . London Faber and Faber Limited 1939. Orig. red cloth in very fine condition. Orig. red and yellow dust-jacket with a few tears to extremities. Small piece ab. 1 cm lacking at top of front wrapper and about the same at top of back wrapper. Minor loss of paper to top capital far from affecting lettering. A nice not price-clipped copy. First blank leaf and last two leaves browned due to a loosely laid in leaf of a newspaper otherwise internally near mint. Uncut. � First edition. This masterpiece by one of the greatest modern writers is probably the most celebrated as well as least read of Joyce's works. He spent 16 years writing it and rarely if not never has a work of English literature been so debated and written about before its appearance as this one.
